First Custom ROM Now Available For Motorola XOOM.

  • June 13, 2011 9:27 am

Motorola XOOM owners waiting impatiently for their own custom ROMs can finally breathe a sigh of relief/excitement. A new, lightly modified XOOM ROM called “Tiamat Xoom Rom 1.0″ has popped up over at XDA with some rather nifty tweaks in tow:

  • Tiamat 1.4.4 stock GPU, Root access with SU and superuser, Desktop UA string , Gingerbread style CRT Screen Off Animation, Call setting with SIP and SMS capabilities enabled, Supercircle 100 point battery mod, modified version of Flash player (to work with Hulu), Wifi Ad-Hoc mod enabled, and USB Mass Storage Enabled

The best part about this ROM is that it is based off the stock VZW image meaning compatibility and stability should be top notch. Coupled with a de-odexed system means we should see some rather nice speed gains to boot. On that note, any XOOM should be able to flash the new ROM without hassle, though WiFi-only units may need a full wipe. Though a full wipe between any new ROM install should be a mandatory act.

Have fun kiddies — More over at XDA.

Animated Notification Pulldowns Hit Custom Android ROMs.

  • June 7, 2011 2:59 pm

What’s happening on the bleeding edge of Android these days? Animated notification drawer backgrounds. In the video inside you’ll see that while pretty cool, a lot of work needs to be done. It’s laggy as hell on both the animation and pull down fronts, though has some promise. While we don’t necessarily see Google jumping too fast to integrate this into the next versin of Android, we’re sure that once the kinks are ironed out your favorite 3rd party ROM will sport a similar feature.

Video after the jump…

HTC Listens To Consumers, Promises Review Of Locked Android Bootloader Policy.

  • May 24, 2011 8:50 pm

For many years HTC has been “the” phone manufacturer for enthusiasts in that bootloaders and other digital nannies were at a bare minimum. But recently HTC changed their stance most notably with the HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon Wireless.

In contrast to some of their competitors, however, HTC listens. New statements on the company’s Twitter and Facebook pages signals the company is having a change of heart.

Facebook:

Thanks so much for providing feedback, we hear your concerns. Your satisfaction is a top priority for us and we’re working hard to ensure you have great experiences with our phones. We’re reviewing the issue and our policy around bootloaders and will provide more information soon. Thank you for your interest, support and willingness to share your feedback.

Twitter:

Thanks for the feedback, we’re listening! We’re reviewing our bootloader policy. Stay tuned for more updates.

For the Android-loving root-happy individuals that we are it’s reassuring to know someone cares. Now if only Samsung would follow suit…

Leaked HTC Thunderbolt ROM Contains Fixes Galore.

  • April 19, 2011 8:57 am

The HTC Thunderbolt launched to great fanfare being that it was the first publicly available LTE device. As usual, however, it wasn’t perfect out of the gate.

If you’re growing a bit testy while you wait for Verizon and HTC to issue a string of updates on their own, you can take matters into your own hands. A new ROM has leaked for the Thunderbolt that includes a few requested fixes: New radio version (1.16.00.402), GPS location services fix, LTE/3G handoff issues, proximity sensor, and video playback. There’s likely other stuff baked in, though we don’t have a Thunderbolt on hand to add to the list. Perhaps you can toss us a bone or two…

HTC Sensation/Pyramid ROM Released.

  • April 14, 2011 12:22 pm

The HTC Sensation is the company’s first dual-core Android phone, and it’s a beast. While we’ll still have to wait a little bit to get our hands on the hardware, interested devs (and uber nerdy consumers) can get their hands on the software now. Have at it.

Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) Leaked For Droid 2 And Droid X!

  • March 28, 2011 7:52 am

If Motorola’s approach to Android 2.3 for two flagship devices — the Droid 2 and Droid X — is too slow, taking matters into your own hands is the only real solution. MyDroidWorld has managed to get their hands on * unofficial* Android 2.3 builds for said phones. All you have to is use a Market app called “TBH”, backup your files, and install the update.zip as usual and you’re good to go. Afterwards, you’re treated with a much sleeker (and easier on the eyes) Gingerbread-ified MOTOBLUR. And we must say, MOTOBLUR actually looks pretty decent in its new form. If you’re feeling daring: Droid 2 owners can point their browsers here while Droid X users can head on over here..

HTC ThunderBolt System Dump Weighs in at 140 MB!

  • January 8, 2011 4:57 pm

One of the greatest features of Android phones and the OS overall is that once new phones are released, it doesn’t take long to get new features dumped and ported to other devices. The HTC Thunderbolt is but days old and has already suffered at the hands of eager Android enthusiasts. The source link comes from Android site 911HTC and gives us a 140 MB system dump full of awesome goodies: BitBop, Nav, MobiTV, Mogstup, Rhapsody, Rockband, Skype, Sling, UStream, VCast Music, and VCast Videos. There’s also Blockbuster and Adobe apps (among many others) as well as numerous live wallpapers and other UI treats.

Being that the system dump of the HTC Thunderbolt is so large, you’ll have to download three separate parts. No worries, we’ve assembled them for you already. See below. Let us know how it goes!

Droid X gets first custom ROM detailed on video.

  • August 30, 2010 10:14 am

Within the last couple of weeks, we’ve seen Moto’s Droid X rooted and ripped open for the coding masses to see. It was a pretty big step, though ultimately not the one we really seek. That award goes to custom ROMs. What manufacturers and Google alike forget or neglect to include, 3rd party ROMs add into the mix and then some.

But Motorola’s use of the eForce chip told scary tales for rooting such phones and installing custom ROMs, (and to a lesser extent custom kernels…etc.). But alas, the Android community is tireless and determined. Introducing, the Droid X and it’s first working custom ROM. From the looks of things, it looks like it’s (obviously) the popular Sapphire ROM.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to sit tight a bit longer for the process and/or files to pull of this small feat ourselves. In the meantime, hop inside and watch this little ditty of a motion picture…
