“Diminished Reality” removes objects from video in real time!

  • October 21, 2010 11:56 am

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you didn’t exist? Perhaps something a little less deep — what if that hub cap on the car wheel were different? What if the building didn’t have some garish box jutting out of the side? Thanks to some researchers at Germany’s Technische Universität Ilmenau, now we can answer at least two of the three questions above. (Sorry, we can’t help you with questions regrading your existence at this point and time.)

The technology has the nickname “Dimished Reality”, and essentially works much like augmented reality. Except, the only difference (and it’s a big one) is that the process is all live, in real time, using video. The image above gets the point across. The video inside causes your shirt to turn into a drool rag. So get clickin’…

ThinkGeek Celebrates: 30 Years after the Empire struck back…

  • October 5, 2010 1:52 pm

What were you doing 30 years ago? Me? I wasn’t even a hapless floating protein in my mothers head. If you were more than a simple thought, however, you were probably there to see Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back in theaters. (You lucky devil you.) Even though I was born after the initial Star Wars trilogy was released, I still grew to appreciate the series for what it was — awesome. Over the years, Star Wars has only gained in popularity with countless fan clubs and downright cult-like groups professing their undying faith for the sci-fi flicks.

Naturally, new gear to rock your Star Wars fetish is always a welcome addition 30 years after the fact. With that said, ThinkGeek has two new goodies for all you Star Wars fans to get crazy over — the Wampa Rug and the C-3PO backpack. Starting with the latter, the C-3PO backup is…well…a backpack. You put stuff in it. Except this one is ultra nerdy because it’s Star Wars. As for the rug, it’s 62″ x 30″ in size which means it’s perfect for cuttin’ — or whatever else it is you may find to do on him.

$99.99 for the Wampa Rug and $59.99 for the C-3PO backpack.

Space Invaders constructed with Star Wars mini-figs.

  • August 12, 2010 8:55 am

Space Invaders scenes constructed out of miniature Star Wars figures. Does it get any geekier? I’d love to see you find something that is. From the brain of Chris McVeigh, the Star Wars Space Invaders plaque would make a fine addition to any wall. Too bad it’s not my own. But hey, it’s motivation for myself to get out there and get crafty. Be sure to check out Chris’s other nerdy toom foolery on his Flickr page.

LEGO Recreates: Inception the movie.

  • August 2, 2010 8:09 am

On a slightly lighter and less repulsive note than the Real Piggy Bank, someone has taken everyone’s favorite geek toy (Hint: LEGOs) and crafted them to depict arguably one of the best summer movies (another hint: Inception). Actually, it wasn’t just one scene, but several, created by Flickr users Profound Whatever and Ochre Jelly’s.

Once you get bored of Inception-only themes (how dare you), be sure to step through the rest of the duo’s LEGO creations. They’re pretty cool. And honestly, who doesn’t like looking at LEGO stuff? Jump on in to see a few of the Inception-ized LEGO scenes highlighted in all their glory…

Update: Adidas TRON shoes stop a few feet short of are pure awesomeness.

  • July 26, 2010 7:05 am

Hearing of some Adidas TRON shoes sounds awesome enough in text. Seeing a picture like the one above is like Holy Shiat! Finding out they don’t really have any glowing light whatsoever is the kick in the pants at the end. While it’s unfortunate the TRON shoes above don’t really glow with any self illumination, the glow-in-the-dark stitching and other reflective properties play off lighting and light angles to give off the impression of glowing.

No, the they’re not as cool as they could be. Nonetheless, they’re TRON shoes that will no doubt make a statement — and all of this hype a full 6 months before the movie is even released. What are you guys doing in 6 months?

Whataya know, dreams do come true. Turns out that glowing goodness is the real deal, and made with the same material as the official TRON suits in the movie — “Elastolite” (OryonTech).
