Sony to unveil “real” Xbox Live contender: “PSN+”?

  • May 26, 2010 10:18 am

Are you a social gamer or one who cares more for eye candy and being locked away in a dark, somewhat smelly bedroom for hours on end? If you’re the former, Xbox Live is pretty much your only choice. The integration with the console and the ease at which games can be played across continents to the simplicity of buying and downloading new games is second to none.

But if you’re the latter, Sony’s PSN is more your flavor. I mean, how can you beat free? Sony realizing their PSN isn’t quite in the same league as Microsoft’s Xbox Live looks to be trying at it again, with rumors that a highly needed change is coming to the Playstation Network…

The rumors reported by 1up have Sony announcing a new PSN+ network within the next few days to coming weeks. The “+” hopefully denotes a better product and not just an added fee. And yes, there’s a fee — reportedly in the neighborhood of $5-$10 per month. Still, that’s a lot cheaper than Xbox Live’s $50/month…. **You’ve just witnessed a brain fart in action. I wrote /month but was thinking in terms of years. …my bad.

The features of PSN+ are supposedly cross-game voice chat, free play of the first hour of downloadable games, and access to a rotating list of downloadable games. Sounds pretty straight forward and nothing too exciting really. I was hoping that the whole PSN multi-player gaming template would be switched around. But alas, we live on.

The “normal” (read: Free) PSN should remain free to use if the rumors are correct. Judging by Sony’s past however, I wouldn’t put it by them to charge an erroneous fee for slapping a new label on something and changing absolutely nothing. Just saying…it’s happened before.

PSN (and potential PSN) gamers: What do you think? Does PSN+ sound like the holy grail of Playstation 3 goodness you’ve been waiting for or is it another fail on Sony’s part?

Drop your thoughts below…

it’s $50 dollars a year…if you gonna write about something at least be right about it. Just to let you know i don’t even own a xbox and i know that. Now lets do the math…50 divided by 12 = (lets just round it up) 5 bucks a month. So technically its the same crap. Now, PSN is pretty bad (i own a PS3) i would say if they create the psn+ i would give it a good year until you start to see some good results. Lets face it, sony always fails at the first attempt of making something better.

Ya…about that. I wrote month, but meant year. My bad. In that case, it’s no better by the looks of it.

Well if all the additions are going to be correct, it seems that it has way more stuff than xbox live gives you for the 5 dollars a month. So it may not be a complete fail especially if regular online gaming continues to stay free.

I don’t know. Cross-platform voice chat is kind of cool and if the rotating downloadable games are some type of freebie — than ya.

My feeling though is that even a bunch of free stuff won’t replace a cumbersome multi-player environment.

pretty sure its 50-60 dollars a year for xbox live, so it would be more expensive than xbox if it was being sold at $10 per month

    • Mike

Ya. I wrote per month but was thinking in terms of years. Noted in post.
