Eric Schmidt: We Just Renewed Google Maps Location Data With Apple.

Over the last couple of years Apple has acquired a couple of companies (Placebase and Poly9) dealing specifically with location-based data leading many to believe Apple was preparing to replace Google Maps from iOS. In the more recent location tracking (non) story, it was revealed that Apple was gathering a massive amount of user location data in an effort to build a more robust mapping service with improved times that factored in traffic.

But any such rumors claiming that Google was on the way out got a swift kick by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt today at the AllThingsD conference. When questioned by Walter Mossberg and Kara Swisher about the possibility of Google-sourced map data being replaced, Schmidt replied:

I hope not, we just renewed with them.

While CEO’s (let alone ex-CEOs) aren’t always on top of their company’s own products and services, Schmidt always played a more active role in day to day operations and projects at Google. With that said, we can take his admission as fairly concrete evidence that Apple won’t be replacing Google Maps in the near-term. Maybe in iOS 6…
