Rumor: Apple To Release “Absolutely Different” Product(s) This Year.

  • August 22, 2011 9:30 am

According to loosely translated (Google) report from Japanese tech site macotakara.jp, Apple will announce/release new Mac hardware this year that is “absolutely different from current products”. No specifics are given, meaning the new hardware in question could be anything from radically redesigned Mac Pro desktop computers to larger 15″ and 17″ MacBook Air-like laptops to even an all new device.

According to 9to5 Mac, macotakara is only marginally accurate in their predictions, citing the most recent “victory” of correctly estimating the iPad 2′s release date. In short: Your guess is as good as anyone’s.

More Rare Apple Gear Turns Up On eBay. 20th Anniversary Mac Add-on Subwoofer Latest To Hit The Web.

  • August 14, 2011 11:50 pm

Manage to score a 20th anniversary Mac and looking for the subwoofer that went along with it? You’re in luck. Two of them have popped up on Ebay. The seller is making them available “as is” considering he can’t actually power them up without a 20th anniversary Mac no thanks to the goofy, proprietary power connector.

For the Apple/Bose/gadget collector out there, the current ~$230 asking price is a rather small one if you ask us.

Anyone know any more about these speakers? Shoot us an email!

Want A Mac But Pinching Pennies? Best Buy, Apple Now Selling Discounted Refurbished Units.

  • July 24, 2011 10:33 pm

We’re not going to lie. We’re still going through the honeymoon with our new 11.6″ and 13.3″ MacBook Airs. And even though we look forward to new Apple hardware releases to see what the company intends to keep us customers for another year, more frugal shoppers looking to save a few dollars can walk away with quite a deal. But for those who are looking to spend a little less for that Apple fix — the previous generation 11.6″ MacBook Air powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor can be had for as low as $834.99 via Best Buy and $749 from Apple’s own online store. Moving up to the 13.3″ Core 2 Duo-powered MacBook Air raises the cost a bit to $999. Still, that’s considerably cheaper than what these units went for just a few short days ago.

While we can certainly understand the draw an OS X powered machine for a shockingly low $749 may possess, we see the new Core i5 and i7 processors, backlit keyboards, and Thunderbolt port as reasons that far outweigh the $100-$250 savings. Sometimes it’s just worth spending that little extra bit…

HDMI.org Blocking The Sale Of HDMI To DisplayPort Cables.

  • July 9, 2011 10:44 pm

If you’re the type to use their DisplayPort toting Mac for multimedia purposes, you might want to pick up a couple of these — (male/male) HDMI –> DisplayPort cables. According to HDMI.org — the company that controls the HDMI spec — these HDMI/DP cables don’t have HDMI connectors on both ends and therefore aren’t “true” HDMI cables. As such, they’re out of spec and explicitly barred from sale. On the surface, it’s just a blatant cash grab by HDMI.org trying to force people to pay for grossly overpriced HDMI cables. Frankly it’s quite ridiculous.

Certain online retailers are already showing the cables as out of stock — if they’re even listed at all. In the meantime, those looking to go from HDMI –> DisplayPort will need to purchase a (female) HDMI to DisplayPort (male) adapter to plug into a normal HDMI cable. (Example adapter.)

Gadgetsteria’s advice: Get this adapter and a cheap HDMI cable from monoprice. Problem solved.

OS X Lion, New Macbook Airs Dropping Next Wednesday, July 6th At 9:00AM PST?

  • June 30, 2011 9:04 am

Well hot damn. If you were anxiously and impatiently awaiting the upcoming release of OS X 10.7 Lion and/or some new Macbook Air hardware, your wait time just got a lot shorter. Previously, the rumored release date was more towards the middle to second half of July -2-3 weeks away. But a new claim made on t-gaap (Three Guys and a Podcast) says a source told them that OS X Lion will officially be released next Wednesday, July 6th at 9:00AM (PST). Their reasoning for believing the source:

One particular item of interest about this news is that with OS X Lion being an online-release-only, Apple can wait until the 11th hour to release new OS. They don’t have to first lock it down, then press it onto DVDs, then box it, then ship to their hundreds of stores and through distribution in order to meet a certain publicly announced launch date. With an online release, Apple just needs to upload the final release to their servers and then make it available.

Announcing financial results while also releasing two extremely high profile products isn’t very Apple-like. Getting everything out of the way before said financial results sounds a bit more realistic, not to mention exciting for those people who sold their only Mac to fund a new Macbook Air and have had to live solely on an old Windows laptop for the last week. (Guilty as charged.) Taking this route also allows Apple to say “Hey, financial results are already great but we just released two massive products. Next quarter will be even better.”

We surely hope the t-gaap source is correct because we can’t stand this stupid laptop much longer. Not to mention, it will be a sort of “after party” for the 4th of July holiday weekend. Fingers are crossed…

Sparrow Gains Twitter And Path Creators As Advisors. Secures Solid Future?

  • June 23, 2011 1:07 pm

Think the popular 3rd party OS X mail app, Sparrow, is going anywhere after Apple revealed a highly improved version of Mail.app at WWDC? Think again. Today on the company’s official Twitter account, Sparrow announced that Loren Brichter (Tweetie/Twitter for Mac) and Dave Morin (Path) are now Sparrow advisors. While the immediate outcome won’t be noticeable by mainstream users, it signals a continued interest in Sparrow despite Apple’s recent Mail.app improvements. Both Morin and Brichter have experience in dealing with OS X app development which should in turn secure a continuing updates and new features within in Sparrow.

Sparrow’s most recent update brought among other things, multiple inbox support and the ability to sync with Facebook and allow FB friends’ photos to display alongside emails.

Sparrow is currently on sale in the Mac App Store for $9.99.

Best Buy Matching Apple’s $100 “Back To School” Gift Card Promotion.

  • June 20, 2011 1:34 pm

Apple’s 2011 “Back To School” program which this year is giving away $100 iOS/OS X App Store gift cards might not be as interesting as past years where they gave away from iPods, but Best Buy is thankfully coming through to save the day. In an unadvertised (shocker) program, Best Buy will match Apple’s $100 offering with their own $100 gift card. The big difference of course is that Best Buy’s gift card will count towards anything in store — software, hardware, TVs, etc.

To qualify for the promotion you’ll need to purchase a MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, or Mac Pro and be one of the following:

  • a college student or student accepted to college
  • a parent buying a computer for a college student
  • faculty/staff at any grade level of your respective college

Don’t forget: This promotion isn’t being widely advertised. You’ll need to specifically ask the Best Buy sales rep about the offer.
