Watermelon + 10,000 volts = Good day!

  • August 2, 2010 7:08 am

Who doesn’t like geeky, Mythbusters-esque science bright and early on a Monday morning? I can’t think of anyone…can you? On that note, what would you say to injecting a lonely watermelon with over 10,000 volts of vaporizing electricity? “Bring it on!” I say.

…and bring it on they did. This watermelon has been served. Click on past for the video showcasing not one, not two, but five watermelons getting instantly vaporized. It’s all good not-so-clean fun in the name of science….

Mythbuster-esque “Immersion Immersion” to put gaming myths/concepts to the real world test. [TV]

  • April 7, 2010 9:42 am

Love the idea of the Mythbusters but looking for something geared a little more towards concepts that appear in video games? If you think about it, there’s actually quite a market there. The people behind “Immersion Immersion” — Rooster Teeth (RedvsBlue) — think so to which is why they are putting together one of the most awesome of all awesome shows (second to Mythbusters of course).

Immersion Immersion is currently in the pilot phase, but if it gets the green light to proceed, nerds everywhere will soon be able to see concepts from their favorite video games played out in real life.

So far, only one concept has been tested — driving a car in third person. With a camera mounted on an arm that extends off the back of the car and the windows covered up, that video game third person view is put to the test. How hard could it be? Well, watch the video below to find out.

I can sit here and say that I think I’d do better than the driver below, but it’s all speculation and boasting until I could actually attempt it myself. Think you would fare better?

Erik Gates, Mythbusters “Rocket Expert” dies from fall.

  • December 30, 2009 9:34 pm

In a bit of sad news tonight, Erik Gates, the proclaimed “Rocket Expert” of Mythbusters whom made several appearances on the show over the years passed away on December 20 after what doctors called blunt force trama to the chest. Apparently, Mr. Gates was working on some roofing when he fell 30ft. through a skylight.

Regardless of your level of geekery and if you watched/loved/hated Mythbusters, any life cut short is sad and unfortunate. We can only offer our deepest condolences to Erik’s family in this tough time.

Discovery Channel gets its own iPhone app

discovery-app

For the closet scientists out in iPhone land, the App Store can now be called your official home. If you spend hours each week glued to the Discovery Channel taking in all that it has to offer, you will be ecstatic to know that you can now take all of that geeky love on the go via your iPhone. The app will bring you copious amounts of video clips, quizzes, photo galleries, program schedules, as well as updates from Discovery news. Naturally, you’re bound to find something interesting at some point. No worries, said content can be easily shared via an email link generated from within the app. Sweet! Most of the video clips are just that — clips, though the app includes iTunes links to download the full episodes via the iTMS. Still, clip or full episode, this free Discovery Channel app is by far a geek’s best friend. Can you tell I’m excited!?

After spending a mere 30 minutes with it, I can tell you that even over AT&T’s craptactic 3G network, the app is extremely fast with hardly any lag in sight. Flipping through the various shows’ list of videos results in thumbnails that are either already there or appear within a second or two. Definitely a well coded app! It is worth noting that the initial loading time when first firing up the app is roughly 20 seconds long. Hey, if it helps overall navigation through the app itself and keeps slowdowns and freezes from cropping up. Overall, I’m extremely excited about this app. Don’t take my word for it. Give it a try!

Mythbusters coolest “explosion” EVER…”Rocket Car”

Rocket Car + 650 sled = instant dust

If you are a tech/gadget junky, chances are you have at least heard of a show called Mythbusters.  It is a myth debunking/confirming show on the Discovery Channel that has over the last couple of years been an extremely entertaining show while also delivering knowledge…two things that don’t play well together very often.  An episode of Mythbuster that raises the show to a new level of awesomeness shows a sled outfitted with various rockets completely decimating a tiny car.  FYI: the sled was traveling at more than 650 mph!  What is really interesting to see in the video is that after the inital rockets fire to get the sled moving, once the second stage rockets kick in, the sled practically dissappears in a blinding flash.  If you love all things that go boom this is definitely worth a watch.  Step inside to see the insane carnage in action and the *very few* remains.
