We knew it was coming, rejoice it is here: Android 2.2 (Froyo) released for G1 [Alpha]

  • May 28, 2010 6:58 am

Now before you get all frothy at the mouth, turning over every little pebble for the download link, we must stress that this is an alpha — expect bugs.

Thrown together by infamous Android dev, Cyanogenmod and the many talented folks over at XDA, G1/Magic owners can finally relish in the Froyo limelight.

One thing you should know is the list of non-working functions: WiFi/GPS, camera, some wallpapers, external audio and flash. It seems kind of lacking now, but the list of working items should prove adequate: calls, 3G, LEDs, call audio, gapps and the notification bar. Don’t be too bummed though. These guys are fast — really fast. As of writing it appears to up to the 15th build of this particular ROM so there’s no need to worry about stagnation.

If you’re up to it, jump on over to this forum thread and get caught up to speed.

Rogers: “Update your Magic to our firmware or else we’ll cut your data. Oh yeah, say good-bye to your precious root.”

  • January 27, 2010 4:01 am

After a relative quiet couple of months, it appears the red bastard up north (read: Rogers Wireless) is back at screwing customers over again. This time, it’s Android users — specifically, rooted Android users — whom are getting the shaft.

It’s no secret that there has been a 911 issue plaguing Rogers’ HTC Magic devices. For those that root their phones, a fix has already been found and installed. But, that’s not good enough for Rogers. They want require you to upgrade your device to their new firmware or else they cut off your data access until you do. Somehow, “protecting” users by patching a 911/emergency bug by cutting off access to your phone is both stupid and extreme. Then again, it is Rogers Wireless we’re talking about here — a sort of Canadian AT&T if you will. Ya, they’re like that.

Anyway, users who have been updating have noticed that their root is being stripped away and subsequent attempts to re-use the update.zip method for re-rooting their devices is failing. Of course, being the crafty fellows that they are, the dev community *may* have a fix. Simply editing a simple .prop file and changing the firmware version is enough to pass Roger’s network scan and keep you on your older, rooted firmware.

Now if only they had actually done something about this when it first cropped up many, many weeks ago…

Fuck you Rogers!

Google Navigation goes back in time, Android 1.6 gains official support. [Update]

  • November 23, 2009 3:11 pm

g1-googlenav

If you were eyeing your non-Android 2.0 device because of it’s lack of exciting features — namely Google Navigation — Google would like to extend a welcome Happy Thanksgiving to you. The cause for celebration…? Google has gone ahead and ported Google Navigation backwards to Android 1.6 (Donut) devices. Oh happy day. That pretty much wraps up everyone in the Pre-Droid/Android 2.0 game. Heck, even the goldfish memory sized G1 is getting in on the action. How about them apples? And who says the G1 is dead…

**Update: TechCrunch points out that the Google Nav for everyone misses one key feature — the “Navigate to” voice command. Deal breaker? Hardly.

HTC Magic ROM upgrade brings Sense UI onboard.

  • October 23, 2009 7:40 am

HTC Magic owners lusting after the eye candy and graphical supremacy that is the Sense UI can now make use of an updated Magic ROM via HTC’s support site. Besides including the Sense UI, this updated ROM, version ” 3.03.715.4″, comes complete with Android 1.5 Cupcake. Not quite as exciting as 1.6 (Donut), though better than nothing at least.

Talk of HTC Magic’s getting the Sense UI have been discussed before as has the lack of T-Mobile/Google branded MyTouch 3G’s from receiving this same update due to licensing issues. Anyone care to risk their unit to see if they can manage to squeeze it in?

  • Upgrade instructions here **You will need to have valid serial numbers in order to download the update from the support site. Maybe that’s how they’ll lock out MyTouch 3G/Google branded device users…

“Cupcake” bringing YouTube favorites to your homescreen

  • February 18, 2009 2:16 pm

Fans of the still elusive cupcake update for Android have another reason to lust.  Mobile Crunch discovered while playing around with an HTC Magic at MWC that a new folder popped up in the “live folders” screen: YouTube Favorites.  It is the first live update folder that doesn’t pertain to contacts alone.  In true live update fashion, your favorite YouTube videos will be pulled down and ready for your ocular enjoyment in as little as 2 clicks.  As cupcake keeps baking in the oven, the developers are taking it upon themselves to add a little feature here and there that will overall make cupcake an even more impressive update.  Hopefully it gets done cooking soon as their are many anxious Android users waiting.

HTC Magic (G2) announced by HTC and Vodafone

  • February 17, 2009 11:03 am

vodafone-htc-magic

Today at MWC Vodafone and HTC jointly announced the next iteration in the “G” series line of phones. The new phone brings several refinements though nothing truly revolutionary. With such features as: *obviously Android*, a 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7201a processor, 512MB ROM / 192MB RAM, 3.2″ (guestimate) HVGA touchscreen display, 3.2 megapixel camear w/ AF…and still no flash, quad-band EDGE and dual-band 7.2Mbps HSDPA (900/2100 MHz), WiFi 802.11b/g, GPS, Bluetooth, and a 1340 mAh battery. While the 1340 is bigger than the G1′s paltry 1150, 1340 is hardly enough for a smartphone with the web as it’s bread and butter feature. Coupled with the proc speed, G2 users will have to perform a little “magic” of their own. *I know terrible attempt at humor…shame on me*.  The rated talk time of the HTC Magic is 400 minutes for 3G and 450 minutes for GSM with standby coming in at 660 hours/420 hours respectively.  Why is there a longer standby time in 3G than lower the quality and more battery friendly GSM?  Someone please enlighten me and help rid me of my incompitence.

Android Magic (formerly known as G2) leaked!

Android camps around the globe start jumping and dancing in the streets as leaked images of the HTC Magic (formerly G2) compliments of Boy Genius are quickly spreading like wild fire around the web.  The Magic is the next generation of GPhones from Google and boy does it look a whole lot better than the G1.  Everything about it just screams sexy where as the G1 was more like 40 year old overweight man.  The Magic is more rounded and sculpted making it a dream to hold in your hand.  With features (so far known) such as HSDPA/WiFi/GPS, 3.2 megapixel camera (still no flash), and of course the much coveted yet highly elusive Cupcake package will be strutting their digital goods on the Magics hardware and software.  For now that’s all we have to go on, but hopefully soon more is known.  Until then stay tuned!  A couple of pics await you inside.
