Cyber Monday Sales Top $1 Billion for First Time in History. #cybermonday

  • December 1, 2010 9:51 am

Even in today’s digital world, the old analog classic dubbed “Black Friday” gets all of the attention for sales. And while this year’s Black Friday was on par with previous “good years”, the real talk of the town is Cyber Monday. According to PRNewsWire, Cyber Monday sales topped $1 billion in sales for the first time in history. Specifically, the total Cyber Monday figure stands at $1.028 billion — a 16% improvement over 2009′s $887 billion sales figures.

Looking at the bigger picture, it appears that Black Friday is finally losing its luster. And honestly, why wouldn’t it? Who wants to stand in endless lines winding through cold, dark mornings for a product that is almost certainly going to be sold out long before you ever get up front? It’s exponentially easier (and far more enjoyable) to sit in your warm chair and simply click “buy”? Were you part of Black Friday, Cyber Monday, or both?

Actual shocker: Moto DROID outsells iPhone in first 74 days on sale.

  • March 16, 2010 9:59 am

Alright, why 74 days as a benchmark? It’s a bid odd for sure. The iPhone took 74 days to hit 1 million units sold, so it’s an easy benchmark to go by for other phones. In the case of the DROID, it’s met and surpassed the iPhone’s once thought unbeatable number by roughly half a million — no small feat I’d say. Margin of error is claimed to be pretty low since Flurry’s (the company doing the analytics grunt work) analytics tools are on over 80% of all the devices highlighted above.

I knew the DROID did considerably well for Android, Verizon, and Moto, but I’m definitely more surprised that it even beat the iPhone. A new champ we now have, that is, until summer rolls around…

Anyone else surprised?

360 pwns the Wii’s face in February!

  • March 12, 2010 9:00 am

Now that all the numbers are in, Microsoft’s baby comes ahead of the pack for February Sales in the US. With Nintendo only selling 397,900 for the month, the Xbox 360 pulled ahead with almost 25,000 more units, with a whopping total of 422,000.

I know this isn’t huge news, but if anyone has seen the figures over the last 36 or so months, the Wii usually reigns victorious. This is only the 360′s second win over Nintendo since the Wii’s launch, which we can’t really count because there was limited availabilty for the Wii during the holiday season of ’06. We might continue to see this happen in the months to come, the reason being is the Wii is the only console to see a decrease in sales. Both the PS3 and 360 had major increases.

I’m sure the 360 probably has Bioshock 2 to thank for the jump in sales, but either way, what do you think this will mean for Nintendo? Do you think this is going to be a trend for the company? I’m kinda hoping it will push in production of their Wii 2.0(Wii HD?). I’ve completely enjoyed my Wii since it’s purchase, it has kept my alcohol hazed evenings fun and exciting, I’d hate to see a drop in it’s success for whatever reason. I guess we are going to really wait and see what happens when Sony Playstation’s ‘Move’ is released later this year.

Sony running thin on PS3′s due to super fantastic holiday and upcoming game lineup?

  • February 12, 2010 3:34 pm

Hearing the words “PS3″ and “shortage” together a few months ago would draw out a few chuckles from those in the room. While Sony would like us to think otherwise, since launch the PS3 hasn’t exactly been leading the market in console sales. Up until recently, that honor went to the Nintendo Wii. I never caught on to the Wii mania, but obviously many have.

Fast forward one year and here we sit looking at Wii’s stacking up on store shelves and the once stagnant PS3 now selling like hot cakes. So hot in fact that Sony is claiming a PS3 shortage is among us in the coming months due to the bangup holiday season they saw. A pretty jam packed upcoming game lineup would also do wonder for sales/wreak havoc on supply. Could the tables really have flipped that drastically?

For now I’m staying squarely seated in the middle of the debate as I haven’t seen or heard of any PS3 shortages. But if holiday sales were as good as Sony claims and the new upcoming titles such as “Heavy Rain” and “God of War 3″ have any hand in it, we could very well see Sony’s baby decline in availability.

What do you think? Is there an honest shortage impending or is Sony merely blowing smoke to create a false sense of urgency in picking up a PS3 –> which in turn nets them more sales and money?

