T-Mobile’s employee(s) in charge of uploading promotional marketing material to the company’s YouTube account are fast. But they’re not that fast. Several videos of unannounced upcoming MyTouch LG Android phones were spied just before being marked “private”. The official specs we’ve seen floating around signal these are mid-range devices with the biggest difference between the addition or lack of slide-out QWERTY keyboard. More as we get it…
XPAL Power is riding the smartphone wave today in announcing the PowerSkin line of battery infused cases. The 1500mAh cases (iPhone 4 features 2000mAh battery) cover some of the most popular smartphones on the market — HTC Evo | HTC HD7 | HTC myTouch 4G | Motorola Droid X | Samsung Galaxy S 4G, Vibrant, i9000 and i9003 | iPhone 4 (AT&T and Verizon). The design looks sleek and unobtrusive and is aided by the soft touch silicone that wraps around the cases. Features include the ability to charge the case (and phone) while the phone is inserted as well as syncing to your computer. A set of indicator LEDs along the back side of the case (bottom of iPhone 4 case) gives users a visual representation of remaining battery life.
Availability is still listed s “coming soon” with price equally as mysterious. Such things should be cleared up in the coming days, however, so check back soon.
In the meantime, check out PowerSkin’s website for more info and images.
While we could talk of the MyTouch 4G’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 3.8″ display, 5 megapixel camera, or HSPA+ capabilities, we’ll focus instead on it’s flashier, prettier face. Specifically, the MyTouch 4G will come in four…um…flavors — white, black, red, and plum. The usual white/grey/black of consumer electronics is becoming less of a standard, as manufacturers and carriers are increasingly requesting and providing more colors, albeit at times being a bit gaudy.
Hopefully we won’t have to wait too much longer. The release is still shrouded in mystery. If you’re looking for something more concrete, November/December sounds ’bout right.
There’s something to say about a talented bunch of folks who tear apart a device before it’s barely a week old. Exhibit A: The MyTouch 3G Slide and its new found freedom. Compliments can go to eugene373 for his aptly timed hackery. I s’pose you’d like to know exactly how to root that freshly acquired MyTouch Slide of yours, huh? Hop inside to get the low down…
Too many times I’ve seen a gadget pass from relevance into obscurity almost overnight. With it’s untimely passing, users are left with outdated bricks to which nothing can bring back “the good ‘ol days”. For MyTouch 3G users, I’m sure the end has been haunting them for several months now. With phones such as the Droid, Incredible, and EVO 4G, who would want a MyTouch?
Thankfully T-Mo still thinks a considerable amount of people care about their MyTouch as new promotional material has been spotted, proclaiming that a Froyo update for the MyTouch is in the works. Unfortunately, no timeline or release date is mentioned. But that isn’t so much as important as the simple acknowledgement that it’s coming.
So MyTouch 3G users, can you sleep a bit more soundly now?

The Motorola DROID may be stealing a majority of the rooted Android articles with things such as 2.1 goodies ported over or 1GHz overclocking, but it’s hardly the only kid at the playground. The G1 and MyTouch 3G may be older, slower, and generally less desirable when compared to the likes of the DROID and Nexus One, but those aging devices still have some kick left in them.
Thanks to Eugene373 over at xda-forums, the MT3G (read: MyTouch 3G/HTC Magic) and G1 have been overclocked just like their bigger, hairier chested brother, to the tune of 780MHz. When pushed further, those old bucket of bolts even managed pinging the 1GHz bell.
The DROID at 1GHz is ominous enough, running at almost 2x the rated clock speed. But that ARM A8 in the DROID is a newer, more power efficient chip. The processor in both the MyTouch 3G and G1 is an older, less power efficient ARM A11. Pushing that to 1GHz is just begging for trouble, and at the very least, melted skin.
Still, the geek in me yearns to try it out. If only I had some older Android hardware to try it on… Thats where you come in. If you don’t mind voiding your warranty and risking the life of your precious Android beauty, overclock that thing and report back to us with the results.

It appears as if T-Mobile is continuing on their path to create this mega “MyTouch” brand. The phone you see above is the MyTouch Slide, the claimed successor to the MyTouch 3G. For those of you keeping track, this particular gem has been called the “Espresso” from time to time within the inner Android circles.
The biggest difference here is of course the physical qwerty that slides out form underneath the display. Speaking of which, it’s disappointing to note that the display is only HVGA (480 x 320) and the processor equally average — 528MHz ARM11 processor. Getting this revamped MyTouch into your hands won’t happen until around May for a still TBD price however.
With the increasing push behind the MyTouch brand, many sources are calling it the “Sidekick replacement” sighting that T-Mobile is in fact trying to move away from the Sidekick name and brand and moving towards a more (dare I say) sophisticated platform. Having a real physical qwerty doesn’t hurt either. I know there are still plenty of people who like ham fisting those tiny smartphone keys though, myself included.
Does a more physical MyTouch seem like a worthy addition?

The G1 was Google and Android’s first foray into the consumer smartphone market. For what it set out to do, I’d consider the G1 a pretty decent phone, though as we see now with the current crop of Android phones, there was plenty to build upon. After the G1 came the MyTouch 3G/Magic with it’s much sleeker and sexier lines. One problem persisted however, as the latest devices came out with Android 2.0, questions regarding RAM/ROM size started to arise due to Android 2.0+’s larger foot print and the rather meager partition allotment for the OS itself. It looks as if crisis has been adverted folks. Everyone is going to be just fine.
T-Mobile has come forth and announced that the MyTouch 3G Fender Edition will get Android 2.1 via an OTA update this spring. It isn’t as soon as we’d like to hear (and I hope to God my DROID gets it before “the spring”) but we can’t be too picky. A couple month wait is much better than “never” or shelling out a couple hundred dollars more for a new phone all together. Any G1/MyTouch users breathing a bit easier?
