  • Nokia to shock & awe with Snapdragon powered wonder phone?
    by Mike

Nokia. What do you think of when you hear that world? For me, since my time on earth has so far been relatively short, all I think of is those free phones you get from carriers as they practically throw them at people walking by. Sure it creates huge numbers in both market share and profit categories on those little excel spreadsheets company accountants comb through on a daily basis, but it does nothing for that smaller minority of users who actually use and enjoy their phones. To Geeks, ...
  • WiFi problems appearing on the BlackBerry Storm 2
    by Mike
    Posted October 30th, 2009 at 9:13 am
The BlackBerry Storm 2 is an infant in the public's eye yet reports are already circulating this morning that a rather nasty WiFi bug has made itself known. The issue stems around the device being unable to fully connect to a WiFi network which of course means no data and simultaneous voice for you. Word is that the beef should lie with Verizon, not RIM. Understandable, Verizon is a bit of a newcomer to this found WiFi technology on smartphones.... There is a temporary "fix" though that te...
  • Foo Fighters. Live streamed Concert. Facebook. Tonight.

Last weekend, U2 took a very rare chance to open up to this world of technology that celebrities and the content owners world continue to decry or ignore. It was an awesome experience, a good show, and a perfect display of modern technology at it's finest. Since the interwebs were pretty busy chatting up the event, you could imagine that at least a couple other people heard of it. If U2 wasn't quite your style, or your looking for more live concert streaming goodness, the Foo Fighters have go...
  • No tethering on Sprint smartphones w/ everything plans?
    by Mike
    Posted October 30th, 2009 at 6:50 am
After looking over some spec's for Sprint's 2010 lineup over at BGR, upon arriving at the very last bullet point my train of thought gets stopped dead in it's tracks. It simply states "No tethering for phones that require "Everything Plans". Essentially, that puts the kibosh on all smartphones. Pardon me if I'm over reacting, but a smartphone in supposed to be, plans included. If I'm paying for these falsely advertised "Everything/Unlimited" plans, I better sure...
  • All under one roof: JVC announces the video lovers trifecta — VHS/DVD/Blue-ray
    by Mike
    Posted October 30th, 2009 at 5:49 am
No this isn't some sly Pizza Hut advertisement or reference as JVC's latest player to get announced literally has everything under one roof -- VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray. I stopped watching VHS movies a long, long time ago. Heck, getting spoiled day in and day out with 1080p HD means whenever I do happen to stumble upon a VHS viewing I'm left wanting so much more. But not everyone loves all HD or simply loves those golden oldies that have never made the crossover to digital. For that, VHS is stil...
  • Concept: Waterdrop “Shower Room”
    by Mike
    Posted October 30th, 2009 at 4:57 am
Who hasn't at one point or another wanted to soak in a nice warm tub for multiple hours? For some, they simply don't have the patience to just lay there which is understandable. Given our tech background and ever changing landscape, we want stuff happening all the time and fast fast fast. While I don't think I could spend any more than 30-40 minutes in a normal tub today without getting board out of my mind, if I had the Waterdrop Shower Room in my house and hooked up to an Xbox 360/PS3 you w...
  • Flammable Ice
    by Mike
    Posted October 29th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Ya I know. Ice isn't a gadget. Neither is fire. What about if you combine them? Still a no. You have to admit though, just the sound "flammable ice" is freakin' cool. The Geekery to "flammable ice": Ice is added to a dry Pyrex bowl. When the Ice melts the water reacts with the calcium carbide (place on the bottom) to produce acetylene gas and calcium hydroxide. The acetylene gas then explodes into flames when a match is place on top. It will continue to burn even as the ice melts bec...

BlackBerry Storm users distraught over the OS 5.0 theme problems can breathe a sight of relief tonight. Leave it to the persistent and determined CrackBerry community to find a solution. Some fixes: Via BlackBerry Cool reader Jon: This issue can be resolved, as posted on forums by wiseguy77: “step1: obviously load the theme step2: do not use the ...
  • Early Wii 2 rumors leak. Blu-ray, simultaneous world-wide launch in 2010?
    by Mike
    Posted October 29th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Great jumping Jehoshaphat. HD Wii! Hear that? Oh you missed it? That's because it was the sound of a single, tiny grain of salt hitting the floor. Which signals how you should treat this rumor. According to a "very reliable source" of Logic-Sunrise (Google translated), the 2nd gen Wii, for now cleverly named "Wii 2" will debut in 2010. The main rumored feature that stands out is the Blu-ray support and hardware support for both 720p and 1080p. Sweet. Finally some HD. I know the W...
  • Yup, you guessed it. iTunes 9.0.2 kills Pre sync.

Ben and Jerry was one of my favorite cartoons growing up. For me, it was the whole stereotypical cat vs. mouse thing that always had me hooked. Now that I'm a big boy, (some may dispute that) I still watch cat and mouse drama every day. Except now it isn't a cartoon. It's a bit more "real". Ladies and gents, I introduce to you Apple (cat) and Palm (mouse). The round 'n round battle that these two tech giants this one tech giant, and second, not so giant tech giant (figure it out, it isn...
  • BlackBerry Theme: Waterfall
    by Mike
    Posted October 29th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
It's been a while since I covered some neat BlackBerry themes and since this mornings look at Transitions, I now find myself on a BB theme kick. This time, the theme comes from Bplay and goes by the name "Waterfall". I'll point out that I don't normally cover animated themes as older Berries slow down to a crawl. Heck, even the latest Berries featuring 600+ MHz processors under the hoods often experiene adverse performance issues with animated themes. This theme however just struck me as pl...
