*Slightly* overpriced would be a good choice of words if you were describing the commitment free pricing on the Palm Pre courtesy of Best Buy online. Though, with Palm’s self created and self proclaimed imminent shortage, the high price could be there to starve off current customers or those looking to go elsewhere other than Sprint into purchasing a Pre and robbing Sprint of some badly needed revenue. What do you think, legitimate price? Or orphice gouging tactics? Is a Pre really worth that much full price? Heck, is any phone worth that much or more full price? It makes the Sprint no commitment price of $549 look like a steal by comparison!

If Boy Genius’s little birdie is singing a truthful song, March 5th will be the date of release for the Treo Pro on Alltel’s network. The launch of the “all-new” Treo Pro so close to the Pre is sure to mean that many people will be holding out for the Pre launch at which point they will either pick one up or switch to Sprint (that’s a change) in order to get a piece of iconic Palm history in the making. The price for the already outdated Pro will lighten your wallet to the tune of $199 (after $125 rebate) and require two years of your life be signed over to Alltel. Is the Treo Pro really worth all that money…I don’t think so again seeing as how the leaps and bounds better Pre is getting ever closer. But I’m their are a few out there who would rather have the tried and true (and outdated) Windows Mobile 6.1. Or they simply don’t know about the Pre to begin with. So, if you’re an Alltell customer are you excited?

One of HTC’s biggest announcement, (to North American’s anyway), was that of the TouchPro2 comming to North America. Long has N.A. been given the less than warm shoulder in the sense that many of HTC’s latest and greatest came across the pond many weeks and sometimes many months after our European friends had been yakin’ it up on the same devices. After the TouchPro2 was initially announced at MWC, many hopefull N.A. dwellers anxiously awaited word of the sweet TP2 making it’s way stateside. That confirmation came by way of two Twitter posts (Twit 1), (Twit 2). Awesome! We can all dance in the streets, buy glow sticks and fog machines in mass quantities, and go all out crazy. Hold on just one second. While a release is now garunteed, the actual date is still up in the air with but a vague “Q2″ given. So hold off on the glow sticks and fog machines for a couple more weeks folks. Remember, All great things in life require work, time, or money! For those of you that have somehow forgotten, the TP2 will launch sporting WinMo 6.1 (6.5 will be added once launched) and have a 528MHz Qualcomm processor, 288MB of RAM, microSD slot, 3.2 megapixel still matter capture device, and a 1500mAh battery that ensures you won’t have to camp by a wallout let that often. For the completely geeked out there, the day is coming, you just have to wait a little longer.

It’s no secret that on Palm Pre launch day, there will be lines of people waiting, just as there were for the iPhone and G1. How long will those lines be? As long as Apple’s? Hard to say. I would have to guess no on as long as Apple’s as Palm just doesn’t seem to have a cult with the same values as Apple’s. A lot of Palms “cult” doesn’t consist of the young “hipster” crowd but instead of upper 20′s, 30′s…50′s and so on. Its particularly that older age group that I just don’t see waiting in line for a phone. Even at Apple’s iPhone launches while there were older folk in line, the vast majority were young youthful bodies. Back on the topic at hand, the Sprint exclusive on the Palm Pre is sure to keep many Sprint customers from jumping ship while at the same time actually pulling new ones in…something they haven’t been doing so hot at lately. However, some people either just plain hate Sprint, or have some other type of aversion to CDMA. Whatever the case may be, GSM loyalists jumped for joy when a UMTS Palm Pre was on display. Could it be that the GSM world was also going to get the chance at a Pre?

And we’re not talking flanel panels either. These are high quality all digital panels. Woo hoo! Complete and utter ridiculous non-sense aside, the 4 new panels will consist of: CNN, Skype, Mytopia, and “On-the-road”. Of course with the CNN panel you will be getting the latest in news coverage including everything form sports to weather. The popular “civillian journalism tool” i-Report will also be included so little ‘ol you can be the big journalist you’ve always wanted to be. The Skype panel will make identifying which of your Skype friends are online as well as access to them only one click away. The Mytopia panel will allow the gamers of the crowd who need to kill some time or just simply like to play games the option of doing so. Bingo and Poker were two of the options mentioned although there are many more to choose from. And last but certainly not least is the oddly named “On-the-road” panel. This panel is responsible for brining HUGE icons to your screen which in turn will allow you to control such tasks as music playback, UI navigation, and call handling. Beyond these 4 panels mentioned above, Sony has many more available at Sony Fun. Stop by and see if they have they have that special app to make you go ga ga for the X1!
