  • Tour with trackpad and WiFi (Essex/9650) seen in Sprint garb
    by Mike
    Posted December 17th, 2009 at 10:02 am
The BlackBerry Tour is by far the best CDMA BlackBerry yet. It has style, power, and sophistication. But one glaring omission -- WiFi -- fails to earn it a "buy" rating in my book. Remember, no matter how good your carrier, there will always be dead spots. The Tour 2/Essex/9650 is no secret. It's been rumored about and talked about for many months. In fact, shortly after (as in days) after the original Tour, talk of an updated model with WiFi and a trackpad were heard. Now that actual p...
  • DTV madness to be trumped by “all-IP phone transition”
    by Mike
    Posted December 3rd, 2009 at 6:11 am
Oh god, I can see it now -- madness in the streets when when the FCC publicly announces a plan to move over the entire countries ancient switch based phone network to an all IP network model. If you thought you had seen confusion and the highest amount of confusion spewed forth, boy are you in for a treat. It will inevitably happen though. In the U.S., telephone providers have been trying in recent years to move people over to VoIP services with AT&T; being amongst the top in this area. Still...
  • BlackBerry 9100 (Stratus) gets highly detailed on video.
    by Mike
    Posted November 30th, 2009 at 10:50 am
If the video that revealed itself a week or two back showcasing the upcoming SureType BlackBerry 9100 wasn't quite the greatest thing you'd ever seen (/sarcasm), this new video may come a tad bit closer. The above motion picture clip features a much more thorough tour around the 9100 (Stratus') hardware and software offerings. Going by what we see in the vid, it looks like a rock solid device to keep the SureType line of devices relevant and alive. Just in case you're short on time, you can...
  • Vodafone and Verizon customers beware. Email virus with your name on it.
    by Mike
    Posted November 18th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Vodafone and Verizon Wireless users have a new threat to watch out for in their inbox. A new virus claiming to be from either Vodafone or Verizon comes with a subject of "Your credit balance is over the limit". The danger comes by way of an attached virus that the email details as an "balance checker". Whatever you do, do not open it or run the attached program. Doing so invites in a nasty little Trojan with name of "Regrun" that hosts a nasty program flagged as "Mal/Zbot-P". It's extr...
  • Email to be extinct in 10 years? Eh, probably not.
    by Mike
    Posted November 18th, 2009 at 5:57 am
While looking forward to the future, it's always fun to think about what is "hot" now and how it will undergo the usual tech transformation into old, outdated, and dead technology. The telephone used to be an amazing wonderment of scientific engineering. Now it's nothing special. Much the same, email was at one point the pinnacle of technological achievement. Today everyone including their grandma and maybe even her dog have at least one email address. So what type of lifespan or useful tim...
  • On device BlackBerry Theme Store launched
    by Mike
    Posted November 4th, 2009 at 7:45 am
Browsing themes downloads on a BlackBerry device isn't exactly fun, intuitive, or fast. Having a "theme browser/store" in a mobilized version is something BlackBerry users have been clamoring for. CrackBerry, in conjunction with MobiHand are finally releasing such a store bringing easy and fast theme browsing to BlackBerry handhelds. Searching through themes via Category, Newness, etc. give you plenty of ways to find what you want. Go ahead and give it a try. Find out more about the Crack...
  • Personal Email accounts w/ Exchange = $30, not $45.
    by Mike
    Posted November 3rd, 2009 at 6:26 pm
Catch that? I've been seeing quite a few articles today concerning Verizon's DROID plans and Exchange email. Many have been decrying the seemingly more expensive $45 data plan "required" to use an exchange email account. This isn't the case. As Gearlog appropriately points out, you can access Exchange email on either the personal $30 data plan or the $45 corporate data plan. The only difference is that the $30 plan is meant for individual users who activate 5 or less lines. The $45 plan is...
  • City of L.A. joins list of largest U.S. companies to embrace Google Apps
    by Mike
    Posted October 27th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
In a move that is sure to spur countless ramblings, clown faces, and repetitive though baseless comments from The Balms himself, the L.A. City Council voted an astonishing 12 - 0 on a $7.25 million contract to move all 30,000 of the cities' employees over to Gmail and other Google related apps. Not a small move by any stretch. In fact, after the move is complete, the city of L.A. will be one of the largest municipal users of Google apps. Pretty cool huh? In an effort to prevent mass chaos, t...
  • Allerta inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry available for pre-order
    by Mike
    Posted October 26th, 2009 at 7:43 am
You may recall a small rant I posted last week about the Allerta inPulse BlackBerry smartwatch. At the time, it was nothing more than a rumor documented by a couple of mock up renderings. It appears that it was in fact real and will soon be available for nerds everywhere. The one nagging question that kept pinging my thought process was the price. Being as that you need a stand alone BlackBerry for this watch to work, any price I assumed would be relatively cheap. Now that the inPulse watch...

  • Verizon Storm2 coming to town October 28th.
    by Mike
    Posted October 22nd, 2009 at 8:10 pm
What's today? For me in (EST) I'm still staring at Thursday on the computer. *sigh*. If you're in the same slump, cheer up! For October 28th is but a mere 6 days away. You know what that means? The BlackBerry Storm 2 which is exponentially leaps and bounds ahead of it's more trouble ridden, 1st gen brother. The image above comes from CrackBerry via some brave Verizon worker who was able to snap a shot of the Verizon intranet page in all it's underground glory. With the Storm2, text input ...
