[Update] Continued: Xbox Live Hack.

  • July 8, 2011 6:23 am

Yesterday we highlighted a particular account by GamerTell writer PJ Hruschak and his apparent Xbox Live account getting hacked. Given the seemingly weekly announcements of more websites and services falling to hackers, hearing of a massive network like Xbox Live beginning to have user accounts compromised is certainly alarming. One can’t ever be “too” careful with online account information and data.

We sent out an email to Microsoft asking for any confirmation/details, though the quick response was unsurprising. Microsoft denied anything was wrong andreiterated their commitment to security.

While we don’t feel Microsoft or Xbox Live has suffered a major data breech of any kind, another tip sent in to us last night shares very similar traits to PJ’s story linked above signaling a potential growing issue…

The latest tip comes from a reader who had his Xbox Live account hacked in the same fashion as PJ from GamerTell — Xbox Live points were purchased. Except in this case the particular user was dinged for for both 4,000 ($49.99) and 6,000 ($74.99) points bundles. On top of that, the users’ XBL account was transferred from the U.S. to Brazil.

Now is this a signal of a larger scale intrusion into Xbox Live? We don’t think so. Phishing attacks are a common, routine way for hackers to gain a small number of user credentials. With that said, we do think that a small percentage of XBL accounts have been compromised after LulzSec’s “Final Release” in which countless services and companies had private information leaked. Is this one of those cases? Hard to say without hearing of more incidents, however.

Whatever the case may be, we highly encourage XBL users to change their passwords. It’s the first and most overlooked step in combating cyber theft of personal information.

We encourage anyone experiencing similar XBL account problems to contact us at tips[at]gadgetsteria[dot]com.

Update

Since the original article and this article were posted, we’ve received several more accounts from people claiming their accounts were hacked with similar results — 4,000-6,000 Microsoft Points were fraudulently purchased and used. Add to that a hotmail account or two and it really makes you wonder if Lulz is still raging havoc on Microsoft/Xbox Live users even after they sailed into the sunset…

I got hacked the same way with 4000 purchase and 6000 purchase and then transferred to an email [email protected]. this is BS!!!

I also got hacked for 4000 and 6000 points. I called MS and they would not issue a refund but told me to dispute the charge with my credit card company. Did that — but visa contacted MS which found “no evidence of fraud”. So I’m out the money and the points on my system before it was hacked. And I had to get a new credit card number because I disputed the charge. And my credit score has probably been dinged.

Same thing happened to me tonight. luckily they didnt change my pass or email address so i got emailed when the purchases were made. the games that were purchased didnt have a chance to download before i recovered my gamertag back… got an automatic refund from the fraud dept from the 6,000 points charge but the 4,000 they said they will refund me when the investigation is complete. i dont know why they cant refund me now, if their auto fraud detector knew the 2nd one was fraud why are they stalling on the first one a few min prior? grrr. at least i still have my account in tact.

Happened to me just two days ago. Currently have an open investigation onto my account but it was an 80$ and 50$ point purchase; just like everyone else..
