Getting bored with modern mapping and navigation technology or do you just want something cool to look at? Traversing the planet via direction from a normal map is what it is. But what if you had to stare at something a bit more old school. What if Google Maps was around in 1982? What would it look like? A quick stop by 8bitnyc.com will help you with that one. The pixelated image above showcases 8bitnyc in all it's classic gloy, compliments of the synapses of Brett Camper. “I crea...
  • Steampunk headphones with bonus video camera on board. Chronicle your life!
    by Dirk
    Posted February 26th, 2010 at 7:41 am
When I seek out a new pair of headphones, the one and only feature I care about is audio quality. Fit is a close second. Appearance however doesn't even come close. But headphones have become so much more in recent years as mp3 players and smartphones have driven us to block out the outside world. The headphones you see above were designed by William Gerwin and feature not only that Steampunk design that is captivating everyone, but a video camera mounted to the side to capture all of yo...
  • The Rubik’s Cube gets a geeky makeover. Colors –> Keyboard keys.
    by Mike
    Posted February 26th, 2010 at 5:34 am
I'll admit I've spent a fair amount of time in my short life so far trying to solve the Rubik's Cube. I admit it -- that damn cube beats me every time. My biggest problem is I lose my patience -- fast. As little as 5-10 minutes into my mind game, I get so fed up that I literally want to hurl that stupid block of colors into the next continent. Maybe, just maybe if I had a Rubik's Cube more to more liking I might do a better job, huh? The Keyboard Rubik's Cube is just the ticket. Desi...
  • Steampunk LEGO model recreates “Voyage to the Moon” in full 3D glory.
    by Mike
    Posted February 11th, 2010 at 5:17 am
What can't LEGO's do or be morphed into? That seems to be the question that keeps popping up in my head. I mean, the little plastic blocks have even been turned into salt shakers. What do you do after that? A recreation of the famous 1902 sci-image featured in "Le Voyage dans la lune" of course. Looking at the picture above, the fact that no detail was spared is easily apparent. The maker responsible, Guy Himber, is no stranger to LEGO/steampunk creations as a quick peek at the link in...
  • The ultimate birthday cake: The “Pac-Man arcade console cake”
    by Mike
    Posted February 9th, 2010 at 7:22 pm
This year for your birthday, don't settle for just any cake. Normal people eat normal cake. We're far from normal here at Gadgetsteria. And chances are ,if you've come here more than once, you too fit the same bill that we do. Hey, don't take it as a criticism. It takes a special kind of person to be a geek. Aaaaaand back on topic... The traditional cake is out. The geek cake is in. What exactly constitutes a geek cake? Anything really. It doesn't necessarily have to be an electroni...
  • TetrisTV comes to DISH Network.
    by Mike
    Posted February 5th, 2010 at 1:48 pm
In the age of Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Forza 3, and Final Fantasy, who in their right mind would want to spend any time on Tetris? I can see it as a good time killer for 5-10 minutes and that's about it as the deep story plots and other "free roaming" games have pampered us with countless hours of gameplay. Some still prefer the classics however. Possibly aiming to catch that older gaming market, DISH Network is beginning to roll out a new "game channel" that is quite literal in th...
  • Home design for the retro gamer: The Pac-Man bookcase.
    by Mike
    Posted January 27th, 2010 at 7:31 am
Be geeky. Be retro. Be stylish. Those are the goals of the Pac-Man bookcase. The picture is pretty self explanatory and honestly, how much can you say about a bookcase modeled after a famous retro video game icon? The one thing you'll want is plenty of wall space. The TV doesn't look that big to begin with so it could be a trick of the eye. Still, the Pac-Man bookcase looks pretty darn big. Shock and awe I guess. The real kicker -- price? Talk to the manufacturer because it's not li...
  • So thin is in….? Meet the LG Serie 1: 4:3 cathrode-ray tube goodness.
    by Mike
    Posted January 25th, 2010 at 7:17 am
CES 2010: Samsung unveils gorgeous looking LED LCD TV's no thicker than a pencil and a slew of TV manufacturers make the move to 3D. LG: we introduce to you the Serie 1, a 4:3 "retro-TV" complete with big boxy design and cathrode-ray tube picture that is also very "3D". Uh-oh. Has LG lost their minds? No, not really. Joking aside, this little retro-gem from LG is actually pretty sweet looking (physically) even if the picture won't be worth much. And to all of those bragging of their new ag...
