Google+ Code Spills The Beans. Games And “Questions” Coming To New Social Service.

  • June 30, 2011 2:57 pm

Well, damn. Everything we said about Google+ being better than Facebook for leaving the stupid games/apps portion to Facebook’s cluttered ecosystem were a bit premature. Two unannounced Google+ features — Games and “Questions” — were unearthed today signaling a potential new direction for Google’s infant social network service. Granted, just because something is mentioned in a particular piece of code hardly means anything will turn up anytime soon.

With that said, if all this extra stuff must be added our only request is that Google not make games and apps so damn annoying, obtrusive, and bloated. If they can manage that, Google+ will definitely have even more of a chance in taking on Facebook. It’s one thing to get the tech world addicted to your product. The global population of mainstream users is an entirely different beast.

2+ Months Later: PlayStation Network, Store Still Offline In Japan.

  • June 24, 2011 1:40 pm

Despite the rest of the world regaining Playstation Network and PlayStation Store access as early as May 14th, Sony’s PSN and PlayStation Store customers in Japan remain offline.

The reason is the same as it was a month ago — the Japanese government has demanded that Sony show/prove that specific requirements are being met before they’ll allow the switch to be flipped. Making matters worse is that Sony hasn’t offered up any public explanations as to what the Japanese government’s requirements are, how they’re planning to meet said requirements, or a time frame in which we can look forward to a Japanese re-launch of PSN services.

For what it’s worth, Sony did issue a brief apology today to PSN and Qriocity customers which stated they needed more time “to make adjustments with the various related parties” — the “related parties” of course being various governmental agencies.

Tell us, Japanese PlayStation owners: What have you been doing to pass the time?

Windows Phone 7 Mango Xbox Live Features Detailed [Gallery]

  • June 23, 2011 8:28 pm

Thus far, Microsoft’s official presentations featuring the revamped Games Hub in Windows Phone 7 has been rather uninformative. Seeing as how mobile gaming is exploding and that Xbox Live — hands down the best console gaming environment — is joining the fray, it only makes sense for Microsoft to beef up WP7 in this area.

With that said, the Windows Phone team updated their blog this afternoon with a slew of newly detailed features and images giving us a glimpse of what we have in store for WP7′s upcoming Mango update. The most notable features include: improved Xbox Live messaging, ability to edit XBL profile, integrated achievements w/ comparison views of your friends, improved Spotlight content, fully animated 3D avatars and improved game request notifications.

Is it the full Xbox Experience ported to the mobile world? Not yet. But it’s getting there. Full gallery after the break…

Crytek: Crysis 2 “Entry Level” Approach “Backfired A Bit”. Finally Catering To PC Community With New Update.

  • June 23, 2011 7:56 pm

Makers of popular first person shooter Crysis 2 now say the more “entry-level” approach they took with the sequel backfired. If you recall, Crytek made headlines when it was revealed Crysis 2 would only use Direct X 9 — a technology that is years old — instead of the much new and graphically impressive DirectX 11. To please hardcore PC gamers, Crysis eventually acknowledged a DirectX 11 patch that would bring the much needed graphics boost to those seeking the latest visuals.

While we can understand Crytek’s attempt to appeal to a broader audience as they dipped their toes in the console scene, alienating their most loyal group of gamers was a poor choice in our opinion. At least Crytek is finally making it right.

Look for the free Crysis 2 1.9 update on July 27th.

Crysis 2 DirectX11 Patch Dropping June 27th.

  • June 22, 2011 4:28 pm

For several years Crysis has been a great indicator to overall gaming performance as to this day can push some PCs harder than they capable of going. So when the game developers behind Crysis, Crytek, unveiled Crysis 2 and it’s console port-like DX9 support, many cried fowl. Since Crysis 2′s release many weeks back, the initial fanfare has died down, though the criticisms still remain.

But that will soon change thanks to the often rumored DX11 pack that will bring many new, subtle UI tweaks to the game ultimately making it much, much prettier to look at. Everything from dirt, to shadows, to tessellation will now be enabled.

With that said, the image above is but one example of many compliments of NeoGAF. For the full gallery of GIFs, be sure to hit up NeoGAF’s original post which showcases 6 different environments with DX11 features enabled/disabled.

PS3 Hacker graf_chokolo Likely Headed To Prison.

  • June 22, 2011 7:06 am

It’s pretty much a given that nobody likes Sony. They’re assholes plain and simple. And while the world was transfixed on infamous iOS and PS3 hacker, George Hotz (Geohot), another talented PS3 hacker by the name of graf_chokolo was waging his own war with the media giant. But where Geohot was able to settle and move on, graf_chokolo will have to give in to financial woes and take up residency in prison instead.

In a comment posted on his website, graf_chokolo says:

Hi guys, no money left anymore. Going to jail soon probably because i cannot pay court costs.
But i’m ready to stand up for everything i said and go to jail for that too. It’s not important to win, more important is to show them that we are ready to fight, that they cannot scare me off easily. Yeah, i’m ready to go to jail for my believes and my principles.

Most of people probably think that all computer and kernel hackers are weak kids, hiding in a cellar, eating pizza whole day, writing software and looking for attention Maybe, but that’s NOT me. And i will get out eventually and continue my work. My work means very much to me.

It really is quite a shame that Sony can take people to court and ruin their lives when they’re merely trying to return a much requested feature to the community. Maybe if Sony actually cared about their users and environment as a whole they’d support the hacker community and/or hire them to better the platform. In reality, however, Sony hates you. End of story.

Man To Ship Self Across Country In Box To Study PTSD.

  • June 21, 2011 3:53 pm

How far would you go to study a particular ailment such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)? For most “normal” people it would involve a series of office and hospital visits. But for one Knob, Arkansas native by the name of Jordan Wayne Long, the traditional PTSD study is about to be launched to a new level of cool/crazy by shipping himself across the country locked in a wooden crate…
