  • GTA V gets mentioned!

I don't write about games a whole lot here on Gadgetsteria. The reason being that if I'm not sitting in front of a computer or phone writing an article, the few opportunities I get to play games are just that -- playing games. I don't have nearly enough time to start reviewing games too. Sad I know. We all have our favorite game. One that we could spend hours playing over and over again with no end in sight. My personal favorite is Grand Theft Auto. More specifically, Grand Theft Auto IV....
  • GameStop testing the Digital Download waters come 2010

Being a used game retailer has it's advantages. Gamers love new stuff. Because of that one way to fund their new lusts is by selling off their old. Awesome concept and business model until you consider more and more people are downloading games -- that which you can't return. GameStop, looking to keep from fading out of existence has announced via the BMO Capital Management Digital Entertainment conference that in earl 2010, the company will try it's hand this whole digital marketplace. Thi...
  • Microsoft confirms modded Xbox hardware banned for life! [Update]
    by Mike
    Posted November 12th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
Talk about fast development, just yesterday we got word that Microsoft was banning all modded Xboxes from Live services and were speculating as to how long the ban would be in effect and how accused gamers could go about reinstating their account. Today Microsoft told BBC that banned 'boxes are gone...forever. So much for longevity by modding your system. In order to reinstate your Xbox live account, you'll have to back it up onto a new, un-modified Xbox unit. Banned hardware will still be a...
  • Microsoft throws the ban hammer at over a million Xbox live accounts over modded hardware.
    by Mike

Microsoft giving the 'ol ban hammer to Xbox live users for various reasons is nothing new. Though banning over 1,000,000 users because they're running hacked or modded hardware is certainly a deviation from the norm. The whole problem with modded 360's is it allows end users to circumnavigate the many layers of DRM in use by the Xbox software. Obviously game developers have a problem with this as games are then easily copied and saved to the device sans payment. Apart from legal worries, hav...
  • Commodore 64 returns to the App Store!
    by Mike
    Posted November 11th, 2009 at 6:01 am
Classic gaming fans were no doubt saddened when Apple removed the Commodore 64 app because of some elusive code that allowed end users to enter into BASIC interpreter. Noticing their screw up, the App Store yanked the app. That was a couple months ago when the developers first received word that their app was going to be pulled. They promptly removed the offending code and resubmitted. So why did it take so long? Well, after the last coy little attempt to circumnavigate the App Store polic...
  • Nvidia Fermi GT300 series cards delayed
    by Mike
    Posted November 10th, 2009 at 6:28 am
Those looking to pick up the hottest piece of gaming gear at the end of this year, namely an Nvidia Fermi GT300 series card, are going to have quite the bleak and unhappy Christmas. According to DigiTimes, Nvidia is waiting until fiscal year 2011 (read: late January) to release this new gaming beast of a chip. The delay is disappointing to say the least. "Industry sources" had this to say about the matter: Nvidia will ramp Fermi for three different product lines: GeForce, Quadro and Tesl...
  • Total development costs for Gran Turismo 5 — $60 million
    by Mike
    Posted November 6th, 2009 at 8:50 am
No, I didn't misplace a zero. The simulation racing game that has spanned the ages of video gaming time packs a wallop in the latest installment, Gran Turismo 5. $60 million is a lot of money, especially considering it was spent on a single video game. Now I'm not to deep in development costs for other big gaming titles, but I'm surprised to say the least. I've been playing Gran Turismo since v2 and have loved every minute....and then Forza came along. In order to keep a Forza vs. GT flame ...
  • Radeon HD 5870 X2 is a massive, massive card
    by Mike
    Posted October 31st, 2009 at 9:09 am
As sad as it is, I don't have a pimped out gaming PC. I've lusted for one for years. I don't have a preference as to pre-built or custom though I know custom is the way to go for us picky folks. Still, other things keep getting in the way. In the world of gaming PC's, the gamers #1 concern is a big burly graphics card. One that will move pixel based mountains and pwn Crisis framerates like a champ. Once such card that could be capable of such has so graciously allowed itself to be snapped ...
  • Nvidia Fermi to bring *amazing* graphical power.
    by Mike
    Posted October 30th, 2009 at 10:23 am
**Update: As RedSpectacle pointed out below, they are not renders. I updated my original post as it is/was slightly confusing. Hopefully some real rendered pics surface in the near term. Nvidia's upcoming "Fermi" chipset set to debut on the 300 series desktop graphics will usher in a new era of photo-realistic gaming. I'm not even kidding. Packing the visual punch comes by way of 512 cores which make previous challenges such as facial hair, skin glare, and ray-traced lighting are no match...
  • Early Wii 2 rumors leak. Blu-ray, simultaneous world-wide launch in 2010?

Great jumping Jehoshaphat. HD Wii! Hear that? Oh you missed it? That's because it was the sound of a single, tiny grain of salt hitting the floor. Which signals how you should treat this rumor. According to a "very reliable source" of Logic-Sunrise (Google translated), the 2nd gen Wii, for now cleverly named "Wii 2" will debut in 2010. The main rumored feature that stands out is the Blu-ray support and hardware support for both 720p and 1080p. Sweet. Finally some HD. I know the W...

Ever wonder what Mario would look like naked....and running? Word from Peach is that the great Italian 8-bit man we've all come to love is moving on from his video game life to a more lucrative "side business". From the picture above I'll let you come to your own conclusions. So long innocent childhood memories of Mario. We'll miss you... OhGizmo! > Geekologie > Kotaku ...
  • Shocker: Americans play more games than everyone else.
    by Mike
    Posted October 27th, 2009 at 5:43 am
Do you sit around at night wondering which country has the highest population of gamers? I'm sure you don't. But, just in case you were, the handy graph above shows what many assumed to begin with -- that America is full of gamers. Now, according to a survey conducted by Today Gamers, a whopping 87% of Americans play video games. TThe UK, Germany, and France fall behind with 74%, 67%, and 66% respectively. So I ask: Do the numbers shock you? Or are the results what you were expecting? It'...
