Logitech unveils marathon-like wireless keyboard and mouse with 3-year battery life.

  • February 10, 2010 8:46 am

Tired of having to constantly replace batteries in all of your wireless devices? I know I am. Throwing away cash and time on batteries is no one’s chosen task in life. Wireless computer accessory makers routinely tout their devices and products life-span on a single set of batteries. In regards to wireless mice and keyboards, a solid 10-18 months isn’t out of the norm. I generally don’t have any complaints either. A solid year seems good enough, right?

Not to Logitech. Announced today, the Wireless Desktop MK710 by Logitech is the world’s first 3-year life span wireless keyboard and mouse combo. The new ultra low battery consumption is made possible by a more refined RF adapter which is exponentially more frugal with it’s transmissions than past versions. One of the battery saving techniques used by the MK710′s RF chip is that it dynamically shuts down the wireless signal when not needed — much more often than it’s predecessors. Resume time waiting for everything to reconnect after the signal is severed is said to be almost non-existent.

Sounds pretty interesting wouldn’t you say? I wouldn’t mind picking up a MK710 myself. Price wise, it’s a mid to lower high-end product, priced solidly at $100. There’s cheaper options out there if you so choose, but it’s also far from the most expensive keyboard and mouse combo I’ve seen. Think an MK710 is in your future? Get yours in Europe starting this month and the US come April.

Some gamers lover 1st/3rd person shooters. Others are drawn towards RPG’s. And some are pulled towards the wild world of racing. While nothing can recreate the 120 degree temperatures and overpowering aroma of racing gas and burning rubber like an actual trip around the track, as technology improves, games mimicking that very activity are becoming better and more life like. In an attempt to bring the track home, Logitech has released an update to the popular and highly realistic G25 steering wheel, the G27.

The updated G27 now features a dual-motor force feedback mechanism with a helical differential for a more true feel that should have you looking over your shoulder checking your blind spots all while sitting motionless at your computer desk/gaming chair of choice. Gamers of either PC or PS3 units will be able to pretend as if the wind is in their hair and gasoline pumping through their veins as they try to navigate the concrete jungle that makes up many a racing tracks today.

Other features of the G27 include an RPM/shift indicator light, 900 degree (2.5 lock-to-lock) rotation, 16 programmable buttons, D-pad, 3-pedal base (gas, brake, and clutch), and a 6-speed gear shifter. If racing games are your thing, you really haven’t played a game until you’ve used a steering wheel like the G27. Start your imaginary journey today for only $299 via Logitech’s Site.

Logitech router/butter knife sheds a boat load of weight

Those of you who look at your router day in and day out and cant stand to see all of the heft and excessive amounts of plastic may have something to look for in the Logitech Japan’s LAN-W300N/R. The main draw here is of course the size — the insanely thin (for a router) case. Thickness for said router starts out at a still rather svelte 24mm and moves down to a Lindsy Lohan skinny 7mm. Butter is safe no more. As far as actual real specs such as speed, which by the way tops out at 300Mbps, price, and availability are sadly still unknown. At least you have a pretty face to stare at right?

If any of you have a home full of AV equipment you’ll know that pain it is to have to constantly switch between a million different remotes.  You’ll also hate it when you can find one of those million remotes.  Universal remotes are nothing new as they have been around for many years.  In recent years however, they have become increasingly complex, almost like miniature computers.  Logitechs Harmony 1100 touchscreen remote is the sequel to last years 1000.  The 1100 features a black anodized aluminum casing and a 3.5″ touchscreen, this year with user customizable controls!  Another new for this year is RF-based support on top of the Infrared support.  The Harmony 1100 will sync through either Mac or PC and auto-configured to control up to 15 devices out of more than 175,000!  If this is your answer to a less stressful home entertainment system, check back with Logitech come Feburary and get ready to hand over $500.

While Logitech isn’t exactly raking in the money, they still are keeping up with new product releases.  As previously mentioned they are cutting 15% of their workforce in order to try and get back into the black ink.  Wanting to put money issues behind them and focus on the bright future, Logitech is jumping on the CES craze.  Logitech made public the next installments of several different categories including a new keyboard, mouse, and headset.  Click through for the full details.

It what is now a daily occurrence, another company is announcing workforce cuts.  Logitech, while supposedly set to do well this week at CES, is not immune from the current economic hardships.  According to CEO Gerald P. Quindlin: “During the December quarter, the retail environment deteriorated significantly, and moreover, we expect the economic environment to worsen in the coming months and we are therefore taking significant actions to align our cost structure with what is likely to be an extended downturn.”  How long will it take for the cost cutting measures to turn into black ink on the companies financial reports?  Try 2010.  This is going to be a great year.

Logitech MX Revolution Review

  • January 5, 2009 8:59 pm

img_5718In my quest for the perfect wireless mouse I have spent many hours at Best Buy, Circuit City, Radio Shack, etc.  You  name the electronics store and I’ve been there.  At first, I wanted to get a bluetooth mouse as to free up a USB port on my Mac Book Pro because we all know the MBP is just loaded with them /sarcasm.  Back on topic.  After testing out many models, and reading many reviews I decided against a bluetooth mouse for a few couple reasons.  One, they aren’t as smooth. I would be moving the mouse across the screen only to have it jump randomly for a second or two.  It would go on these random outbursts every 10 to 15 minutes.  Als0, for some reason the bluetooth mice kept disconnecting, if only for a split second, still it was a pain.  After eliminating bluetooth mice, my selection to choose from became substantially longer.  I have had my eye on the MX Revolution for over a year now but have held off largely due to the $100+ asking price.  It wasn’t until a few days after Christmas where I discovered it on sale in Best Buy at $50, plus a $30 gift card made the mouse only $20 in hard cash.  A sweet deal indeed.
