Twitter close to revealing new layout?

  • April 9, 2010 4:09 pm

Since Twitter’s inception, the main profile page hasn’t really changed. Conversely, other aspects of the popular micro-blogging site like the login page have. On top of physical looks, numerous actual features have been added, with the more recent (and prominent) one being geo-tagging.

A new posting on Dribble by Twitter’s lead designer, Doug Bowman, shows what is a fairly revamped UI — and a nice one at that I will add. It has that typical Mac-like styling I think. You know, the muted colors, matte finish, and rounded, soft on the eyes corners free from harsh jagged edges. I think it looks awesome.

Any official announcements as to a global rollout are no closer to us than Pluto is to being reclassified as a planet. *sigh* Don’t fret. It gives us something to look forward to.

Along with the revamped UI, Twitter is also hard at work upping the feature set. It’s no secret that they are challenging 3rd party Twitter app developers as the founders want Twitter.com to be the defacto standard, doing away with the need for individual desktop clients. Anyway you look at it, a great web portal is universal and carries over to any platform or OS unlike dedicated apps.

Needless to say, the next 12-18 months for Twitter will be some of the most interesting yet for the company and end users alike — 3rd party developers, perhaps not so much.

What are your thoughts on the new direction the styling and the company overall is going?

NBC won’t keep me down: Conan O’Brien joins Twitter, amasses 200k+ followers in mere hours.

  • February 25, 2010 5:24 am

The last 6 months just haven’t been good for NBC have they? First, they completely botched the whole Late Night thing with Leno and Conan. Feeling they hadn’t screwed enough people over enough, they decided to go epic and destroy the Olympics. Well, they surely succeeded there as according to my IP address for the last week, I live in Canada. Hey, you do what you gotta do.

Moving back to Conan, what’s he been doing on his extended vacation? Job interviews and other PR stuff abound I’d assume. Above it all however, he apparently found time to start a Twitter account (twitter.com/ConanOBrien). As of writing, Conan had well over 200K followers — pretty impressive.

With as much outspoken anger and hatred at NBC there was during the the last days of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, it’s no surprise that he’s garnering so much attention on Twitter. What will be interesting to see however is how he plays the Twitter card. Is he merely dabbling in this new fangled social networking stuff that the younger generation is so connected to or is it more of a PR move to gain a social following for any new shows he has coming in the future? Only time will tell. I for one can’t wait to see and hear more of Conan’s jokes on TV again.

Oh yeah, his first Tweet was funny, echoing the same dire circumstances as his last comments on the days leading up to the final Tonight Show:

“Today I interviewed a squirrel in my backyard and then threw to commercial. Somebody help me.”

Hurry back Conan…

The old dog (Commodore VIC-20) and the new trick (Tweeting) all in perfect harmony

  • February 15, 2010 11:12 pm

Whoever says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks obviously hasn’t run into a Commodore VIC-20. While not your typical four-legged, flea ridden mutt, the same basic principal applies. With a downright laughable 5KB of RAM and 1MHz processor, one might think the Commodore VIC-20 in today’s world of 1GHz+ smartphones is nothing more than an ugly looking paper weight. Oh silly, naive reader. Truth be told, you can teach an old dog new tricks.

The magic will be thrown down February 20th on the PC Museum’s Twitter account. Getting to that point however will take a bit of software help by way of “TweetVER” (Tweeting from a Vintage ComputER). Be sure that once the calendar flips over to the 20th of February and when the clock strikes 11(am) you’re situated firmly in front of a screen of some sort impatiently waiting from the Commodore VIC-20′s first tweets to the outside world. It’s truly geek history in the making.

Feelin’ nostalgic are ya?

Taking a 24-hour nap and don’t want to miss sending that important tweet? “LaterBro” ready to pick up the slack.

  • January 29, 2010 8:18 am

Being always connected to the outside world of social networking is a big part of modern society. Some would say it’s destroying us and making us more impatient as the “instant access” to any and all information and messages has people tapping their foot and checking their watch if a reply message takes any more than a few minutes. But alas, life goes on.

Say for example you want to send a particular tweet or Facebook status update timed to a particular event or moment in time but won’t physically be able to do so. In 2009 you were SOL and just had to deal with it. But 2010 is here and with it new innovations and services — services such as LetterBro.

LetterBro takes the guess work out of aligning various ducks for those specially timed tweets and status updates by allowing anyone to schedule said updates at the click of a button. With all of the mental processing power of having to constantly organize your digital thoughts now turned over to some server in a remote land, you’re free to enjoy the other spoils of life. And of course, “LaterBro” is a pretty catch name is it not?

Give it a shot and let us know how it works for you!

Printing all of Twitter on paper would consist of 104,860,000,000 words spread across 350,000,000 pages. Woah!

  • January 19, 2010 10:57 pm

Every once in a while it’s nice to take a breather, sit back, relax and take in the more nerdy, completely useless though interesting facts of life. You’ve probably seen various articles, pictures, and posters comparing various amounts of incredibleness. For tonights super high number of awesomeness, we’re going to look at Twitter.

