12 MP camera….In your phone!

Because single digit megapixel camera phones are so 2007, Sony is upping the ante with a 12.25 Megapixel 8mm CMOS sensor for dedicated camera phones.  Overseas in Europe and Japan camera phones are way ahead of the game with our crappy phones here in the U.S.  They’ve had 5,6,7+ megapixel camera phones for several years now.  We are just catching up.  Meanwhile they’re breaking out the double digit monsters of photography.  This beast of a sensor is also capable of shooting 1080p HD video at 27 fps.  While this “tiny” sensor is large enough to be used solely for dedicated camera phones, Sony is also developing a smaller 5.2 and 8.1 MP sensors for smaller more mainstream camera phones with the ability to still shoot 1080p video but this time at 30fps.

The 12.25 and 5.2 MP sensors become available in March, while the 8.1 MP comes out the doors a tad earlier in February.
