Going above and beyond: Acer releases S243HL LCD featuring 8,000,000:1 contrast ratio

Think your paltry 50,000:1 desktop monitor is hot stuff? Sit down. It ain’t got nothin’ on Acer’s latest beast — the 24-inch S243HL. The marketing pizazz behind this monster is of course that insanely high contrast ratio. Reaching such a number comes by way of a white LED being employed instead of the traditional LED’s that get stuffed in current displays. Physical size is also impressive measuring in at a “where did it go” 0.57 inches.

Honorable mentions include 1080p (1,920 x 1,080) resolution, 2ms response time, dual HDMI inputs, built-in 2W speakers, VGA input for the oldies, and an HDMI-to-DVI adapter included in the box round out the feature set. Currently the S243HL isn’t available in the US, though those looking to snag one can do so via Japan for a cool $360.

nice elegant design monitor. Be aware you might have issues with ATI cards that won’t display the 1920×1080 resolution properly with hdmi. This can be solved by installing the catalyst control center and checking the GPU box under DTV(HDMI)/properties.

What is dissapointing is that the backlight bleeds through on some parts of the screen so black isn’t black everywhere on the whole screen. For gaming and video playback this is no drawback but might be an issue for the photoshop adepts.

The on-screen menus are easy to use and the display itself is really bright and sharp. Text, graphics and just about anything you’d want to display on it will turn out fantastic.
