Android 2.3 Unofficially Comes to Nexus One. #gingerbread #android #nexusone

  • December 17, 2010 10:27 pm

The Gingerbread source code that was recently released is currently being re-worked and ported across to various different Android devices. Oddly enough however, the Nexus One isn’t getting the love and attention either by Google or the developer world that it once was. With that said, if you just can’t wait for official Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) support from Google, one crafty Android dev by the name of Chris Soyars is your new friend. He took said code and packaged up an easy to install .zip file so that Nexus One owners can join in the Gingerbread party too.

There are some caveats to be aware of though. Currently, Chris’ special ROM is bone stock Gingerbread — that means there are not any Google Apps pre-installed. On top of that, the camera on the N1 isn’t functioning quite yet either. But if you really must have Gingerbread on your N1 now, head over to Chris’ site and get to downloading. Otherwise it shouldn’t be too long before N1 users get an official nod from Google.

Is the wait enough to break you, or will you cave in and forgo Google Apps and a functioning camera?

The end of an era: Google closing down Nexus One Forums.

  • October 26, 2010 12:37 pm

The Nexus One was supposed to usher in a new era in the cellular world. Gone were the carrier’s archaic controls levied upon their consumers. Instead, choice would reign supreme. And then Google decided the whole BYOP (bring your own phone) wasn’t right for them and pulled out. HTC announced a couple of months back that they were done producing Nexus One units. And now, the final nail in the coffin is here — Google is closing down the Nexus One Forums.

The self-hosted forums were no doubt a huge benefit to the hundreds of thousands of geeky N1 users. But on November 1st, all of that information becomes read-only (read: no new posts). Looks like N1 users will have to rely on 3rd party Android forums for their Nexus One news/troubleshooting techniques.

Did any of you still use Google’s own N1 forums?

MeeGo coming to an Android near you. Nexus One first up on the table.

  • September 26, 2010 12:49 pm

The Nexus One is to many, “the” ultimate Android device even after several other more powerful devices have been released. The reason being is that it’s Google’s one and only self branded, carrier agnostic phone. But that whole “Android” thing is getting so old, isn’t it? How about we slap some MeeGo on there, hmm? A team of developers has started with Google’s Jesus Phone as a solid base, with plans to expand to the Dell Streak and HTC Desire in the coming weeks/months.

For those interested in more, be sure to add @vgrade (Nexus One) and @Termana (HTC Desire) to your Twitter list-o-friends in order to keep up on the action. Hop inside to see a few more shots of the magic as well as a video showing of the Dell Streak in particular, showing off it’s new face…

BestBuy blocks jailbreakme.com. Geek one-ups their one-up, uses N1 hotspot to regain access.

Video of an iPad/iPhone being cracked in an Apple store via the new Jailbreakme.com 2 update is definitely noteworthy, though not really worth an entire post. However, news of a BestBuy blocking jailbreakme.com only to have a snarky geek use his Nexus One’s hotspot feature to get around BestBuy’s block — priceless. +1 for the nerds. Video of the riveting action inside…

Update: Nexus One becomes space cowboy, pays dearly for the privillage.

  • July 28, 2010 11:00 pm

Matthew Reyes, self titled “Freelance scientific molecular evolutionary biological videographic NASA microgravitational & space education specialist”, decided to strap a couple N1s to a model rocket and have it capture the entire ride up…and down. The laws of physics don’t bend for anyone or anything. The first phone went up naked, unprotected by such physics defying contraptions like a parachute. The end result was a painful death. The second one however was attached to a parachute. In the end, it is the second phone that survives and brings back the sweet footage of the whole trip. Hop inside and check it out!

Update

I’d like to point out that I flubbed this one. I wasn’t careful with distinguishing two different phones and tests, resulting in a factually flawed article. For that, I apologize. The phone that was smashed and destroyed as originally posted was actually the first of two phones. The latter of which you see in the video inside, blissfully twirling down to earth compliments of its parachute.

Galaxy S’s TouchWiz launcher ported to Nexus One

Have a penchant for choosing option (D) when there’s only really (A) (B) or (C)? Such are the folks that inhabit XDA-Developer Forums. Taking life’s lemons and making chocolate milk is their way of life. Along those same lines, Samsung may slap TouchWiz on their devices and their devices alone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have their trippy UI on your Nexus One.

The talented “rolle3d” over at XDA managed to whip up the TouchWiz UI into a handy little .apk file ready for install on a Nexus One near you. Mind you, there’s one big thing Nexus One hopefuls should know — it’s slow, as in really slow. If you’re been rockin’ ADW launcher or LauncherPro Beta/+ you’ll find that TouchWiz atop vanilla Android on the N1 is not smooth. But it’s the concept that really matters. You can have a Samsung exclusive UI on an HTC device. Hacking at it’s finest.

Anyway, hit up the thread over at XDA for the download.

Get your TouchWiz on with Froyo (and Eclair). Bonus: No root needed!

If Android’s vanilla wrapping is getting a bit long in the tooth for you, there’s plenty of options to be had via the Android Market or even one of many, many Android forums. Customization is one of Android’s strong suits. But what if you wanted Samsung’s TouchWiz3 up and running on your Eclair or Froyo device? Why yes, you can now have that too. Best get a jump on it before Samsung get’s all Cease and Desisty over it…

[TouchWiz for Froyo (and Eclair)]

Nexus One gifted with 720p video recording.

The N1 was a short lived attempt by Google to reinvent the way consumers acquire mobile hardware. It was a noble effort. But ultimately wasn’t what we all wanted apparently. Even still, the N1 itself is a fine piece of Android hardware. Though leave it to the “Android underground” world of hackers and devs to truly unlock the devices potential.

What am I saying? 720p video recording baby…

Have you gotten Froyo yet?

  • May 22, 2010 8:46 am

Another Froyo/Android post? Bare with me folks, this one is very exciting — for Nexus One owners that is. Google mentioned at their I/O conference late last week that Froyo would begin rolling out for the N1 in the coming few weeks. I guess Google’s definition of “coming few weeks” reads something more like “a few hours” because it’s coming…now…
