For the true geeks at heart, another Binary Watch.

  • July 7, 2010 6:58 am

Nothing is as pure and simple geek as a binary clock. There’s all kinds of other gadgets, gizmos, and contraptions that show off your less popular side, but nothing is as timeless as time itself. That’s exactly why you need a binary watch. But even then, tons of people have binary watches and clocks, though some may haven’t the slightest clue how to actually read them. Now you can one-up them with this binary watch.

“The One” binary watch is a normal clock and binary clock morphed into one, with a single sliding door-like plate hiding either side of the clock face. A stealthy geek you can be! But what’s even more intriguing is the “geek in training” feature — the binary face has the numbers printed next to each dot, making it easier than ever for beginners to tell binary time by a simple glance.

There isn’t a price or available purchase date yet, but be sure to keep checking ThumbsUpUK frequently if things such as this interest you.

When old meets new…again: The OLED Steampunk Watch

  • June 14, 2010 7:07 am

You know how it is — blending the old with the new. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. In the case of this Steampunk-ified time keeper complete with OLED display, I’d say yes, it did work quite well.

With a 128 x 128 display, temperature gauge, and range finder, not only is this a timeless accessory, it’s an actual usable piece of gadgetry as well. Don’t ya love it when you can actually use that stylish tech?

For when a simple car key just won’t do: The Aston Marton Watch Key thing

  • February 25, 2010 2:19 pm

$34k burning a hole in your pocket? Ya, thought not. For some however, that lump of cash can cause quite a bit of pain after a little while. Poor them. After dropping $200k+ on an Aston Martin Raptide (the greatest car on the planet I might add), that spare $34k could be seen not only as a pocket weight, but a burden as well. Luckily, the wealthy never have a shortage of options.

If you are one person lucky enough to own one of the finer vehicles on this planet, perhaps it’s time to consider upgrading — your key. Sure Aston Martin as well as countless other luxury car manufacturers turn out some pretty impressive sliced metal, but truth of the matter is — you need more. That’s precisely where the Car Watch Key comes in handy.

The AMVOX2 Rapide Transponder heralds the second generation of the revolutionary creation that sealed the ties between the Grande Maison from the Vallée de Joux and the legendary British luxury sports car manufacturer.

Released several months ago, it is the first mechanical watch developed with the ability to control access into a luxury sports car by means of a built-in micro transmitter system serves to lock and unlock the Aston Martin DBS car, while maintaining the key functions of the famous vertical-trigger mechanism equipping the pushpiece-free chronograph.

This nifty piece of gadgetry will unlock your Aston Martin thanks to a built in transceiver in the watch itself. An added bonus of course being that lump of cash in your pocket is no more. Sign me up. Now if only I could find a spare $34k and a neglected Aston Martin Rapide. Anyone willing to donate…?

As much as I joke and as simple of tech as this is, it’s still might cool. I want it.

Followup: Iron Samurai Watch now up for sale — $15

  • December 9, 2009 2:08 pm

iron-samurai

We originally looked at the Iron Samurai several months back when a price was still nothing but a mere dream. Try as I might, I can’t find that post anywhere to link back to. Believe me, I tried — really hard. But we really don’t need to go drumming up the past now do we. No. Instead, all we really wanted to know then was the price which now happens to be $15 from ChinaVision. I’m both excited and disappointed. Excited because it’s not $1k plus dollars that I though such a novelty watch would be. I’m also disappointed because it’s only $15. Highlighting the supposed metal construction and uber cool lighting effect all falling in under one (deceased though forever captured in paper) Andrew Jackson. Generally if something seems too good to be true — and this case too good of a deal — then it usually is. I was hoping for so much more. With my luck I’d go hog wild and order 5 of these things only to open the box upon arriving and realizing they’re spray painted plastic. Wonderful.

If you happen to find yourself perched atop a mental fence, reading the explanation on the product page (embedded below) is unlikely to sway you as the hyperbole laden collection of words is laughable at best.

Yes, The Iron Samurai has been known to increase its wearers’ strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma by as much as 20 points each! Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal are said to be Iron Samurai owners, as is David Bowie and Brian Eno. In reality, this watch is perfect for Presidential dinner crashers, Facebook celebs with over 1000 fans, Youtube directors with over 2,000,000 views, anyone who can play the entirety of Neil Zaza’s I’m Alright on electric guitar, iPhone 3Gs owners, or anybody who is a somebody.

Someone’s trying just a little too hard wouldn’t you say? Now as a stocking stuffer it wouldn’t be so bad. I’m sure many nerds in training (read: the kiddies) wouldn’t mind the cheaper build quality. All they’re going to care about is the glowing red lights. Ready to purchase?

