Besides sucking the bottom of the web browser barrel when it comes to browser performance and standards, IE has also had the unlucky glory of looking like trash. The UI was horrible, slow, and clunky. With each new version end users hoped for progress. But instead, Microsoft laughed in their faces and continued on their “our way is the only way” tirade, acting as if their browser was the only browser that mattered and that these silly “browser wars” were below them.
But perhaps Microsoft is finally starting to see the light. Performance in early test builds of IE 9 have shown that there’s potential for some pretty awesome performance. But the oh so sought after new UI that Redmond has hinted to has so far gone unseen…until now.
The image above was found on a Russian site. It doesn’t say outright that this is IE9. For all we know it could be a rendering. But if it is legit, I can finally tip my hat (if I had a hat on that is) to Microsoft. IE9 looks pretty slick. There’s a few alignment issues and other minor button/tab/box placements that could be worked on. Though overall it’s leaps and bounds better than their previous vane attempts.
What do the readers think? If this is IE9, would you use it?
Salt shaker time!!!
Right now, the things that get mobile junkies going is talk of either the tried and true 1GHz Snapdragon processor or the rather new 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird CPU. Both are incredibly fast, with the latter also featuring a dedicated GPU chip. The former however is starting to grow a bit long in the tooth. With that said, some online benchmarks have popped up that show a reported “HTC Glacier” speeding past the rest, with a GLBenchmark 1.1 score of 1,432 frames. When compared to the other phones in the test, it’s pretty obvious to see something hot is being packed under the hood. Rumor has it that it’ll be the first dual-core Snapdragon phone running at 1.2-1.5GHz and is supposedly part of the often talked about “Project Emerald”.
Though, if we’re to be completely objective, we’ll point out that the Samsung Vibrant’s score isn’t too far off the supposed HTC Glacier. And that’s just with the Hummingbird CPU. Perhaps the Glacier isn’t using a dual-core after all and is instead making use of a slightly higher clocked, single-core Snapdragon? Of course, I’d much rather boast about the dual-core. I’m sure plenty of you out there in interweb land would also.
For now, this is pure speculation as the HTC Glacier hasn’t been announced, nor have any other details been found. But the strong evidence detailed by AlienbabelTech that links a T-Mobile “Senior Interaction Designer”, Mike Bibik, and these snappy speed tests all point to at the very least, an upcoming T-Mobile device that is very fast. Whether or not this is part of or is Project Emerald is anyone’s guess at this point. All we can do now is queue the timer. Let the waiting game begin…
It’s certainly not much to look at. Though if that little “3.0″ in the Android Version section turns out to be the real deal, the Android nerds out there could literally explode with excitement. Of course, such subtle things as version numbers are easily faked. Some other food for though — some Linepack benchmarks and browser statistics metrics from several Android websites also showed future versions of Android out and about, albeit in deep cover. Of course, just like the Android version number, linepack benchmarks and browser identifier strings are also easily manipulated.
For what it’s worth, the owner of the image above sent the picture to Phandroid and capped it off with some rather ominous text: “stay tuned for more”. It could mean we’ll see some real (as in real revealing) images of Android 3.0/Gingerbread very soon. The other less welcome outcome could be a multitude of disappointment when nothing happens and we all find out these are fake. I’m hedging on optimism. What about you?
While AT&T may be synonymous with “iPhone”, rumors of an impending end to AT&T’s iPhone exclusivity as well as the nearing of Windows Phone 7′s official release further bolster a new rumor circulating today. It goes something like this: AT&T has just put in and order for 8 million Windows Phone 7 devices. 8 million is a lot of hardware, especially for Microsoft’s mobile division. As of late, shipments of Windows Mobile handsets are at laughably low levels.
The tipoff over the buyout comes from Altimeter analyst Michael Gartenberg. Do take the news with a grain of salt for now however as again, 8 million handsets is a large gamble that AT&T may or may not actually be taking. Not to mention, there aren’t any other specifics such as the manufacturers of the supposed 8 million handset order nor are there any details as to if this is one time buy or a purchase that involves a years worth of orders. Not to mention, the fact that the rumor hedges solely on a single Tweet also calls some extra scrutiny into question…
We all love a good laugh now and then. Whether it’s at the expense of someone else, or a genuine happening of the universe, humor comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors. But being that we’re tech gurus, the things that really make us chuckle revolve around gadgets. In recent memory, there’s no better story to pick fun at than the iPhone 4/Gizmodo Bar blunder that is now pretty much known to everyone.
In the real word, a judge will ultimately decide the outcome of the iPhone 4/Gizmodo leak. But that leaves all of us wondering what exactly Steve would do if here were given the final say. A mystery it is no more. Stop wondering and watch the parody inside…
The jury is still out on if the Aria/Liberty is the same thing as the “Intruder”. Nonetheless, I doubt we’ll have to wait much longer until we find out. Though if anything’s for sure, the pricing for this phone is way beyond outlandish at $700 full retail. In fairness however, that price is chopped down considerably ($129) if you sign your soul over to AT&T for two years.
Still, the full retail generally points to a phone’s overall quality — keyword, *generally*. Is that the case with the Intruder? We’ll have to wait and see. But if it is instead just a rebranded Liberty, the 3.5″ display, 5-megapixel camera, and Sense UI hardly seem like the culprit.

**Update: It’s official: the 4th gen iPhone is — the iPhone 4! Check out all of WWDC 2010 here.
Not like waiting another hour was going to kill you, but a nice little revealing by BreifMobile has shed light on the ever persistent question as to what the 4th gen iPhone was going to be called.
Let’s all work on chanting it as Steve reveals it on stage: iPhone HD.
I’d like to highlight however I’m a bit taken aback by the 5 color choices shown at the bottom left. Apple has never been one to go hog wild with user customizable *physical* options when it comes to their products. Could the HD be different? Is this a mere Photoshop effect? We’ll know soon enough!
MetroPCS may miss out on…pretty much all the cool stuff (as does any smaller regional carrier), but that doesn’t mean they can’t get in on this Android revolution either. If you haven’t noticed, there’s an Android for everyone these days it seems.
So the device in question — the unnamed gadget before your eyes right about. Some basic specs include a 600MHz proc (same as Moto Droid’s) and what appears to be a display in the low 3.x-inch spectrum. Also, considering the fact this baby is shipping with Moto Blur, Moto isn’t shooting themselves in the foot and wasting all of our time (read: it’s coming with Android 2.1). Granted, I’m rockin’ Froyo (2.2) on my Droid right now. But 2.1 is a helluva lot better than 1.5 or 1.6. Hopefully those days are numbered…
Other tidbits such as RAM, ROM, name, release, and price are all up to you to speculate on at this point. Though what we can say is the processor has some potential. Being that it’s shared with the Droid, we can assume that this mystery device will overclock just as well, meaning easy 1.2GHz kernels wringing every last ounce of performance from this beaut (Is it really?).
So there ya have it MetroPCS fans. It’s not an Incredible or EVO 4G, but it’s somethin’. And somethin’ is so much better than nothin’. So take what you can get and hope for the best.
Open up that often used filing cabinet labled “rumor” and place this little gem right inside. Don’t forget to add the grain also. With that said, a fresh rumor sprouting forth from IGN pegs not only glasses-less 3D and rumbling features on the upcoming 3DS, but copious amounts of horsepower. So much in fact that it’s said to easily surpass the Wii and possibly even be approaching the PS3 and Xbox 360! That’s nuts — from Nintendo no less!
