Fusion Garage and TechCrunch have been going at it for the last several days in a cut throat manner, both accusing the other of lies, deceit, and all kinds of other hurtful things. We all know what Michael Arrington and the entire ‘Crunch team think. Fusion Garage announced today that any IP property or copyright claimed by TechCrunch and Michael Arrington is “ludicrous” and simply not true. Fusion Garage CEO even goes as far as to say that Michael Arrington didn’t do enough — practically anything worthwhile or useful in the advancement and development of the CrunchPad. Ouch. Bickering aside, you just want specs and pictures.

Sadly, no one is going to be impressed with the underpowered specs that include 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 4GB RAM, 5 hours of battery life, and a few other mid to low range features that now cost $500. The OS boots straight into a browser (ala Chrome OS) so native apps are looking pretty unlikely at this point. Overall it looks to me as if Fusion Garage just created another table clone computer that will only appeal to a small, select group.

Ya, so much for actually wanting a CrunchPad JooJoo. At the size and price, I’d rather get a cheaper laptop or a nice smartphone. It’s sad, the CrunchPad was a novel idea. Now it’s legacy is nothing more than a typical over-hyped, under performing hardware/software combo yet again. Anyone still interested?

Nvida mystery tablet wows us. Leaves us yearning for more info.

An oft rumored Apple tablet has so far failed to materialize. I’m pretty confident Apple is close to releasing one however. Call it a gut feeling. Meanwhile, this whole waiting thing and constantly not knowing can wear down on your nerves. A rather surprising solution has come from a very surprising manufacturer — Nvidia. The tablet pictured above instantly reminds me of some of those CrunchPad renders. Whether or not we’ll ever see that device is still up in the air. This mystery device however was spotted during an interview between Nvidia’s Jen-Hsun Huang and several journalists in Dubai. Was he vacationing, visiting strictly for work (for that gorgeous tablet in particular), or simply there to nerd out on the cool buildings and feel some hot Dubai sand between his toes? I really can’t speculate on that. RIght now the only thing we do know is that Tegra will be the mobile powerhouse between this gadget, whatever it may be — the nameless soldier. Unfortunately for us, Mr. Huang was suffering from a bit of lock-jaw regarding the tablet so absolutely nothing is known about it that we already didn’t know (you know…like one actually existing…) Where do you stand on it?

**Update: Engadget is reporting that this mystery tablet is a “Tegra prototype from an ODM called ICD”. Quell your curiosity?

7″ C-motech “Mangrove” tablet a 1GHz Snapdragon MID

  • October 25, 2009 11:27 am

Living the life as a mobile internet tablet is full of obscurity and not knowing exactly what your purpose in life is. I mean, smartphones are small and powerful, easily able to slip into a pocket. Laptops are small computers that also have copious amounts of power on board (mid-higher end anyway) and are also relatively portable. Tablets and MID on the other hand are sort of stuck in a never ending limbo as they’re way to big to be categorized as a smartphone and often too underpowered and small to be a laptop.

That lifelong ambiguity hasn’t stopped C-montech however as their latest device titled the “Mangrove” is a 7″ behemoth and packs in quite the hardware punch:

  • 7″ Touchscreen display
  • 1GHz Snapdragon processor
  • WiFi/3G/WiMAX

One shortcoming for some (myself included) is the use of Windows Mobile 6.5. Hardly the modern OS I would have chosen. But minor quibbles aside, the physical presence the tablet portrays is enough to leave me transfixed on it’s sleek lines. Would you be interested in such a device? Or is 7″ in that weird size category that as stated earlier is both too small and too big?

CrunchPad to compete with theoretical Apple Tablet?

An interesting war could soon be starting. No it’s not a war of man and military machines, but instead a war between an underdog and seasoned veteran. The underdog, Michael Arrington of TechCrunch teamed up with a Singapore tech startup, Fusion Garage to get his CrunchPad idea into reality. From the beginning, the CrunchPad was to be a $200 touchscreen tablet device that would eschew the typical local storage and focus primarily on the web in both program usage and storage (as the device doesn’t have any local storage) — all programs and data transferred will come from online sources. Another handy feature built in to the CrunchPad is the ability to use the tablet as a 3G modem for other electronics effectively doubling the usefulness of said gadget as it will also help many other gadgets. The ultra low price of $200 doesn’t appear to be sticking however as the Strait Times is reporting that at launch in November the device will ship with a new, larger $400 pricetag. Building you own wonder gadget is never easy. With a new Apple tablet rumored to be released in September, one has to compare the two and wonder who will win. The Apple Tablet will more than likely look better and have some form of OS X on it…whether it’s a modified iPhone OS or modified Leopard OS still remains to be seen. Current rumors foretell of the Apple Tablet coming with an iPhone OS of some sorts, but, it is a rumor so anything is possible. After reading a slew of reviews on each, spending countless hours drooling over pictures and videos, which device do you think you would choose. The sure to be gorgeous mega giant Apple Tablet or the underdog Crunch Tablet?

Complimenting the shots found online last week of the “Pocket Yoga” by Lenovo, an as of yet unannoucned product, more photos have crept their way onto Flickr showing what appears to be a touchscreen “laptop” with an insanely wide screen ratio.  How practical will it be for scrolling vertically for long documents?  Who knows, but it sure does look cool!  Nothing else is currently known about this mystery device from Lenovo.  Come inside for a few more pictures of the Pocket Yoga posing for the camera.
