More friday movie fun: 5,000 fps slo-mo video of marksmanship, smashes, and other cool stuff.

  • August 20, 2010 1:51 pm

It’s friday. News is kind of slow. We’re looking (like really, really looking) for stuff to throw your way. But dammit. I keep getting distracted by videos such as “Tempus II”. The video, created by Philip Heron, a student at Ravensbourne College of art in the UK, highlights 7 minutes of super slo-mo 5,000fps video, capturing everything from shooting cards, a karate dude taking out some cinder blocks, to light bulbs smashing against the ground. There’s a lot to take in with those little eyeballs of yours.

One thing I found pretty interesting was the sheer amount of storage needed to pull of this video. Shooting at 1/5th the speed (1,000fps if you skipped ahead) takes up 8GB of storage for every 6 seconds. So shooting at 5,000fps for nearly 7 minutes equals up to nearly 3TB of images! That’s insane!

Anywho, thrill me (and entertain yourself) by taking a few minutes to watch Tempus II. If you’re a real nerd like you claim to be, then you’ll certainly enjoy what you see…

Futurama world re-created with LEGOs

  • July 2, 2010 2:47 pm

Futurama may or may not be a “geek” thing. LEGOs however, are! And when there’s LEGOs in vast numbers, you know something nerdy is in play. Speaking of nerdy, Matt De Lanoy is a massive nerd, creating this 5′ x 7′ LEGO-fied version of Futurama. Initially, Matt started with just a few structures and characters. Obviously he got sucked in. The rest as they say, is history.

There’s nothing you can’t build with LEGOs. Check out more of Matt’s creation on his Flickr page or jump on in for a few more screenies…

Twitter, Mario, and Zelda shoes? Sneakers for the ultimate geek.

  • June 1, 2010 10:46 am

We’ve all heard the saying “Don’t wear your feelings on your sleeve”. Well, something like that anyway. But what about geeky passions on your feet? One aspiring design student is creating some of the coolest geeky footwear to date…

The city of games: Buildings modeled after gaming consoles.

  • May 22, 2010 10:47 am

Before you get too excited, we must mention that these are renderings and not actual buildings. Bummer, I know. How cool would it be to tell your friends you live in a giant NES? You’d be the envy of geeks everywhere.

Can’t find the right computer case? Turn that empty desk draw/cabinet into something suitable. [Mod]

  • April 9, 2010 10:29 pm

There have been plenty of computer case mods that mimic desks or are built straight into desks entirely. This particular computer case/computer desk mod by Overclock.net forum member “MoonPig” just so happens to be one of the neater and cleaner mods that have drifted by my eyes. Inside the inconspicuous looking desk, the usual assortment of computer parts and wiring is visible. The real part that gets me however is the view from above — a nice, big skylight to look down onto all the PC geekery contained just a few inches beneath the workspace. It almost makes me want to do my own, though I still love my HAF 932 too much to part with it.

Anyone else see a case mod coming in their near future?

How cool is your home decor? Super Mario furniture is just the ticket.

  • March 8, 2010 6:19 pm

Modders, hackers, geeks, and nerds. We’re all creative in our own ways when it comes to gadgets and electronics. But there are so many other ways we can show off and build things that aren’t exactly electrical in nature yet still have strong cues to the geek culture we so thoroughly enjoy. So how exactly do you “branch out” into other areas? By making geeky furniture of course (or in this case, having your girlfriend make it). First off, a g/f that is a serious gaming nut — hook, line, and sinker. Second, strolling around your house everyday and looking at authentic looking lightsabers and Super Mario blocks all over the place is a dream come true for just about any geek I would assume. Judging by the picture above, these people look pretty serious right?

[Everything was] created by my girlfriend Judith for her apartment. We both love video games, especially Super Mario. She’s currently studying Mechanical Engineering in Germany and has also built an incredible lightsaber for my birthday. She’s a hardcore Super Mario Land (Game Boy) gamer and we both are fans of the whole franchise.

I designed the shelf for our growing collection of videogames (almost 200 Wii games) and I thought the boxes would be perfect with the backround [of hills] and a cloud (all made of wood). Beside the shelf was a small table for the phone and the Internet and I thought it would be cool if we could have a warp pipe too. So she’s created the warp pipe based on a garbage can [that] big enough to hide all the cables.

We’ve bought the figures and the mushroom to make it perfect. I designed the Game Boy clock [to include] the Super Mario Land scene with objects as numbers, because it is her favorite game … It works very well with the wall color and it’s not too colorful …

Currently she’s working on a small Koopa shell (the same size as the mushroom) for the shelf. So I’m just the guy with the ideas and she’s my Super Judith! ;o)

Ok, I’ve got to meet these people. They would be the coolest neighbors…ever.

Run OS X 10.3 (albeit painfully slow) on a Nokia N900!

  • January 31, 2010 8:50 pm

OS X 10.3 + Nokia N900 = All kinds of geeky smiles. I know that mobile phones are gaining power and versatility by the day, but damn! Have you ever seen such a “modern” OS running on such a mobile device? Then again, if you call a 90+ minute boot-up time “modern” or “fast”, you deserve to be drop kicked in the face.

Moving on…the heroics of this feat come from the land of Finland, by a man who goes by the name of ” Toni Nikkanen”. Actually spending the time to get all of this digital tom foolery to work tells us two things. (1) It’s either very boring up there in Finland or (2) this man just really loves his electronics. I’ll let you decide. But that’s besides the point.

Using the knowledge contained within his nerdy little head and an N900 app called “PearPC” to emulate the PowerPC evironment, Toni was able to install OS X 10.3 (Panther) onto his beloved N900. The “damn” and other implied excitement above are a bit early unfortunately as the N900 simply can’t keep up with the demands that “modern OS” requests as highlighted by the 90+ minute boot time above, resulting in slow and pretty much useless interaction with the device and OS itself in it’s current form. ‘Tis a shame.

Hopefully someone with the know how could take this proof of concept and widdle it down further into an actual usable model. Until then, enjoy the video below showing off that feature film length boot time. Hey, it may be slow and unusable, but you can’t knock the guy for tryin’, right?

Star Trek webcam reeks of geek.

  • December 23, 2009 2:49 pm

You could be like millions of other ordinary people on this planet and use the boring, no doubt crappy, and simply uncool webcam that came with your computer. Of course, if you really care about your nerdy reputation you could go “all out” and make use of the Star Trek Webcam.

Said cam features a nifty spiraling base that almost defies gravity and physics itself, giving the optics inside an optimal angle to capture your smiling face. It’s cool. It’s nerdy. It’s cheap. I don’t think most Trekkies will bat an eye at a $30 asking fee do you?

Though if quality or HD is anything important you’re best leaving this one in the box to fulfill it’s collector status as it’s a measly 300k resolution webcam (read: terrible). So while form trumps function once again, it is for a greater good I guess. A geekier, nerdier good. Godspeed.
