While we can assume that money is all but absent, we can at least say that Pystar has some fight in them. An extremely quick recap for those out in the cold: Since 2008, Pystar has been selling Mac clones for far cheaper than Apple ever could and, with the recent release of Snow Leopard began installing OS X from their factory. Apple sued. A ruling was levied that at first looked to seal the deal and flood Pystars coffin full of nails. With that out of the way, we can continue.
I myself have come to the conclusion that the inevitable was going to happen — Pystar was going to be obliterated by Apple’s highly poised team of legal bengals, ready to shred any foe to pieces. And for the most part, Apple has succeeded. If the countless lawsuits and lack of cash don’t ruin Pystar, I’m sure the few investors will. You know, after finding out that goals of nearly 100,000 units were short by, oh, say 99,250. Those two revelations don’t exactly bode well for the Mac Cloner. Yet still they press on. The latest news surrounding the issue however is quite a surprise to say the least, with the possibility fact that the two dueling computer makers have reached a settlement netting Apple some cash, rendering OS X pre-installed on Pystar computers a thing of the past, and simultaneously allow the Mac clone maker to continue making computers. 180 degree turn? Sure seems like it. So what happened?

Seems as if the Apple/Pystar drama just took another turn for the worst (if you’re on camp Pystar that is). Seems as if Pystar is having a bit of money problems seeping through their secretive layer and has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, meaning any “secret financial backers” will not be publicly known financial backers. Sadly, if Pystar goes under, one brave force that finally stood up to Apple’s monopolistic ways (yes I own a Mac and yes I like it) is now gone strengthening Apple’s every present “tough guy” image. Still, there is a bit of a bright future. Even though Pystar may be dead, OpeniMac and Russian Mac (translated) are the latest 3rd party Mac OS X machines that are ready to pick up the sales slack if in fact Pystar bits the big hard digital one. Are you for or against more hardware options for Mac OS X software? Do you like the choices that would be available, or do you feel that by keeping the environment nice and closed is what makes Apple products so…Apple (you know, meticulously designed and more or less aesthetically flawless)?

Being sued by a multi-million dollar company that could potentially put you out of business means that you should continue selling the products that got you in hot water in the first place. Scratch that, take it one step further and release updated models of said product. Pystar is apparently putting the lawsuit they’re currently in with Apple in the backs of their minds as they have now announced updated desktops with OS X, the “Big Bag of Hurt” formerly known as Blue-Ray, and Nvidia 9800 graphics cards. Definitely a welcome upgrade. I’m sure the graphics card will make its way into the upcoming MacPro refresh that is rumored to be in MacWorld ’09, but the “Bag of Hurt” is one thing Apple can’t/won’t supply. Either way, if you’re into OS X but yearn for up to the minute innards, and don’t mind buying a desktop without any tech support and future upgrades possibly rendered null, whip out your credit cards and start buying!
