  • Moto DROID *officially* getting Live Wallpapers with 2.1 update!
    by Mike
    Posted March 6th, 2010 at 11:06 pm
Moto DROID owners who aren't necessarily into the "underground" world of modding, hacking, and custom ROM's were no doubt a bit disgruntled when finding out the 2.1 update would not be as nifty super cool as the Nexus One's special flavor of Flan (2.1). Adding to the anger, Motorola missed the February-ish time frame that 2.1 for the DROID was supposed to drop. On the subject of Live Wallpapers, the general consensus was that the DROID simply lacked the needed muscle to get the job done smooth...
  • Slow and steady 2G updates come to webOS devices via “2G Updater”.
    by Mike
    Posted February 9th, 2010 at 9:38 pm
OTA firmware updates are a modern convenience for smartphone owners in particular. It is this group of users that often take pride in having the highest quality gadgets and electronic toys. Keeping out gadgets running at their best means staying up to date with the the latest in software. While end users will usually receive their updates via 3G or WiFi, there are some areas that just aren't covered by that all knowing, all speedy wave. In that instance, rolling back to the slower 2G network...
  • Official Droid 2.1 update details released. To exclude new homescreen/launcher and live wallpapers.
    by Mike
    Posted February 8th, 2010 at 10:19 am
Droid users: If you were hoping to get a nice replica of the Nexus One's 2.1 flavor of Android, sit down and get ready for some slightly disappointing news. The launcher on the Moto DROID official 2.1 OS uses the same pull-tab launcher, not the new 3D cube style of the Nexus One. Furthermore, the live wallpapers that are gimmicky yet cool are also MIA. It's not all bad however. For instance, multi-touch is now supported in the browser (finally) and the News/Weather Genie widget also come...
  • Nokia N900 finally blessed with Ovi Store access/downloads.
    by Mike
    Posted January 13th, 2010 at 10:37 am
Oh joyous day. The Nokia N900, by far the most exciting and lust worthy Nokia device currently on the market can now finally boast about Ovi Store support. Until now, the Maemo 5 powered device was exempt due to incompatibilities with the Linux based OS. A new firmware update has corrected that problem however. With all the talk around Apple's App Store overshadowing pretty much everything else, news such as this doesn't usually make it's way to the top of the pile. That's where we -- the ...
  • “The other fish in the sea”: Android 2.1 ROM ported to G1
    by Mike
    Posted December 15th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
And naysayers were claiming the G1's days were numbered. Heck, I won't argue it's chin is getting pretty damn old. But that doesn't stop the vivid developer community for making the best of what the G1 has hardware wise. "Teh Dust" from xda-forums has no doubt been spending the last collection of hours locked away in some dark corner with a computer typing out sweet nothings into it's ear and pushing all the right buttons to align Android 2.1 (Flan) in a way that G1 users can surely appreciat...
  • Android 2.1 Hero ROM w/ HTC Sense UI leaked.
    by Mike
    Posted December 1st, 2009 at 12:45 pm
So you've been lusting over Sense UI playing nice with the upcoming Android 2.1 update these last couple of days. Pictures are indeed worth a thousand words yet somehow, we are left wanting more. Understandable. And so you shall receive. HTC Hero owners who are starting to twitch due to the now ancient Android 1.5 build they're currently running can -- if they have the hacking chops -- download a freshly leaked Android 2.1 ROM, complete with Sense UI wrapped all around. I could go on but yo...
  • Sprint HTC Hero leaky battery issue has a temporary work around…
    by Mike
    Posted October 16th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Until the Moto Sholes pops into the world, the Sprint branded HTC Hero is the coolest piece of hardware to be graced by Android. Since the launch of the device roughly one week ago, reviews both professional and amateur have been highly praising of the wonder gadget. The only monkey wrench that seems to be appearing is an apparent bug concerning an "always awake" handset after sending a text with the stock SMS app. If you think you're clean and clear because the backlight goes off you may be ...
  • BlackBerry OS 5.0 update
    by Mike
    Posted September 16th, 2009 at 7:07 am
While I criticized RIM pretty hard, the addict in me still looks favorably on the old friend as I long for something new and exciting. 5.0 was supposed to be launched Aug/Sept according to several pieces of documentation that circulated over the summer. Obviously August is gone and September is quickly heading that way. So what now? We wait longer. According to RIM as they talked tireless at several BlackBerry symposium events, 5.0 for the enterprise and developer networks is already starti...
  • Android Market getting brighter facelift…emerging from the dark underground…
    by Mike
    Posted September 1st, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Personally, I really like Android's darker UI and color scheme throughout. For a tired iPhone owner, it is a welcome change to the grey/silver/blue hues found throughout the iPhone OS. If you happen to feel slightly different and instead prefer a tad bit more european complexion to the Android Market, leaked photos showing upcoming changes to the Market highlight a shift in UI coloring. Before, the background was black and darker greys with orange highlights. In these latest leaked images,...
  • OS 5.0 leaked for Bold, Tour, and 8900
    by Mike
    Posted August 26th, 2009 at 6:41 am
While Bold users may still be recouping from the excitement the latest AT&T; update brought them, the more daredevilish users may be over and done with that already as they've likely had that firmware version for weeks now. While AT&T; is still messing around with oh so old 4.6 Bold firmware, the real action is in the 5.0 scene. Some brave developer or insider with special access to pre-release BlackBerry OS builds was kind enough to open the door and let loose versions of the 5.0 software for...
  • BlackBerry Bold getting firmware update. Visual Voicemail, 2G/3G mode toggle ensue.
    by Mike
    Posted August 25th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
BlackBerry Bold users rejoice, this afternoon will bring good fortune to you and your beloved piece of Canadian born hardware. RIM announced earlier that an update to the BlackBerry Bold firmware will bring two pretty big updates with it along with the usual performance fixes and other general bug fixes. But we don't care about those mundane bug fixes. Nooo sir (or mam). We care about the numero uno updates such as Visual Voicemail and 2G/3G mode selection... (more...)...
  • Clean that dirty SSD with Indilinx - Like giving an old man a double shot of youth
    by Mike
    Posted August 10th, 2009 at 6:47 am
Even though the storage market is quickly shifting to solid state memory and flash devices, the lingering issues persist. As SSD's and flash memory age, they begin to slow and run the risk of blocks of memory failing. Not necessarily a great retirement option to look forward to. While the blocks of memory failing is still something to worry about, slowing down with age will soon no longer be an issue. However, there is hope for the mechanical eschewing foe thanks to Indilinx. The ingeniou...
