Eye-Fi X2 Upgrade Brings Smartphones and Tablets Into the Mix.

  • January 5, 2011 8:52 am

Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen a lot of attention paid to WiFi-enabled memory cards from the likes of Eye-Fi. At this year’s CES, the company is taking the wraps off of their newest Eye-Fi X2 card upgrade which brings new functionality to new and old cards alike. With the new X2 upgrade, Eye-Fi users can now extend wireless sharing and uploading to a nearby smartphone or portable device. Combined with other Eye-Fi features such as wireless backup and media sharing and you’ve got yourself another reason to buy more memory cards. Hey, you can never have too much, right?

Lexar Unveils 64 GB and 128 GB Class 10 SDXC Memory Cards.

  • January 3, 2011 10:52 am

At last year’s 2010 CES, we saw some exciting potential in SDXC hardware, with promises of 2TB of storage and up to 300MB/s transfer speeds. And now as we pack our bags for CES2011, we’re finally starting to see some tangible progress, albeit small. Lexar Media is taking the wraps off of their latest additions to the SDXC line of hardware with two new cards — a 64 GB and 128 GB option. These class 10 SDXC cards are guaranteed to give users at least 20MB/s, though we’d hope the theoretical maximum is more the norm.

Pricing on these new cards is pretty intense: $399 (64 GB) and $699 (128 GB). Our opinion: Unless you really need the speed, hold off until the summer months. The prices for SD cards and the like drop like rocks dipped in lead after a few months. You could easily save $100-$200 off of one of these new cards if you wait until summer. Just sayin’

Washing machine 3-port USB hub card reader clock combo. Kitchen sink oddly MIA.

Love to travel light and efficient? Have a knack for novelty flash drives/gadgets? Look no further than the Washing Machine 3-Port USB Hub Card Reader Clock Combo. Whew! It’s quite a mouthful to say yet the entire package is roughly the size of a rubiks cube. Obviously this USB appendage won’t wash your laundry. Why someone would want a miniature washing machine sitting next to their computer is beyond me. Hey, I won’t judge you. We all have our crutches. Moving on, this buffet of words does manage to fulfill the rest of it’s promises with 3 USB ports for whatever other crazy house hold appliances turned flash drive you may have, a card reader that supports XD, M2, T-Flash, SD/MMC, MS card, and finally — the most important of all — a clock. Green isn’t your thing? Sorry guys and gals, that’s your only choice.

As weird and awkward as this meshing of various forms of life is, I still kinda want one. Yes, I’m weird…

Throughout the last few years, just about every gadget/consumer electronics manufacturer has felt that they could produce the most cost effective and useful storage format. We as consumers know this to be false, yet still the madness continues on. This madness begets card format after card format until we arrive to where we’re at today — actually needing a 33-in-1 card reader. You may ask yourself, “Are there really 33 different storage formats?” Why yes, yes there are. This memory card ready by Silicon Power ensures that you’re pretty much guaranteed to have a slot to jam whatever card you have into it’s boxy, plastic casing. If you a gadget guru with various memory cards of umpteen different formats laying around your house, perhaps a purchase of this very device is worth considering, hmmm?

Supported card formats:

  • M2, microSD, microSDHC, CF Type I, CF Type II, CF PRO, CF PRO II, MicroDrive, Magicstor, M.S. PRO-HG Duo, M.S. Duo, MagicGate M.S. Duo, M.S. PRO Duo, MagicGate M.S. PRO Duo, SD, SDHC, miniSD, miniSDHC, MMC, MMC 4.0, MMCplus, MMCmobile, RSMMC, -xD , xD Type M, xD Type H, M.S., MagicGate M.S., M.S. Select, M.S. PRO and MagicGate M.S. PRO

SD Cards get bump to 64GB thanks to Toshiba

When 32GB of pictures just isn’t enough, Toshiba is there to save you. The SDXC cards will feature speeds of 35Mbps and 60 Mbps for write/read respectively. The first samples of said card are due to hit manufacturers’ secret labs this November with the general public getting graced sometime in spring of 2010. While I would much rather have several smaller cards (I cringe at the thought of losing 64 GB worth of data, especially pictures), some people just gotta have it all. Who are you?

Digital or Film….? How about both!

If you are a professional photographer chances are at one point you had to go through the switch from film to digital.  For many it was like starting over from the beginning as you had to relearn many aspects of photography as digital is vastly different from the old film cameras.  But what if you could have the best of both worlds.  Sure some photographers still carry multiple cameras consisting of digital and film variants, but what if you could blend the two formats into one body and device?  That is where the Phase One 645 steps up to win your heart.

Kingston brings the heat: microSD cards now max out at 16GB!

MicroSD cards are perhaps the greatest example of how in just a few years time digital storage has drastically revolutionized the way our digital devices store data.  Kingston announced today at MWC that their line of microSD cards will now top out at a full 16GB!  Just a few months behind SanDisk.  Trivial facts aside, just think, that’s around 2,200 songs at 256kbps!  And to think it all fits on a card the size of your standard remote control button.  Simply amazing.  Yet we go on with our lives every day as if it is nothing special.  Just think back to when massive floppy disks held a few kilobytes of data and scientists and gadget lovers such as ourselves got all nerdy over that!  15-20 years from now, we’ll look back on our 16GB microSD cards and laugh as we enjoy our 3D holographic 500 petabyte cards that are the size of a lead pencil tip.  Back on task…the 16GB microSD cards will come in at a cool $90 according to Kingston.
