We’ve seen plenty of “lifeproof” phones marketed as be-all-end-all rough-n-tough devices. One such phone that comes to mind is the “G-series” of phones on Verizon Wireless. They were quite robust, however they were mere dumb phones. Hardly exciting outside of their rugged image. But Motorola, longtime maker of worksite-specific communications devices piqued our interest when they announced the Defy — an Android powered, no holds barred manly mans phone built to resist dirt, water, and drops like a champ.
The shock and dirt protection are definitelky noteworthy, however, it is the water resistance that is most interesting considering it is a gadget’s worst enemy. With that said, how robust is the Defy when put in contact with its arch nemisis? Let’s just say if you fell in the pool with it in your pocket, there’s no rush to get out. Though, I don’t recommend taking it on your next snorkling trip.
Hop inside to check out a video showing just that — the Defy goes for a swim…
Kyoto, Japan-based “Murata” has a working example of what the next go-to design for speaker technology looks to be — ridiculously skinny speakers. The specific speakers in question are waterproof and a mere 0.9mm thick. It won’t help the rest of your gadget should it slip beneath the unforgiving waves of H20, but at least you can watch your gadget fall to it’s death and listen to it’s death song until the battery takes its last breath.
On a more serious note, I can’t wait to see more hardware components shrink down and get the waterproof treatment. The design possibilities are mouth watering…

Some of us somehow missed out on the common sense bus that passed by each of our hospital rooms at birth. Why it skipped some and made extra long stops at others is unknown. But the fact the matter is, if you’re going to have liquids near a computer, put them on a different plane at least so that you’ll have a few extra seconds to save your precious electronics in the event of a spill. If that seems like to much work or you like to go swimming with your keyboard, fix your gaze above at the “Wetkeys” keyboard.
Besides being immune to the now common coffee/cola spill that claims so many electronic lives, one other benefit of the Wetkeys is the ability to get a thorough washing when the dirt and grime of your greasy digits becomes to much to handle. A simple dunk in water or run it through the dishwasher.
I can see it now: Your friend comes over and see’s you pulling half a dozen keyboards out of the dishwasher and drying them off — all the while an eerie silence permeates the kitchen with either side unable to speak. You with your back turned to him are smirking from ear to ear as your know your friend’s jaw is 3/4 of the way down to the ground.
The convenience and piece of mind won’t come cheap. Prices start at $50 and climb all the way up to $200 smackers. The latter is a tad on the high side for a collection of letters on plastic squares. But again, these are magical waterproof letters. If I were you and had a dad like mine, I’d pick one up for the old man, computers and clumsiness don’t go hand in hand. Lord knows how much longer he can tempt fate before frying the hell out of his keyboard. With Wetkeys, now he doesn’t have to.

Gadget geeks know just how much…or little electronics like water. To these little digital wonders, water is like the finger of God. All powerful with an outcome that is never good. Watching the movie above, it would seem that the guy who drops his iPhone into the pool is the unluckiest guy in the world, dropping his beloved, brand spankin new device into the pool. However, after watching the video, that misfortune turns into extreme lucky as the iPhone is still operational, and even recording video! Alas, someone at the Apple Store must have given him the top secret iPhone 3GS “Atlantis Edition” no? No. In reality, the use of a nice rubber glove was the barrier that kept those malicious little H20 molecules out. So what did we learn? If you live and work anywhere near water with an iPhone, get it rubber glove. It may just save both of your lives.
