Rock Band: Green Day and future projects to cease after March 31st?

Rock Band and Guitar Hero are the type of game that you either love or hate. There isn’t really a middle ground. Whatever your stance may be, you can’t help but acknowledge the wide ranging success that franchise and supporting platforms have enjoyed. For gamers at the far end of the totem pole, it’s been a fun ride no less. I can’t tell you how many weeks I’ve spent playing Guitar Hero or Rock Band after all of the hours are added up. I’m a junkie for both games, I admit.

It could all be over soon though, and without an encore if all those important people in suits that run Viacom and EA can’t strike a deal to extend the Rock Band license and franchise. Such tales seem impossible. The Rock Band name is huge. How could the parties involved simply half ass any attempts to negotiate another contract? Money does the weirdest and most disappointing things to people.

For now, the only Rock Band game still looking for release is Rock Band: Green Day. That game looks like it’ll meet a release date in the near future. Any future titles however are on hold as EA isn’t going to invest company resources making these games if they lose the license. It makes sense.

One thing I’d like to wager — how about EA stops milking the cash cow with subpar “themed” Rock Band games such as “Beatles” and “Green Day” and instead goes back to the normal version that incorporate a multitude of bands. After a few songs by the same artist I’m ready for something different. But again, I’m one person.

What do you think: more themed Rock Bands or back to the old style?

I’m a huge fan of Green Day so I’m of course going to be someone who would purchase the game. But I do agree with the fact that they’re catering to a much smaller audience. I’m only 15 so I really wouldn’t be the consumer anyways, but I don’t know. Green Day’s a big band. We’ll see what happens.
