Cross-Platform PingMe A Legitimate BBM/Kik Competitor?

Both dedicated and cross-platform chat apps are a dime a dozen these days. A few notable contenders such as Kik, WhatsApp and LiveProfile stand out amongst the rest. Though ultimately each app varies little from one to another with the biggest difference lying in the user interface. To us, Kik is the best looking cross-platform chat app. The only problem is that it isn’t quite as useful without BlackBerry support. Too bad RIM had to can support for it.

But if you’re open to the idea of another cross-platform chat app, we think you’ll like PingMe…

For starters PingMe is already available for Android and iOS and has Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry versions in the works. One of the most important feature of chat apps in 2011, Push Notifications, are supported right out of the gate. Location is another big talking point of PingMe. Using said feature allows friends to quickly find you based on messages sent with location tags. Worry not — location laced messages can be toggled on and off. Finally, customization options regarding chat background/wallpaper, bubble color, avatar picture and more can be tweaked giving users a more custom, personal app should they want to.

But what’s most intriguing about PingMe is that it doesn’t require the setup of another username/account — it’s tied to your phone number. After giving PingMe your phone number for the first time, a confirmation text is sent to your device. From there you only need fill out a couple basic lines of information and you’re ready to go.

As mentioned above, PingMe is already available in the iOS App Store (Download Link) and Android Market (Download Link) free of charge with follow-up WP7 and BlackBerry apps due to launch in the not too distant future.
