Buffalo introduces world’s first USB 3.0 4-port hub.

  • February 15, 2010 8:02 am

While most “normal” computer users creep along with USB 2.0, the geeks in the world are intently fixated on USB 3.0. 2010 is the year that it will finally go mainstream. While pretty much all mobile electronics are still being released as USB 2.0 only, getting the necessary end user equipment ready for the big change is a task worth undertaking sooner rather than later to avoid heartache and slow speeds. To help you make the transition, Buffalo is here.

Labeled as “World’s First USB 3.0 4-port hub”, the BSH4A03U3 is your standard looking 4-port hub that will be available in either black or white and feature not only USB 3.0 support, but backwards compatibility for USB 2.0 and 1.1 as well. In case you needed a refresher as to why USB 3.0 matters, transfer speeds *theoretically* top out at 5Gbps — a far cry from USB 2.0′s (also theoretical) 480Mbps. If you do a lot of large file transfers, you need USB 3.0.

Look for this miniature beaut to hit Japan come March for $88 USD and the rest of the world sometime thereafter (US release not yet known).

10-port USB Hub: If you have to ask, you just don’t understand

  • October 21, 2009 8:29 pm

I’ve got a few USB gizmos laying around here and there as well as more legit devices such as hard drives, I/O devices, etc. But in all reality, I don’t have 10 things that I would ever need to use at once. I’m sure that there are people out there though that would benefit from having such wide flexibility. You know, they only make stuff like the 10-port USB hub above because someone, somewhere requested such a device. As hubs grow, keeping physical size to a minimum means port spacing becomes less and less. So that cute little fat assed duck USB drive your grandma gave you won’t work here. Devastating I know. Somehow we’ll carry on. One thing that does strike me as cool is the ability to power down half of the hub that is going unused allowing you to save a few dollars on your utility bill. It won’t help you afford that new BMW you’ve had your eye on. But, every little bit counts. Apparently we Americans or anyone else outside of Japan aren’t quite geeky enough to need one as this is a Japan only gadget for now. So, if you really want one, better work on saving up that 4,980 yen needed.
