Twitter’s new design looks like a smartphone app. (I love it)

  • September 14, 2010 8:04 pm

The wait is over folks. For all five of your reading out there, the micro-blogging/social networking site Twitter has let loose it’s new look upon the world. You’ll immediately notice that things look very, very different. To my eyes, it’s leaps and bounds better than the old interface. It manages to look more sophisticated and yet simple.

Physical looks aside, the new design features a never-ending update stream — Yay, no more “click more” crap!! — as well as a second panel on the right that shows trending topics, Twitter user specs, and so on. Though if you ask me, the coolest part of the redesign is that photos and videos open in the right panel, meaning you don’t have to click through to random places on the interwebs to get what you want. Nice! Personally, I’m really liking the new look and can’t wait ’til my accounts get access to it. What your thoughts and feelings? Are you as equally impressed or is it time for pitchforks, dragons, and fire? If you fall into the latter, you’ve only got a few days to a week left. While Twitter says it won’t be available to everyone right away (again, starting only with select users), they don’t offer up any date as to which the rollout will be complete. Guess they can’t fail to meet a deadline if there isn’t one to begin with, huh?

Hop inside for a couple more pics…**Update: Video added after the jump too.

WindowsMobile 7 to feature free navigation apps. WinMo 6.x getting chopped to free?

  • February 10, 2010 11:29 am

I don’t cover WidnowsMobile happenings a whole lot but that may soon change. Windows Mobile 7 is looking more and more exciting as MWC draws closer with my only hesitations being focused on the issues of multi-tasking and Marketplace-only app installs. Other than that, it’s looking good. Really good. New word from MS Mobiles today has revealed some exciting news for travelers (and those whom find themselves lost more often than not) — Free navigation!

Much like Android and Symbian already offer, the next version of WindowsMobile will throw in Navigation outright, making the use of standalone units even less necessary for the mass population. I’ve only used the Google Navigation a couple of times but find it highly accurate and easy to use. Microsoft has a nice bullet point on their hands here. It begs the question: If more OS’s come standard with maps and robust navigation capabilities, how much longer will companies such as Garmin, Navigon, and TomTom last in the mobile software realm?

With all of the hub bub surrounding Windows Mobile 7, previous versions of Windows Mobile have been receiving little, if any news coverage. If you’re fishing for some breaking announcement regarding older versions of WM, sorry to say that feature wise, that ship has pretty much set sail. However, there is still good news to be had. The same source of MS Mobiles is also claiming that without a doubt, after Windows Mobile debuts, Microsoft will cut Windows Mobile 6.x down to FREE.

Such a move may increase the number of low to mid-range WM handsets that get released in the next 6-12 months. Though as fast as the mobile world is moving, I don’t see too many people sticking around with WM 6.x, even if it is free.

The rest of the rumors concerning WM 7 such as Xbox and Zune integration as well as a completely revamped UI still stand. With all of the news we’ve seen the last several weeks, 2010 could be the first year I actually want a WinMo device. Traveling in the same boat as me?

Firefox 4 design gets updated. Possibilities ensue…

  • December 22, 2009 10:48 am

If you had to pick a favorite browser, which one would it be: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera…..Internet Explorer? Apparently the answer to that question is increasingly becoming Firefox. Over the last several quarters, Firefox has been gaining ground on the old giant (IE) so much so that according to recent reports, Firefox now commends more marketshare than IE7 — no small feat. Naturally, a browser that is growing larger by the day would obviously attract some attention concerning a freshened face.

An updated UI to Firefox is far from a surprise. For many, the upcoming Firefox 3.7 was a beacon to a beautified appearance. Although, numerous statements from Mozilla have pushed the full on UI overhaul further down the road for the herald 4.0 release. Even though 3.7 isn’t even here yet, many are anxious to see what a revamped Firefox would look like. Mozilla contributor Stephen Horlander shares many of our interests and as such, has made a few design mock-ups of the Firefox 4 (Windows) layout public on his personal blog.

A quick glance will draw most readers’ eyes to the (almost always) orange tab/button popping up in various forms along the header of the mock-up images. The button will reportedly hold all of Firefox’s “action menus” and allow some customization on the user’s end as well.

These updated UI shots are pretty good looking in my opinion and show what is a simple yet “different enough” update to keep Firefox fresh in the years to come. How do you rate the Firefox 4 UI update so far?

You can check out more info at Stephen Horlander’s personal blog, though you may have to wait awhile as currently his site is getting hammered and returning database connection errors.
