Nvidia Releasing GTX 570 Before Christmas? Similar to or Faster than Current GTX 480! #nvidia

Until the GTX 580 was released, the GTX 460 was the best bang-for-your-buck card — especially true if you picked up a second and ran them in SLI. Though truth be told, even with the GTX 580 now out in the wild, “bang-for-your-buck” is probably a poor choice of words to describe it. For starters, it’s not cheap. But if you can look past that, the possibilities are far more forward thinking than a GTX 460. However, there may be something more worth your while in the near future.

It’s no secret that the original launch of Nvidia’s Fermi was hot, but it was for all the wrong reasons. Performance was merely “meh” while heat and power consumption were through the roof. Early reviews of the revised GF110-based GTX 580 are speaking favorably of the cooler running, more power conscious beast. Fudzilla is reporting that Nvidia could be releasing the GTX 470′s successor — the GTX 570 — as soon as within “a few weeks”.

The big changes over the GTX 470 include an extra unlocked shader core, bringing the total to 480 shaders — or, the same as the current GTX 480. Performance will supposedly be on par with or better than the current GTX 480, yet run cooler thanks to the new Vapor Cooling design and a re-designed PCB.

Those hoping for a GTX 460 replacement will have to wait until 2011, however. GTX 460 sales are still doing well, and as such, Nvidia doesn’t want to cannibalize GTX 460 sales by releasing its successor too early. (The GTX 460 launched this past summer.) Though it isn’t hard to imagine the GTX 560 getting an extra shader core (or two) as well as an even more efficient design.

My oh my, the GPU wars are shaping up mighty nicely. Have you casted your vote yet?
