Old school P2P music transfers: DIY Vinyl record copies.

  • July 29, 2010 10:18 am

Even with all of the convenience and other sonic qualities of digital music files, some people simply prefer the sonic fidelity of good ‘ol fashioned vinyl records. Amongst the supporters, hardcore audiophiles tend to pop up as the natural, slightly warm analog sound is something that many claim digital audio just can’t reproduce faithfully. Nevertheless, regardless of where you stand, it’s easy to see that making backups of your precious records aren’t quite as easy as hitting “copy”/”paste”. But in reality, it isn’t too far off.

The great thing with records is that they’re pretty resilient. Not to mention, all of those pits and grooves on the record themselves are real pits and grooves. See where this is going?

Dousing your records in some silicone and plastic is a relatively quick and surefire way to get honest 1:1 backups/copies of your vinyl music on the cheap. This point is further hit home by the fact that multiple copies can be made out of a copy itself — a sort of old school P2P music sharing deal if you ask me.

I’m not into vinyl records, but can definitely appreciate the spirit of self preservation and taking care of your property. Do any vinyl junkies out there employ such methods of backup? Be sure to check out the how-to vid inside…

Depending on who you are, Rubik’s Cubes are either a pleasant yet thought provoking way to pass time or they’re an evil tool put forth by a Satan himself. Definitely two extremes. In reality, you either get it or you don’t. Regardless if you even like Rubik’s Cubes or not, the Pac-Man Rubik’s Cube causes a retro nostalgia to wallow up from within the older gamers bringing them back to a simpler time without fancy graphics and hundreds of hours of game play. In it’s completed state you’ll notice each side adorned with one of the following: Pac-Man, Blinky, Pinky, Inky, Clyde, and ghosts surrounding Pac-Man as he eats a cherry. Often times it is the little, simple things in life that bring the most joy or at least the most entertainment. If the mood is striking and you feel your old time gamer getting a second wind, stop on by PixelBrush’s Etsy page to pick up your Pac-Man cube. Heck, for only $7 how could you not?

Wi-Fan: Stay cool and look geeky just like your great grandmother

wi-fan

Being connected in the digital age is obviously a major goal of many. For many a gadgety geek like us, a simple power outage is like a death sentence. Being disconnected from the grid/outside world instantly closes our window to the world and we become trapped. Trapped inside of a small geographic location. The Wi-Fan, while not able to help you in any way from the just mentioned problem, uses a universally known symbol that represents cordless freedom to keep you cool when then temps rise and the power dies. Modeled after WiFi symbols, Wi-Fan is made from durable plastic to give you the best man made breeze possible. If you’re diggin’ this old school air conditioner, stop by ATYPYK and have a looksie.

N64 Laptop ensures hours of retro gaming on the fly

Sure there have been various consoles parted and stuffed into cases of different sizes. But the coolest one to cross my attention so far is the N64 laptop. Stuffed inside of a PS3 carrying case, the N64 mod brings retro gaming to gamers on the move. While the mod pictured is a bit crude and unrefined, the unit apparently does the intended purpose of giving the creators the added benefit and ease of N64 gaming wherever they please. Not to mention, the game in the picture is one of my favorites and to me, one of the best N64 titles ever: Goldeneye. Of course, what good is a portable gaming system without controllers? Luckily two controller ports are located on the side of the device. If you’re feeling a little crafty yourselves, you can take comfort in knowing that this particular mod won’t run you too much in the cheddar department as all of the parts needed were only a “few dollars”. Cool device of the day? If you’re still reading eagerly awaiting building instructions and some more pics of the dirty, raw internals, head on over to No Where Else and educate yourselves.

While we constantly look forward to what the future brings us in the technology world, drooling over each and every new announcement, sometimes we forget the finer things in life and quit reminiscing about the way things used to be. Thanks to a talented and innovative designer, Daniil Dadiomov, from Art Lebedev, that once forgotten old school digital flare can now be had again, bringing a sense of class and possibly even wisdom to our much faster paced lives. His inspiration – the nice, blocky, un-refined bitmap fonts from the dawn of the computer age. Interested parties who are looking to spice up their humble aboad, office space, mailbox, or whatever else you feel the need to put numbers on will have to choose between 5 different colors including: white, terracotta, metallic blue, green, and magenta. If the style is right and the colors speak to you, set aside $5.77 per letter and stop on by Art Lebedev’s Shop for a chance to stand out in this world in which we live. Stop inside for a few more pictures.

Go retro with the VHS Lamp

If you are older than 15-20, chances are you have at least a few VHS tapes sitting around collecting dust.  While you can of course sell them for the ever popular dollar bill, it isn’t likely that you’ll make much if anything at all.  Do you really think people are scrambling for VHS tapes?  In order to lighten the load on your attic floor and free up some space, the VHS Lamp will at least claim a few of your VHS tapes giving you a lighting fixture and freeing up some room all at the same time.  Now, is taking a few $5 tapes and gluing them together more or less seem like a $60 venture?  If so, head on over to Etsy and claim your prize.  Illuminate your house in pride.
