The iPhone Horn Speaker: Rock out like it’s 1903

  • October 21, 2010 9:39 am

The usual iPhone dock does things such as charging, syncing, and playing back music via built in speakers. But have you ever seen an iPhone dock modeled after early 1900′s tech? The iPhone Horn Stand Amplifier does just as the name suggests — amplifies the audio coming from your iPhone 3G/3GS/4 with a horn. The same type of effect can sorta-kinda be reproduced by cupping your hand underneath the speaker, which redirects the audio up at you. Of course, the iPhone Horn does that in a much more dramatic way.

Skepticism is a given with “gimmick” gifts such as this. Perhaps the video inside will change your mind…

JBL Snowflake speaker: The coolest iPod accessory that doesn’t exist?

  • July 29, 2010 10:07 am

The world of iPod docks and accessories is probably never ending. If there were one brave soul who decided to catalog it all, it would be a monumental undertaking that would more than likely be the death of him. Poor guy. There’s just so much junk out there. In order to keep your own product from not blending in, you have to be different. Is the Snowflake Speaker different enough?

Sadly, this is nothing more than a concept from the head of designer Sylvain Gerber. But if it were real, would you buy it? To my eyes, it looks like a Ferris Wheel at the fair. You?

Pnoe: Loud, Proud, and in charge. [Audio speakers]

  • July 23, 2010 2:15 pm

What would you do/say/think the first time you walked into a room and saw a couple of Pnoe speakers flanking the walls? A well placed expletive would certainly highlight the magnitude of the situation. Hell, these speakers are huge! They’re called “Pnoe” speakers and are all the rage in Greece (where they’re manufactured) and several other countries on that side of the pond.

The Pnoe’s claim to fame is that due to their design and performance, they make a great set of speakers for large events. Of course, this is more a “hey, only use these in massive rooms or your ears will explode” rather than a simple suggestion. Per the manufacturer, Arcadian Audio:

The Pnoe speaker, being a large horn, is more suited to listening rooms with 3m or more distance between the listener and the speakers.

It’s simple physics — don’t buy these unless you have a great room of epic proportions and can always keep unassuming humans at least 10-15ft way. Because if you don’t, the Pnoe will mutilate their ears and probably make mush out of their brains. Just sayin. Oh, and some deep pockets would be nice too. Interested parties have to contact Arcadian Audio directly for any prices. Usually such methods of sales mean you won’t be buying these on a whim in your Kmart Blue Light special.

With all that said, I want six…

New 0.9mm waterproof cellphone speakers soon coming to a device near you…

  • June 11, 2010 6:47 am

Kyoto, Japan-based “Murata” has a working example of what the next go-to design for speaker technology looks to be — ridiculously skinny speakers. The specific speakers in question are waterproof and a mere 0.9mm thick. It won’t help the rest of your gadget should it slip beneath the unforgiving waves of H20, but at least you can watch your gadget fall to it’s death and listen to it’s death song until the battery takes its last breath.

On a more serious note, I can’t wait to see more hardware components shrink down and get the waterproof treatment. The design possibilities are mouth watering…

BassJump adds some sonic junk to your Macbook’s trunk

bass-jump

Macbook users have come to depend on their digital appendage just as if it were a real attached limb. It offers a good balance of price, power, and looks all wrapped in a nice little aluminum package. The screen is crisp, the processor fast, and the speakers suck..wait what? Yes, the speakers on pretty much any Apple laptop suck. They’re tinny and lifeless, lacking any midrange or bottom end whatsoever. But a new accessory made specially for Mac laptops, the “BassJump”, looks to be quite the worthy upgrade to any music lover finding their Macbook’s sound merely adequate. Keeping mobile users in mind, this portable sub woofer is powered solely by the USB cable so any extra cables and weight can be left at home. As far as getting the sonic goods to your ears, the BassJump makes use of proprietary software that remixes all of the audio and routes standard frequencies to the normal speakers and lower frequencies to the ‘Jump. Think it’s worth the $80 admission charge? The sonic lover in me is leaning towards yes.

Wow your friends with a wooden speaker/clock combo

wooden-speakers-clock

If you like mashup gadgets, that is gadgets that try to impress by blending in multiple technologies, the wooden speaker-clock will surely be added to your list of must have gadgets. These wooden speakers look pretty normal to the naked eye, that is until your fire them up and see the digital clock shining through the wood. While it isn’t a particularly hard task to achieve, seeing any kind of light shine through wood causes one to do a double take just because it isn’t that common.

The two models, the Evergreen DN-WSP1802 (two-speaker) and DNWSP1406 (single-speaker) wooden speakers both feature a 3.5mm audio connection giving your universal connectivity with pretty much any device with an audio output. Sadly, these little wonders are only available in Japan for now meaning you’ll have to pay a pretty nice shipping fee — possibly even more than the modest $25 price tag. Gadget love knows no bounds…
