One small feature (if you could call it that) introduced with iPhone 4 and iOS 4 was user changeable backgrounds on the main icon screen. Obviously, solid colors or simple background work best. While I’ve understandably seen some truly atrocious user-created attempts at design, this Pac-man wallpaper is easily one of the geekiest and coolest wallpapers for any iPhone 4/iOS 4 user. What do you guys and gals think?
How about some lighter reading to start the hellish of all days, Monday? The image you see on the right shows one unique bathroom decor choice originating from the Ace Hotel in Portland, Oregon. It’s pretty neat stuff. Just think of the nerdy fun someone such as myself would have if a pocketable reader could be rubbed along the wall to rehash all of the old-time piano goodness. Such a device doesn’t exist in exactly the right form however, so we’ll have to make do with oooing and aaaahing.

Well that was fast. (Where have I heard that before…?) If you’ve been taking in all of the non-stop Nexus One info, text, images, and video the last day or so and feeling pretty bummed even with your current Android companion, I’ve got something that should breathe a tad bit of fresh air into your aging friend.
The Android 2.1 ROM that comes stock on the Nexus One has been cracked wide open tonight. While not exactly in the proper form to actually port to any other devices quite yet, all of the goods contained within are ripe for the taking. Ringtones, wallpapers, boot up animations, and pretty much any other multimedia related aspect of Android 2.1 (Flan) can now be yours. As always, XDA is the source of the open source sharing goodness. Best start your downloads now folks.
With the speed at which the multimedia goods have been acquired, I’d give the actual OS another day or two of holding out before it too is breached and replicated for the rest of the civilized world. Android how I love thee…
**Update: Spolier alert — nothing too exciting so far in the way of wallpapers and ringtones. There is a few new gems but otherwise it’s rather standard affair. Now a full 2.1 port to my Droid is another thing…
**Update 2: Engadget is reporting that Android 2.1 has in fact been ported to the Droid. The deed actually was reported on last night shortly after I predicted above that it wouldn’t take much longer and after the fact that I had just laid my head down for a few hours of R&R. One thing must be stressed however — it isn’t a full, complete ROM yet meaning it’s best to hold off until an actual ROM is set loose. Again, as mentioned above, give it a couple days folks.

App World may be higher priced and not have as many apps as other mobile app stores, but one key feature that can truly set them apart from other app stores currently open. Themes. That’s right. Many CrackBerry users find themes a great way to keep their device always feeling fresh and “like new”. Besides, who wants to stare at the same layout, wallpaper, and icons all the time? I surely don’t. While iPhone users have a snowball’s chance in hell from getting official Apple sponsored themes (Cydia we love thee), and Android Marketplace still ignoring the whole theming scene, RIM can actually be first with something pretty big in the mobile app market. I’m really excited to see how they execute this grand plan as BlakcBerry themes are quite a lucrative business. Since this is a rumor, that Novermber 9th date could very well slip. Though sources of BlackBerry Cool say it’s at the very least a firm target they’re gunning for. While themes should have been included in App World from the beginning, it’s comforting to see RIM really trying everything to grasp this whole consumer market thing.

DNA artwork is nothing new. Since DNA has been readily accessible to mere mortals, people have used it as a source of income. Whatever you can possibly think of can now have your DNA slapped on it giving it ultra personal flair. If you happen to long for a digitized form, specifically a DNA iPhone wallpaper, a French based company, Helys, has just the thing for you. Their custom DNA iPhone wallpapers are quite the sight even giving you, the end user a few customization options such as color choice.
Interested users can proceed to Helys’s site to choose your color of choice. Afterwards you’ll need to pick up a mouth swabbing kit in order to get your amoebas across the pond. Then comes the fun part — waiting. After 2-4 weeks, you’ll receive an email from Helys with a high quality 100 dpi image of your inner chemistry ready to be ‘splayed the device of your choosing. With all of this high techery, price no doubt is a question pinging your mind. Well, I hope you like soup, hell, that’s a bit giving, bread and water, as that’s all you’ll be able to afford. Ya, sadness is beginning to fill your soul…I know. The damage — $146 — yeeeooowwch. All for a wallpaper no less. How deep are your pockets?

The geeks of this world who love change, design, and eye candy and also happen to be users of Gmail will be pleasantly pleased to know that a few new themes have popped up in the themes section: Orcas Island, Turf, and High Score. Obviously, the blatant Nintendo look-alike isn’t called “Nintendo” because of various copyright lawsuits that would result almost immediately. If you’re a retro gamer or dig the look, have at it. Though be warned, the retro look does make reading anything pretty difficult at times. It’s not exactly a theme that you’re going to want to use if you’re worried about readability. Moving on, Orcas Island is your typical ocean front theme while Turf is a grass lovers dream. Lots of green green green. The latter two don’t have the pizazz or uniqueness of High Score And yes…it’s a slow morning. Why else would I crawl the settings tabs of web services…..

If you’ve been in the BlackBerry scene for at least a few months and are in to the whole customization of your precious little Crack gadget, chances are you’ve changed the wallpaper and/or theme at least a couple times. Some can go weeks with the one theme. Others change themes like they *hopefully* change underwear. Whichever type of person you are, Hedone Design has just released another amazingly polished and professional looking BlackBerry theme dubbed “Digital”.
Featuring a sort of HTC TouchFLO-ish style, Digital brings crisp and modern lines to the mobile workhorse. What makes this theme even better however is the fact that Hedone has 8 stylish wallpapers available for free download in the store that alter the theme and give it a different appearance — almost like a different theme with each wallpaper. After giving the theme a quick rundown for the last few minutes, I can honestly say this is one of my favorite themes from any designer so far. With the quality, fit and finish, and overall simplistic yet functional design of this theme, I highly and enthusiastically recommend the Digital theme to any BlackBerry user. Such eye candy is well worth the $6.99 asking price.
For your convenience, inside is a gallery of the 9000 version of Digital in action. Come inside and take a peek…

Dime-a-dozen BlackBerry themes are all too common these days. While I don’t want to come across as too blunt or cynical, truly unique and professional looking themes take time and skill. Some people are simply better and design than others. EThemes, a BlackBerry theme website and store has put together some truly amazing BlackBerry themes. However, their latest HTC Hero Theme for the Bold, 8900, and 9630 is the best yet. The only drawback I could find is that the icons aren’t fully user customizable, an unfortunate circumstance though grudgingly forgivable given the top notch design.
I completely support paying creative designers their dues when needed as good work costs money. But when a themer goes the extra mile and gives us one of their prized creations from time to time, well, I can’t argue with that. That’s right, this professional and top quality theme is 100% free. Start downloadin’ folks!