Seeing as how millions of people around the world use Twitter, it’s incredibly easy to assume that the numbers associated with Twitter — any numbers — are going to be pretty damn high. And astronomic they are.
If Twitter were printed in it’s entirety on paper…

  • Using an average HP Inkjet printer, it would cost you $24,500,000 to print in black ink or $55,606,250 to include the Twitter blue.
  • The total weight of the paper would weigh in at three and a half million pounds — the equivalent of 82 school buses fully loaded.
  • Seven billion tweets to date consist of 104,860,000,000 words. That translates to roughly 133,000 copies of the the King James version of the Bible

…..and so on. Give the pics below a read. It’s pretty intriguing for this late at night. Sorry.

Twoddler gives your baby a voice. Tweets his playtime habits with ease.

twoddler

Interested in genealogy and observing how traits and characteristics are passed down from generation to generation? Things such as build, eye color, skin tone, etc. are the most obvious shared traits. As the world becomes increasingly digital however, we should start noticing within the next couple of decades “digital traits” passed along. Not sure what I mean? A perfect example of “building” such traits into your children and starting your kids young so that they’re technologically fluent by the time they are potty trained can be seen in the “Twoddler”. No it’s not some invented age category to make children in between younger ages feel better about themselves. Instead, it is a unique social networking toy for toddlers and younger children.

Operation is simple being, a device targeted for those of an age who can’t read and have the attention span of the dogs in Pixar’s “Up” (Squirrel!), I would hope that using it wouldn’t cause toddlers to pull out what little hair they have. When your toddler pushes the various buttons and plays with the multitude of turney things and noise makers, Arduino sensors on board capture the data and transmit it wirelessly (via ZiggBee)to a computer which does all of the heavy lifting. The data from the toy is then turned into random yet tactful tweets that mom and dad can follow. To give you a taste, a couple examples of the tweets the Twoddler can send — when say, pressing a picture of mom — include:

  • @mommy_bobby Bobby misses mommy and looks forward playing with her this evening
  • @mommy_bobby Bobby is having a temper tantrum and wants mommy home now.

Is the whole concept and idea corny? Eh, a little. But at the same time I’m left thinking: “Where was the twoddler when I was a kid?” It’s a cool device that should at least keep baby entertained for months and mom and dad for at least a few days — after which the constant @mom’s will drive you insane. Still, you have to appreciate the attempt at reaching an untapped market. What other geeky gadgets do you think would benefit those under 5?

  • September 17, 2009 6:44 am

For all of the die hard, Tweet-aholics out there, you’ve come across an intersection in space and time where you’ve wanted to contact another Twitter user…by phone. Of course you could get the person’s number and then call them like normal. Or, you can simply start your tweet with @call. Direct calling from Twitter here we go. A web based company called JAJAH has just released a beta program called JAJAH@call which allows the beta users to call each other through Twitter. I know what you’re thinking: “Great, another internet calling type of deal”. Except this one has a fairly good catch. It’s completely and 100% free.

Tweet-Tweet comes to Now-enabled Verizon phones

  • September 10, 2009 9:18 am

tweet-tweet
Even though smartphones and other devices consumer most of my time and interest, there are many people out there who don’t like all of that high tech stuff. Instead, simple features are enough to get them through her day. Said users may want an easy and efficient way to use Twitter on their Now-enabled Verizon handsets. Today is your day. Introducing Tweet-Tweet, a Now device Twitter client. The list of features includes: posting tweets, RT, DM, and the ability to follow all from within the app. You may discount Tweet-Tweet as rather light on features, but remember, this isn’t a TouchPro 2 Twitter app we’re talking about here.

The only downfall I can see right from the start will be the cost — $1.49/month or $3.99/”unlimited”. Now, whether unlimited is for unmetered unfettered access or simply a yearly subscription is unknown. I’m awaiting reply from Verizon so we’ll see how that one goes. Although, having to pay for using the app on a per month basis when you already pay for texts doesn’t make sense. One of those “hidden” double charges I guess. Moving on, As far as getting Tweet-Tweet on your phone, you can either send “Tweet” to APPS (2777), or “Download This/Community and Sharing” sections of GIN/Media Center. Who’s ready to tweet up a storm?

Twitter to get more litigious?

  • July 1, 2009 8:33 am

Twitter like it or not has exploaded in the last year. Celebrity usage as well as what seems like daily media attention has helped propel Twitter into the mainstream. With that fame comes many people who want to be able to access said accounds and converse with said users. Since using the name Twitter in Twitter apps is heavily frowned upon, Tweet was the next best option. Just take a look at some of the mroe popular Twitter apps: TweetDeck, TweetMeme, and Tweetie just to name a few. Tech Crunch was lucky enough to get a look inside Twitter HQ thanks to a forwarded email. The message has some potential scary implications.