T-Mo UK selling user data like cheap narcotic…

  • November 17, 2009 4:25 pm

tmo-storefront

Some people sell crafts. Some people sell services. Some people sell drugs while other people sell user data…waaait…what? Chances are your user data has been sold to the highest bidder — if you’re a T-Mobile UK user. While we’d like to believe carriers have our best interests in mind, we are always getting reminded such isn’t the case. Apparently some jerky T-Mo UK employees took it upon themselves to provide “millions of records” concerning “thousands of users” to third party “phone firms”.

Allow me to set the scene for you — a nice, warm, relaxing holiday get together with your family. You’re sitting down getting ready to feast with family from all over the country of whom you see once a year when all of a sudden your celly starts blaring “drop it like it’s hot” in front of your entire family. It wouldn’t be so bad if you weren’t a 60 year old man, but there’s stranger things in this world…. Upon picking up the phone you’re greeted with an all to chipper salesman trying to pitch a cellular contract renewal or god knows what else just as your taste buds are salivating for a piece of the delectable carcass sitting in front of you, filling your senses with the pleasures of fine cuisine.

Sucks doesn’t it? Such breaches of data on the providers end and disruptions in daily life on the end user’s spectrum are both undesirable outcomes all due to someone getting a little too greedy. Law enforcement in the British Kingdom isn’t taking this lightly thankfully and is even pushing a hasher punishment than the standard £5,000 fine — even presenting jail time as a consequence.

Has anyone’s data been used to steal their identity or do any other kinds of nefarious acts of wrong doing? Not yet. In reality such things are highly unlikely. But it does make us question just how trustworthy these large corporations are, especially when massive amounts of user data are concerned.

T-Mo UK users: Any good/bad/indifferent experiences to share regarding this not so cheery development?

Apple’s Black Friday sale prices spied?!

  • November 16, 2009 7:14 pm

apple-black-friday

Even if your Christmas tree is a bit sparse and your holiday meal is a microwave dinner delight, you can rest assured that you won’t lose any sleep over any of Apple’s pricing this fine Black Friday. If a leaked poster is to be believed, Black Friday 2009 will be quite a winner for Apple with a rather rare showcasing of generosity by the Cupertino giant. The supposed discounts as they appear:

  • Up to 15% off of all accessories, hardware, and software
  • Up to 25% off of all Macs (Hello 27″ Core i7 iMac)
  • Up to 30% off all iPods
  • **iPhone and iPod Shuffle excluded

A bit bewildered as to why iPods, the device that is losing steam is getting the most off? That’s the answer to the question — slowing sales means deeper discounts. Well, I assume anyway. As for the rest of the deals, they look pretty darn good. Enough to coax you into opening that wallet of yours?

Best Buy: “We want your mobile dollars”

  • June 24, 2009 3:37 pm

bb-mobile

Since the original iPhone debuted a little more than two years ago, mobile internet usage has sky rocketed. Naturally, resellers want to get in on this lucrative market and make put a few bennies away in the bank. You may have noticed in recent outings to the well known electronics giant, Best Buy, that their mobile phone section got a relatively large boost in size. It is all part of their grand plan to open 40 new, standalone mobile phone stores in hopes of capturing a bigger chunk of all U.S. mobile phone sales, 15% to be exact. In case your inner cat had a case of curiousness, Best Buy currently accounts for roughly 3% meaning they’ve got to have improvements upwards of 500% — no small task to say the least. Though the goal is lofty, no date has been set as to a “goal date” in which to reach that goal. Slow and steady always beats fast and rushed everytime. Now if only Best Buy would drop the ridiculous and infuriating habit of using nothing but dummy phones…

Palm lets go of 50,000 Pres on opening weekend?

  • June 8, 2009 9:54 am

pre

Consider this rumor and speculation until Sprint, Palm, or some other reliable source cares to divulge further on the matter. The smartphone release of the weekend, the Palm Pre has been reported to have hit the 50,000 unit sold mark. Again, the numbers have not yet been confirmed. Even though it is roughly a third of the iPhone’s opening weekend sales, 50,000+ units in weekend time span is no small feet. Maybe if the didn’t have that “shortage” there would have been some more Pre’s for the peeps? Success or failure?