Blackberry Watch “inPulse” prototype image leaked. Palm Foleo unavailable for comment…[Update]

  • October 19, 2009 1:37 pm

**Update: Many sites around the web have mentioned this BlackBerry watch over the last 24 hours. Some have gone as far claiming that the manufacturers aren’t in any way affiliated with RIM therefore implying they have no worries. However, this company developing the watch for RIM isn’t just an occasional acquaintance mind you. It is a new company that although isn’t owned by RIM, is under close contact and coordination with the Waterloo company. Having such a close relationship and spending so much time getting the two devices to bled in perfect harmony takes time, work, and money — hence the Foleo references. Continue on…

Ok. So they’re not real images. But, what they highlight is that a “BlackBerry Watch” is coming. I’m still warming up to the idea. The gadget pictured above has is currently going by several names — “Berry Watch”, “BlackBerry Watch”, “smartwatch”, and information contained in the images sent to CrackBerry, “inPulse”.

I personally don’t really like watches. So even a gadget that straps to my arm and allows me to do 65-75% of what my BlackBerry already allows me to do isn’t exactly earth shattering. Still, there are many times in life when a quick glance or subtle/sneeky peek at some messages without having to whip out the full sized berry are might helpful. It’s weird. I’m at a sort of stalemate. The initial reaction is: “Holly hell, a real BlackBerry watch phone!!”. But then I think about the practicality, carrying around two things now instead of just one, as well as the overlapping functions and services leave me just “meh” on this one. Of course, as CrackBerry notes, if this BlackBerry watch is to really become useful, or gain any traction, the API’s need to be released to developers so that 3rd party applications can also communicate with the smartwatch/inPulse,BlackBerry Watch. Via CrackBerry:

  • it has been designed specifically for BlackBerry from the ground up – developed by a new BlackBerry-dedicated accessory company
  • it features an OLED screen that we hear is “big, bright and beautiful” and optimized for displaying text clearly, and thanks to OLED has solid battery life
  • it’s designed to show you notifications and previews of messages arriving on your BlackBerry
  • judging by the filename of the photos as they were sent in to us, we’re thinking it’s going to branded the inPulse smartwatch

Furthermore, another quote pulled from CrackBerry: “….The intent of the watch isn’t to replace using your BlackBerry to view messages. Rather, it’s for those occassions when your BlackBerry is tucked away”…..

What the hell do I want to carry around another gadget for that is dependent on the first one I already bought to consolidate? RIM is obviously spending a truck load of cash on research and development for this “smartwatch”. But for what? No one can replace their Berry with it. This watch is forever stuck to a “mother ship” device. In fact, now that the creative juices are flowing, I am seeing many parallels to the Palm Foleo — a companion device — a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. RIM, for the love of god, don’t create something to buddy up with your current, increasingly outdated products. Instead, use all of that manpower and cash on completely overhauling the BlackBerry both hardware and software. I can think of a great place to start…the BlackBerry OS. Once great and cutting edge is sadly stuck in 2005. Even though RIM is posting impressive sales and doing well financially, better so than most in the market, things could quickly turn south if they put too much emphasis and company resources behind this.

What’s your take? Is this the gadget to give RIM a new breath of fresh air? Or is it a Palm/Foleo copycat disaster in the making?

Measuring Tape Watch attempts to put size on time itself…

  • September 29, 2009 11:21 am

measuring-tape-watch

While we have covered several different types of watches and clocks, with a few of those being rather simple to read, are a far cry from this latest freak show. The Measuring Tape Watch will force your eyes to do a full gymnastic routine just to get the current time. Hey, I’m not complaining as I’m up for a challenge at any time and this watch is cool as all get out. In case you were wondering, the big vertical line that is most prominent displays minutes with hours and seconds trailing underneath. It’s not svelte by any means either. Though, fashion isn’t meant to be functional now is it?

The Peek Clock: Tell time like a geek.

  • September 8, 2009 6:05 am

peek-clock

Now I’m not really sure if geeks and gadget nerds have some weird fascination with time and clocks, but the sheer amount of clocks I see geared towards us more technically inclined few sure has me wondering. Moving on, the Peek Clock as it is so cleverly called gives time seekers a glance into the realm of time as the numbers “fade” in and out of existence. Looking at the picture above, one can see how minutes are also taken care of — a simple white dot that travels around the face of the clock gives you a precise position as to what two digits make up the rear end of time. This chic time teller will cost you slightly more than your average clock however. If the $74 price is right, stop on by Chiasso and claim your prize.

James Bond Watch Phone coming later this year courtesy of LG

  • January 7, 2009 12:31 pm

lg-3g-watch-phone-3

I am a big James Bond fan.  I don’t know if its the overall movies that I like more or just all of the cool gadgets that he has received in the past.  LG is bringing James Bonds’ fictional watch phone to the public market with the GD910.  Production on said device will begin later in ’09.  Just because the phone is packed into a watch doesn’t mean they skimped on features.  Below is a quick list.

  • HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps
  • Bluetooth
  • Speakerphone
  • Video Calling
  • Voice Recognition
  • Integrated music player
  • Touchscreen

On top of the touchscreen functionality, there will be physical side buttons to further tweak your secret agent device to you liking.  I want one!  Two more pictures inside!
