Well that was fast. (Where have I heard that before…?) If you’ve been taking in all of the non-stop Nexus One info, text, images, and video the last day or so and feeling pretty bummed even with your current Android companion, I’ve got something that should breathe a tad bit of fresh air into your aging friend.
The Android 2.1 ROM that comes stock on the Nexus One has been cracked wide open tonight. While not exactly in the proper form to actually port to any other devices quite yet, all of the goods contained within are ripe for the taking. Ringtones, wallpapers, boot up animations, and pretty much any other multimedia related aspect of Android 2.1 (Flan) can now be yours. As always, XDA is the source of the open source sharing goodness. Best start your downloads now folks.
With the speed at which the multimedia goods have been acquired, I’d give the actual OS another day or two of holding out before it too is breached and replicated for the rest of the civilized world. Android how I love thee…
**Update: Spolier alert — nothing too exciting so far in the way of wallpapers and ringtones. There is a few new gems but otherwise it’s rather standard affair. Now a full 2.1 port to my Droid is another thing…
**Update 2: Engadget is reporting that Android 2.1 has in fact been ported to the Droid. The deed actually was reported on last night shortly after I predicted above that it wouldn’t take much longer and after the fact that I had just laid my head down for a few hours of R&R. One thing must be stressed however — it isn’t a full, complete ROM yet meaning it’s best to hold off until an actual ROM is set loose. Again, as mentioned above, give it a couple days folks. Can you believe that just a few years ago, a “cool” ringtone was one of those polyphonic pieces of garbage? Hey, I can’t poke too much fun as even I at one point was captivated by this chorus of simple notes strung together (my how we’ve come so far…). These days, making your own ringtones can come from any number of sources. With Apple’s iPhone being the force to be reckoned with in the consumer smartphone market, customizing said gadget with your own personal flare is pretty desirable. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t all you to create ringtones out of already purchased or 3rd party downloaded songs without paying extra money. My reasoning for such double payments are best reserved for another time and instead focus on what this article is really about — Free stuff! Now that got your attention didn’t it?
The makers of RingtoneStudio are hosting a contest for you iPhone toters to spur sales and get the word out about their product. If you couldn’t gather or long for more info, simply put, RingtoneStudio makes personalizing your iPhone with custom ringtones insanely easy and fun. The more friends and family you sign on board with RingtoneStudio the better as more sales equal bigger prizes. The prize giveaway is broken down into 3 phases:
Phase 1: 3 lucky, completely random users of RingtoneStudio will be drawn each winning a $15 iTunes gift card.
Phase 2: Once sales of RingtoneStudio hit 100 units, 2 more lucky winners will receive $50 iTunes Giftcards.
Phase 3: After sales surpass 250 units, one lucky winner will walk away with the grand prize — a fully *legally* unlocked iPhone 3G
**You do not need to actually purchase anything to be entered into the contest as online entry forms can be found at createiphoneringtones.com/contest/. But remember, if you don’t purchase anything, and the next person doesn’t either, no one will win any prizes. Do yourselves a favor and give a little. It could pay out in the end.
The whole shebang is pretty awesome if you ask me. The contest started on November 1st, but don’t get your little gadget loving self in a twist as you have until November 30th to get in on the sweet action.
If you’re in the mood for some new ringtones for your tele, specifically your Blackberry (hey, I got these from Blackberry forums…represent…what can I say). These free ringtones in question are only in Windows 7 (to my knowledge, feel free to correct me). In order to score the free goods, navigate to:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Ringtones.
If for some reason they aren’t there, you can’t find it, or you simply don’t want to take the 20 seconds needed to get there, you can get those same ringtones here (part 1) and here (part 2). Enjoy the Windows 7 goodness on your mobile. :)
