Nintendo Confirms: Wii Sucessor Is Real. Coming To E3.

  • April 25, 2011 10:22 am

Previous rumors claiming a much more powerful “Wii 2″ was in the works was confirmed today by Nintendo Co. Ltd. While more powerful hardware is a given, just how powerful wasn’t confirmed. Thus far, rumors have stated PS3 and Xbox 360-beating power.

As far as other features of the Wii sucessor, Nintendo gave us a few clues as to what we probably won’t see — 3D.

“We would like to propose a new approach to home video game consoles with the Wii successor. It’s difficult to make 3-D images a key feature, because 3-D televisions haven’t obtained wide acceptance yet.”

Not only is 3D a niche market, but it’s “fad” nature is still unknown. Will we be as obsessed with 3D in 5 years?

We here at GS are excited to see Nintendo re-enter the high-end gaming market after they took a few seasons off with the Wii. Look for more coverage and information at the upcoming E3 expo, where Nintendo promises to have plenty of next-gen Wii consoles on hand for demo purposes.

Wii 2 Information Leaked. More Powerful Than PS3 And Xbox 360.

  • April 22, 2011 10:46 am

Ever since day 1 of Nintendo Wii sales, we’ve always maintained it was gimmicky and more of a kids toy than a real gaming machine of the modern age. Yeah, motion gaming has it’s fun scenarios. But when you’re looking at block-faced characters on a supposedly “modern” gaming console, the overall experience is lost in our opinion. However, based on freshly leaked reports concerning the upcoming Wii 2 hardware, Nintendo’s next system looks to catapult them back into the fighting ring with the likes of Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 consoles…

Nintendo Announces 34 Million U.S. Wii Sales To Date.

  • January 4, 2011 8:48 am

Mere days before CES is set to get underway, Nintendo is bringing every marketing tactic they have to the table. The gaming giant revealed today that the Nintendo Wii had reached 34 million units sold in the U.S. alone. Of that 34 million share, 21 million sales have come in the last three years signaling that demand is still strong for Nintendo’s seemingly outdated hardware. On that same note, Nintendo also highlighted that it is the third consecutive year of 7 million+ Wii sales.

2011 and beyond will be increasingly difficult for Nintendo. Sony has released their Move attachment for the PS3 and Microsoft has quite the stunner on their hands with the Kinect. Speaking of which, the Kinect itself can boast of many millions of units sold since its release late last year.

The momentum continues for Nintendo however, as the company is set to unveil their new 3DS portable gaming unit this week at CES.

Keep Holding: No New Wii for 2011…or 2012

  • November 15, 2010 6:06 pm

Those holding out on upgrading current gaming consoles for a possible Wii 2 in 2011 won’t like the official news. That is, the news is that there won’t be any news. Nintendo U.S. exec Reggie Fils-Aime cites the Wii’s still excellent sales rate as reason for letting it stick around a while longer. Ok, so 2011 is out. But what about 2012? Not likely. According to Reggie Speculating based on Reggie’s comments, 2013 is the absolute likely the earliest we’ll get any new Nintendo-branded hardware.

On one hand, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. That saying doesn’t work in the gadget world. Unfortunately, gadgets are replaced so quickly that many are old long before their first birthday. On that note, it’s somewhat worrisome for Nintendo to believe the Wii will continue growing as it has. The only reason it did was because it was the only motion-based gaming platform. Now that two vastly superior (graphically speaking) consoles have motion based gaming of their own (which is also arguably better than the Wii’s), Nintendo needs to be thinking about what to do next now…not later.

Of course, Nintendo could be pulling a Sony — Deny everything regardless if everyone already knows the truth or not. But look at the bright side. No new hardware means more money in your pocket.