  • And the faucet has been opened: The Steampunk Game Boy
    by Mike
    Posted January 22nd, 2010 at 1:03 pm
Fans of the wild west, classic movies, and the smell of antique automobiles welcome to 2010. It's kind of ironic that we're getting all excited over the Game Boy, a device which was released to the public way back in 1989. But as you can tell, the Game Boy above is so much more than your average GB. This is the Steampunk'd Game Boy. Thankfully, form doesn't trump function with Thretris's creation as the device is fully usable. Besides the drastically improved physical shell, the Steampunk...
  • Tuper Tario Tros. is Super Mario reborn. (Hope you’re up for a challenge…)
    by Mike
    Posted December 30th, 2009 at 11:57 am
Tuper Tario Tros? Is there such a thing? Why yes, yes there is. At first it may seem stupid and unoriginal. And I'll agree, the title fits that bill. But after playing the game for even just a few minutes has created yet another addicting game I must now frequent at least a few times a week. The concept of the game is your classic Super Mario Brothers game with Tetris thrown in. Now that is original and unique to say the least if not a bit odd. When you start out, you do the whole sid...
  • Mario Candy the perfect gift for the geeky sweet tooth.
    by Mike
    Posted December 29th, 2009 at 10:29 am
If you could reach into your TV screen, pick up Mario and bite of his head, would you? Too graphic perhaps? What about one of those magical mushrooms always running around? I mean, a little trip via some organic fungus never hurt anyone too bad right? If such things ping your brain every night as you lie awake in bed, boy have I got a treat (literally) for you. Mario Candies. Thanks to Birthday Express (Mushroom and Gold Star candies) and BigBadToyStore (Question Mark Block candies), the ...
  • SNES Controller becomes self sufficient gaming platform…
    by Mike
    Posted December 22nd, 2009 at 10:25 am
ROM's are a geeks best friend. Today apparently they seem to be a hot topic... Ever want to carry a library of ROM's in a convenient, stylish, and portable form factor that you can take with you from computer-to-computer? The SNES controller above had the guts removed and replaced with the contents of a flash drive as well as a USB hub. The results is a controller that houses all the ROM's you could ever want combined with a single cable allowing you to hook up and play said ROM's on any c...
  • Modern Philco PC makes big bubbly tech cool again.
    by Mike
    Posted December 14th, 2009 at 9:48 am
In many different hobbies and areas of society, retro is all the rage. Clothing is one such market in which old styles are constantly reborn and revamped, presented as new once again. However, in regards to technology, old tech isn't exactly "cool" again. I don't know about you but when I see an old room-sized computer in old books, I don't think "Gee, I wish I could have one of those in my room". Heck, I wouldn't even want to have a modern computer look like one. They're big, boxy, and ugl...
  • Pac-Man Rubik’s Cube brings old school gaming to an old school toy
    by Mike
    Posted September 17th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Depending on who you are, Rubik's Cubes are either a pleasant yet thought provoking way to pass time or they're an evil tool put forth by a Satan himself. Definitely two extremes. In reality, you either get it or you don't. Regardless if you even like Rubik's Cubes or not, the Pac-Man Rubik's Cube causes a retro nostalgia to wallow up from within the older gamers bringing them back to a simpler time without fancy graphics and hundreds of hours of game play. In it's completed state you'll n...
  • Retro gaming all under one, portable roof: GP2X Wiz
    by Mike
    Posted September 4th, 2009 at 7:46 am
The ever increasingly powerful gaming consoles such as the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 have given gamers the ability of near photorealistic games that truly place you in the action. Some games are so graphically intense and beautiful, you may have to at times pinch yourself to make sure you really aren't in the game. Games have come quite a ways from their humble days not so long ago when the bleeding edge of gaming was measured in bits. While modern games and all of the graphical eye cand...
  • Spruce up your interior retro style with Donkey Kong shelves
    by Mike
    Posted August 11th, 2009 at 6:30 am
The old school gamer in you has been through a slew of gaming systems throughout the years each with their defining titles. Perhaps one of the greatest and most known titles in the history of gaming was that of Nintendo's uber popular game Donkey Kong. While nowadays such a game looks godly outdated and too simple. However, back in the day, Donkey Kong was the cream of the crop. If your old school gamer soul has turned into an interior designers soul (haha...jk) or if you simply love to de...
