How about another look at the well known about BlackBerry 9800 Slider? Compliments of Engadget, this early exclusive runs through the full gamut of hardware related things and even touches on the OS 6 running underneath. Speaking of which, OS 6 on this latest piece of hardware has subtle (read: very subtle) UI tweaks. They didn’t jump out at me the first, or even second time through. We’ll see if your eyes are more eagle-like than mine.
On the hardware front, globe trotters will be happy to know that quad-band 3G is supported making this a bonified world traveling phone. And the keyboard — well, it’s a BlackBerry so it’s bound to be pretty close to awesome.
The carrier is either a blessing or a curse depending on where you live, how densely populated your city is, and how many planets are aligned at the time of your call. If that wasn’t clear enough — AT&T.
What do you guys think? Hop inside for a couple more pics or head on over to Engadget for the full show.
That love-it-or-hate-it 9760 *fat* clamshell Berry that’s been seen in leaked photos here and there took a big step today. Highlighting OS 6 on non-touchscreen devices, the 9670 clamshell spent a solid ten minutes in front of the video camera giving us not only a fair amount of info on OS 6, but on that 9670 hardware as well.
The verdict is still up in the air for me. I’m a sucker for “out there” styles. But this extra wide load clamshell is definitely pushing the envelope for what I’d consider “stylish”. Feel free to disagree after giving the two videos inside 1/6 of an hour of your attention…
Get out your salt shakers folks. It’s that time again. Today’s grain-o-salt rumor revolves around the BlackBerry 9700. Specifically, a refresh of the 9700. From what can be gathered at this point, it looks like the refresh will be extremely minor — a bump up to 512MB of RAM, 5-megapixel camera, and OS 6.0 on board.
Granted, the jump from 256MB to 512MB is large jump in the smartphone world. Though it’s the rest of the hardware (and BlackBerry OS overall) that doesn’t necessarily make the best of all that power. Still, for someone who’s looking at picking up a 9700, perhaps it’ll be worth your while to hold off a bit longer. We’ll see what comes of this.
Would the aforementioned hardware and software changes keep you from upgrading?

While I criticized RIM pretty hard, the addict in me still looks favorably on the old friend as I long for something new and exciting. 5.0 was supposed to be launched Aug/Sept according to several pieces of documentation that circulated over the summer. Obviously August is gone and September is quickly heading that way. So what now? We wait longer. According to RIM as they talked tireless at several BlackBerry symposium events, 5.0 for the enterprise and developer networks is already starting to move out meaing device software will be here before the ball drops for 2010. Not quite in line with the original Aug/Sept time frame but forgivable none the less. However, it is worth noting that 5.0 won’t immediately be available for all devices receiving the upgrade, simply 5.0 will begin to ship for handheld consumer devices. Notably the first to receive the update will be new handsets such as the 9700/Onyx/Bold. While my previous criticism stands, it is at least somewhat reassuring that a large update is coming soon.
