Review: SteelSeries Diablo III Gaming Mouse And Headset.

Diablo 3 Headset

Based off of the popular Siberia V2 headset, the Diablo-themed headset is just as good and then some. Specifically, the design and attention to detail is taken to an even higher level with even the box and included reading material/accessories sporting the Diablo III color scheme. But, fancy colors and even unique physical features aren’t what really matters here. Sound quality and performance are. As gaming headphones, how do they fare?

Up until maybe 8-10 months ago, we weren’t all that taken by gaming headsets. Quite honestly, we’d rather have used a higher end pair of normal headphones. But after trying out a couple pairs, we’ll admit that we’re hooked. Continuing our headset journey today comes by way of SteelSeries’ Diablo III-themed headset to coincide with the new Diablo III launch this year.

If you’ve never used a gaming headset before (or have always made do with “normal” headphones), you’ll notice that the gaming headsets in general are big. And for good reason. The Diablo III headset in particular packs massive 50mm drivers capable of blasting your ear drums with in-game audio.

Headphones Specs:

  • Frequency response: 10 – 28,000 Hz
  • Driver: 50mm
  • Cable length: 1.0 m
  • USB extension length: 2.0 m
  • Jack: Gold Plated USB

Microphone Specs:

  • Active Noise Reduction: up to 20 dB
  • Frequency response: 50 – 16,000 Hz
  • Pick up: Uni-directional
  • Sensitivity: -38 dB

One of the things we first noticed when putting the headset onto our melon was how light it felt. The large 50mm drivers and seemingly heavy looking plastic would lead one to believe that neck cramps would creep up after a short gaming session. Not so in our gaming sessions. In fact, we never felt any discomfort from wearing the Diablo III gaming headset.

Another thing we really like about the Diablo III headset (and wish it were more of a standard than exception) is the braided cable. Said cables are simply nicer looking and more manageable than their plastic/rubber coated counterparts. Kudos to SteelSeries for not being cheap and giving us a product that not only performs, but looks good while doing it.

Being a gaming headset, yakking at competitors/friends is a given. Though, microphones built into headsets have always been a love/hate for us. So many times a poor physical design can translate to poor audio performance or simply a constant annoyance when in game. Even more-so, using a gaming headset when the microphone is not needed is sometimes a test of patience and nerves as that magical sonic wand dances in your face. With the SteelSeries Diablo III headset, the microphone is both easily molded into the shape/position of your likening as well as 100% able to be hidden, tucked away within the left headphone cup.

Considering that the Diablo III headset is a simple stereo headset, certain in-game audio (and of course) video pumped through the 50mm drivers wasn’t as expansive as we would have hoped. Obviously, going from a multi-channel source to a stereo one means some sonic qualities will be lost. Still, at no point did we ever feel like we were missing too much of our game/movie. In fact, we’d say the overall depth of sound was actually more broad (highs where higher and lows, deeper) than our other in-house review headset, the Roccat Kave (look for that review soon). Surround sound issues aside, the 50mm drivers handedly deliver plenty of upper, mid and low-range frequencies. Everything from the whispers of bullets whizzing by to thunderous booms of tanks blasting in the distance can be heard, and to a certain degree, felt.

$149.99 is a tad steep in our book for stereo headphones. Then again, we’re sure the special Diable III branding plays into the price tag a bit. For those not interested in Diablo III, we’d say forgo the special edition makeup and pick up SteelSeries’ fantastic Siberia V2. It’s ~$30-$40 cheaper. And, seeing as how it’s the base for the Diablo III headset, spec-for-spec identical. Audio quality is top notch, though, movie buffs and gamers looking for that surround sound in your head experience, however, will want to look elsewhere. Finally, the slick design and unique microphone make for a very attractive overall product that Diablo III fans will definitely want to add to their arsenal.
