iPhone 3GS camera outdated last year?

While there were many things announced yesterday at WWDC, several of those pertaining to the new iPhone 3GS, one in particular left me wanting more - the camera. The old iPhone 2G and 3G cameras were 2 megapixel shooters with nothing else to aid in mobile static image gathering. The new iPhone 3GS uses a *slightly* higher resolution 3 megapixel camera, except this time auto-focus, auto-white balance, and a few other small software tweaked features are also added. As soon as I saw the camera I thought to myself “That’s it?”. Do you find yourself asking the same question?

“World’s Smallest” HD camera innards brought to you by Sony

For all of the mobile Hi-Def photographers/video nuts, Sony’s latest attemp at miniturization is paying off as the specs for the “World’s Smallest” camera module are pretty amazing. The new MCB1172 HD camera module developed and created by Sony is smaller than a quarter yet has enough muscle packed inside to capture 8.3 megapixel stills, shoot 720p video at 30fps featuring image stabilization, face detection, and even high-ISO support. The coolest part is that if you just so happen to feel like you want to recreate your own matrix scenes, Sony’s latest wonder chip has got you covered as it will start flipping through frames at an brisk 120fps ensuring you get all of the slow molassesy motion your crave. With as fast as technology and the gadget world reinvents itself, it shouldn’t be too long before we see this little beast showing up in our phones.

Better, software enhanced pictures coming to iPhone OS 3.0?

If the iPhone’s measley 2 megapixel camera just isn’t doing it for you and your fed up with the blurry, overexposed crap called a picture that Apple’s jesus phone currently puts out, you may have something to look forward to in OS 3.0. iPhone.ru has some pictures showing the differences between objects photographed in iPhone OS 2.2.1 and OS 3.0. You’ll notice in the particular cat picture above that it is obviously less blurry. On top of better blur control, overexposures and black detail levels are also said to be fine tuned. If Apple doesn’t take the chance to bump up the next gen iPhone’s resolution, it appears that at least the new phone will benefit from some updated brain code. iPhone photographers, do you care?

Sony Ericsson CS8 coming to a T-Mobile store near you

Mobile photographers and T-Mobile customers will now have something to let their inner artist shine forth.  The Sony Ericsson CS8 has just mades its way through the FCC’s oh so secretive halls bringing to T-Mo some pretty serious digital goods underneath the hood.  What kind of goods?

  • 8.1 Megapixel
  • GPS
  • WiFi (No UMA?)???
  • Stereo Bluetooth
  • FM Radio
  • Your typical T-MO USA spectrum coverage plus 1700/2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA

You’ll notice the “No UMA” after WiFi.  For whatever reason, UMA is not supported by this model.  Why, again, I don’t know.  It seems like a pretty solid option and is pretty stupid whatever the reason is to leave out of one of T-Mobile’s higher end cellphones.  Oh well, hopefully the rest of the feature set makes up for it.  Aside from the list above there isn’t anything too earth shattering do get all drooly over.  Disappointed?

T-Mobile dressed Samsung Memoir caught!

The Samsung Memoir is one of the few phones to sport an 8MP shooter!  usually those kinds of Megapixels don’t make it state side.  However, the U.S. is finally starting to get some camera phone love.  If you are a mobile photographer and the idea of toting 8MP on your phone excites you beyond belief, calm down.  You don’t have too much longer to wait as the cited release date is February 25th.  See, not that far off now is it?  With so many megapixels interested persons will obviously have to pay a little extra for the privilege.  Pricing starts at $300 with a two-year contract after a $50 rebate.  A couple goodies besides the MP count is the fact that the Memoir will be carrying a xenon flash and 16x digital zoom!  Granted digital zoom is worthless if quality matters to you, but if you just have to get that split second close up, you should be covered.  Besides these rather exciting features, you can expect 3G, GPS, and a full HTML browser.  Get your wallets ready!

Moto announces Renew, Tundra, and MOTOSURF

Moto sure has fallen from their Razr driven dominance they had just a few short years ago.  Today they hope to move one step closer to dominance again as they announce several new phones.  It really is shocking to look at the Motorola from a few years ago (Razr era) and now, a company that is desperately trying to cling to life.  They are still having some problems breaking away from the Razr’s main design, making their phones appear long in the tooth even on launch day.  Hopefully Motorola can turn this funk around and create the phones that will truly wow us.  Click through for info on Motorola’s 3 new handsets.
