  • June 21, 2011 8:39 am

Many weeks after a little known hacker group called LulzSec started hacking various companies and organizations around the web comes fresh reports from Essex, England that the alleged mastermind has been arrested. The 19-year old isn’t specifically named, though is said to be “the mastermind” behind the entire Lulz operation as detailed by numerous pieces of evidence found when searching the suspect’s Wickford, Essex house.

In an interview with Sky News, a Scotland Yard spokesperson said:

“The arrest follows an investigation into network intrusions and distributed denial of service attacks against a number of international business and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group.

Searches at a residential address in Wickford, Essex, following the arrest last night have led to the examination of a significant amount of material.

These forensic examinations remain ongoing.”

The suspect is being held under the Computer Misuse Act and Fraud Act in a joint effort between the FBI and Scotland yard.

Be sure to keep checking Gadgetsteria for the latest Lulz news.

denied the alleged mastermind above is the actual leader.

“Seems the glorious leader of LulzSec got arrested, it’s all over now … wait … we’re all still here! Which poor bastard did they take down?”

SEGA Confirms: 1.3 Million User Accounts Hacked.

  • June 20, 2011 6:56 am

The manhunt is on for hackers who infiltrated SEGA’s “Sega Pass” online gaming account service. In total, 1.3 million user accounts were compromised with the unknown hackers walking off with full names, addresses, account username/passwords, and more. At this time it doesn’t appear that finacial information such as social security and credit card numbers were taken.

SEGA maintains that the Sega Pass system will remain offline for the time being while the company races to discover the full scope of the breach as well as shoring up any leaky holes future hackers may attempt to gain access though.

When questioned by Reuters, SEGA spokesman Yoko Nagasawa stated:

“We are deeply sorry for causing trouble to our customers. We want to work on strengthening security,”

Ironically, the hacker group Lulz Sec who infamously hacked into Sony Pictures a couple weeks back denied any involvement with the most recent SEGA Pass and even went as far as requesting SEGA contact them (Lulz Sec) for help in hacking/”punishing” the hackers responsible.

It goes without saying, anyone who uses the SEGA Pass system should keep a close eye on their financial accounts over the coming weeks.

N64 crammed into game gear casing. Geekery ensues…

  • July 16, 2010 7:18 am

For every hardware mod I see, I think to myself: “How can it get any better?” Thankfully I’m surprised and proven wrong fairly frequently. Things do get better. Quite often actually. How else would you describe the N Gear 64 modded together by “Evil Nod”? Evil Nod, if you’re listening, I’d love one of these. All I can think of is mobile GoldenEye sessions. Oh what a sweet sweet day that would be…

Today, Steam is making that a great deal easier with 11 new classic Sega Genesis games ripe for the pickin’. The best part is that they’re only $2.99.

Sonic 4 detailed in pictures! Coming this summer.

  • March 19, 2010 5:38 am

Call me a child, a nerd, a dork — whatever. Sonic the Hedgehog is the sh*t! Back in the SEGA Genesis hayday, this little blue creature kept me occupied for hours on end many a weekend. No joke. So when word spread of a new, revamped Sonic, I was beyond ecstatic.

The new Sonic the Hedgehog while still a 2D scroller (nice retro touch) is still a sight for sore eyes, with a much more polished UI and fluid gameplay. Starting this summer, the little blue hedgehog will be fully available to the masses on WiiWare, PSN, XBL, and some “mystery platform”. (SEGA getting a second wind…?!) But, starting now, any hyped up nerds (such as myself) can get in on the action early and download the music from Act 1: Splash Hill. Excited yet?

Official, legal emulator heading to iPhone. Tip your hats to SEGA.

SEGA!

That iconic SEGA voice of the early 90′s still rings lound and clear in my head. It seems as if just yesterday I was crowded in a corner of my room on the floor playing Sonic on my SEGA Genesis. *dreaming* Oh those were the days.

I’ve come a long way in only a decade as has the consumer electronics/gaming industry. It’s funny to think back to when I was awestruck by a black box playing games on a big tube TV with graphics power measured by “bits” and animals/humans being represented as literal blocks. And now we have mobile platforms such as the iPhone completely re-writing the book on mobile gaming.

I won’t lie, I enjoy my fair share (read: gigs) of ROM’s on my jailbroken iPhone for it keeps me entertained and able to pass the low points of the day. For as long as I can remember, this little time waster of mine and many others has been looked down upon by the various entities and groups responsible for putting out each and every video game. They say I’m a thief, you’re a thief. But what they’re really saying is “we’re” too lazy or greedy to open up support for other devices — until now.

SEGA is finally, finally seeing the light as new reports detail an official SEGA emulator for the iPhone dubbed “Ultimate Genesis”. As one can guess, a good of popular SEGA games will eventually make their move to the small screen with some of the larger titles debuting first. And of course, now that we can do the whole in-app purchase tango, growing your library of golden relics will come easier than ever.

You know, I really wish they had this when I was a kid.

Look for Ultimate Genesis to drop in the App Store within a few weeks with ROM’s going for on average of $5 a piece. Oh yeah!

The Sega Genesis iPhone Dock

If you’re looking at the image above wondering if it’s plausible….or even fully working, I can honestly say yes, yes it is. The photo above shows the end result of an old Sega Genesis tear down by Wired’s Charlie Sorrel. According to Charlie, their was plenty of room to jam some small speakers inside and make this Japanese Genesis belt out tunes in line with some of the greater iPod docks. But in the end he choose to keep things nice and simple. Hey, I’m simply amazed in wonderment at the sheer geekery of everything before my eyes. This and a whole lot more can be seen back in Chris’s original post over at Wired. I don’t know about you, but every time I come across old antique gaming junk in the basement I’m going to try and think of all kinds of ways to give it a fresh albeit Frankenstein-ish take on life.