Angry Birds Coming to Wii, Xbox, and PSN. #angrybirds

  • November 12, 2010 2:28 pm

If you can’t get enough of the Angry Birds game, stuffed toys, or iPhone cases, Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka has something you’ll want to hear. Angry Birds is invading the PSN, Wii, and Xbox platforms. The announcement was made at the first annual Social Gaming Summit in London, England, and foretold of Angry Birds expanding to not only the platforms above, but into many new “forms”. Sounds pretty interesting. And I’ll admit, I’m an Angry Birds junkie. I’ll probably buy anything with the name on it. Yup, even Angry Birds toothpaste made out of…angry birds. (Can’t imagine they’d be too happy to be turned into toothpaste in the first place.)

With that said, Vesterbacka also stated that before we see a proper sequel, the consoles mentioned above would see their own 1st-gen releases. Furthermore, he revealed that there would be a “surprise twist” in upcoming iterations of the uber popular game as well. Unfortunately, that’s where he’s left us all hanging. Time to fill in the blanks yourself.

GoldenEye lives!

  • June 15, 2010 1:39 pm

The Nintendo 3DS — nifty. GoldenEye making a comeback on the Wii — Epic! For someone who is still considered a “young whipper snapper” by many age groups, news of a classic (to me) such as GoldenEye literally has me shaking.

The remake features Daniel Craig as Bond, kicking out the old favorite Pierce Brosnan. That right there may upset some more hardcore Bond loyalists, but I’m more interested in the actual gameplay. The original GoldenEye is hands down one of the best shooter games ever made even when compared to some of today’s bleeding edge games. The video that was shown off at E3 does highlight that the missions in general, while in the same place, look like they’ve been almost totally redone, save for a few classics (read: the infamous Facitly bathroom air vent scene).

Yeah, it’s pretty awesome. Look for GoldenEye to hit shelves this Christmas. Jump inside for the video and get ready to wait in anxiousness.

GoldenEye remake to finally see light of day on Wii and DS this Novemeber?

  • June 4, 2010 2:34 pm

I know I’ve commented on claimed GoldenEye remakes several times over the last few years. But now more than ever, there really is a good chance we could see it GoldenEye reborn.

If you don’t remember, the original publisher of GoldenEye for the Nintendo 64 was Rare. However, they have stated time and time again that they have not, and do hot have any future interests in remaking GoldenEye — but Activision does. Thankfully, they have the almost never ending pockets needed to pay the sky high licensing in which to make it all possible.

You may recall Microsoft has also been trying over the last several year or two to get GoldenEye Classic up on Xbox Live for download. Though plenty of greed, red tape, and rights issues have stood in the way. But fresh reports from EuroGamer are painting a very convincing picture that we could see that hallowed game reappear this November on the Nintendo DS and Wii…

How about some Mario Kart Wii in that above ground pool???

  • May 30, 2010 1:58 am

Yup, you heard that right… CTG has released the biggest and most bad assest(est?) Wii accessory yet… The Wii Go Kart Kart Kart, etc… This most amazingest Wii attachment is probably the coolest thing to ever grace my living room floor, or my pool, or the driveway. This $40 attachment inflates to a beautiful gokart with a WiiRemote slot in the steering wheel for you to play Mario Kart Wii, or any other racing game you might fancy…

CTA Digital, a company that has tons and tons of console accessories, has probably created one of the most amazing / (slash) awesome / (slash) crazy attachments to date… All I know is that I want one of these, and at a $40 price point, I see no reason to not have one just sitting in front of my tv.

The ultimate mobile gaming platform: iPad + Wii controller + SNES ROMS.

  • May 7, 2010 6:29 am

What do you get when you combine the best qualities of the iPad + Wii + retro games? The WiiPadNes! Usually such things as cross platform hackery take a fair bit of knowledge of the underlying code to get it all working somewhat peacefully. But given the mature nature of the iDevice jailbreaking scene, such things come rather easily actually. All you need is a jailbroken iPad and then install some SNES roms. Fire up snes4iphone and you’re good to go.

Snes4iphone’s latest feature allows bluetooth pairing of Wii controllers. One thing leads to another and bam — mobile gaming in the ultimate form. Perhaps I’ll need to re-evaluate an iPad purchase later on down the line.

Slide in after the break to see it in action…
