  • N900 + Palm Garnet OS = puke
    by Mike
    Posted December 11th, 2009 at 7:13 am
Once a highly regarded OS and seen as one of the best of it's time, Palm Garnet is now known as nothing more than a long tooth. An OS that stuck like glue to many Palm devices long after the OS had reached it's expiration date. Faith was somewhat restored with Palm's new baby -- webOS. But we're not going to talk about that. Why? Because you can't run webOS on your N900 right now. Palm Garnet OS welcome to the N900. After about 20 seconds the coolness and wow factor of running a Palm Garn...
  • Nokia also closing New York and Chicago stores.

It's might sad to see a once great tech giant falter and begin to fail. As they travel along their downward spiral of a decent, you start remembering all of the fond memories of years past. Such a reminiscing period will soon fall upon New York and Chicago residents who currently flock to Nokia flagship stores on a regular basis. The blood letting (read: extreme profit losses) that is killing Nokia within claimed it's first store a couple of days ago. Tonight we learn of two more stores goin...
  • Nokia N97 price cut in half. 3-year marriage commitment to Bell Canada needed…

For whatever reason, Nokia phones have failed to really catch on here in the states. I know we've all seen those junk freebie Nokia's that just about every carrier has, using them to inflate their bottom line. But the real meat is that of smartphones. Here in the states and even North America as a whole, Nokia smartphones are often left for those with deeper pockets than most thanks to a lack of carrier subsidizing. $5-$600 phones are simply too much for most end users to pay. Even the most...
  • State of Nokia affairs: London flagship store going buy-bye
    by Mike
    Posted December 4th, 2009 at 6:51 am
Londoners who made it a habit to routinely stop by their flagship Nokia store to try and and play with all of the Finish companies latest and greatest will have to find a new playground. Seeing as how Nokia's market share and profits have been tanking in a downward spiral for the last several quarters, it's no surprise retail outlets are getting the ax. All of that concrete and bodies to sustain said concrete cost money -- money that Nokia doesn't have. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of it...
  • Symbians “new” look really that new?
    by Mike
    Posted December 3rd, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Now several hours old, the images of Symbians new, much improved face has made their rounds. I'll say straight up that it looks hot. But look at the battery and signal meters as well as the general look of the icons and menu bar -- they look a lot like the old Symbian. Am I the only one who isn't impressed as much as they hoped to be? Granted, the new widgets and edge-to-edge mystery device it's being showcased on all depict stunning design. Still, the aforementioned UI elements stand out a...
  • Nokia pushing on with Symbian. New face expected in 2010.

When compared to the likes of Android, the iPhone OS, in some instances BlackBerry and yes, even Windows Mobile, Symbian comes off looking pretty dated. Even though I dog it from time to time, it really isn't that bad of an OS. It's just suffering from a sickening lack of innovation and attention that Android, iPhone, and BlackBerry platforms have been thoroughly enjoying as of late. With constant back and forth rumors of the demise of Nokia and Symbians relationship, many were assuming that ...
  • Shocker: Nokia gets turtle shelled for showing off SNES emulator on N900. Bigger Shocker: Why hasn’t Nintendo monetized the ROM business?
    by Mike
    Posted December 1st, 2009 at 10:00 am
Perhaps it was a defiant "FU" to IP law. It could have been a simple mistake. Whatever it was, the showcasing of an SNES emulator and ROM running on the N900 belonging to Urho Konttori, Product Manager of Nokia, was begging for trouble from the start. And like clockwork, Nintendo has sent the legal hounds on Nokia to investigate how and why such thing happened. Nintendo voices the same opinion that many game developers and companies voice: that emulators and ROM's are evil, sinister, things ...
  • Nokia trying to kill themselves. 2010 to bring but a single Maemo device. Stubborn Symbian love fest continues.
    by Mike
    Posted December 1st, 2009 at 7:00 am
Yeah yeah, I know that Nokia claimed all N-Series devices from this point forward would tout the surprisingly intriguing Maemo OS. According to a few Reuters sources however, Nokia appears to be getting a slight case of nostalgia and will in fact only release one, single Maemo device next year. Why?! Symbian was great in the day and still could be if it was totally rebuilt. But that isn't going to happen so it's time to move on. In the current mobile arena, when comparing Android, the iPhon...
  • Samsung dropping Symbian (Android too?) in 2010. In-house “Bada” OS to take over. [Update]
    by Mike
    Posted November 11th, 2009 at 9:45 am
Fresh off yesterdays news regarding Samsung's new, in-house OS called "Bada", Samsung has announced further information regarding mobile OS's. To put it bluntly: Samsung and Symbian are done. Over. Ca put. I'm not surprised really. With Nokia showcasing Maemo which is light years ahead of the rickety ship that is Symbain and no worthwhile evolutionary changes in the pipeline, it only seems natural (and financially smart) to dump Symbian. Samsung isn't going cold turkey however as they pl...
  • Nokia to shock & awe with Snapdragon powered wonder phone?

Nokia. What do you think of when you hear that world? For me, since my time on earth has so far been relatively short, all I think of is those free phones you get from carriers as they practically throw them at people walking by. Sure it creates huge numbers in both market share and profit categories on those little excel spreadsheets company accountants comb through on a daily basis, but it does nothing for that smaller minority of users who actually use and enjoy their phones. To Geeks, ...
  • Nokia N900 get’s scared. Incubating until Thanksgiving

Awesome. Another delay. This time it's the Nokia N900. Sorry for more bad news but I figured you'd want to know, especially considering how pivotal the N900 is for Nokia. It's by far the most impressive gadget coming from the Finish company in quite some time. Any negative news surrounding it will certainly make someone's day a bit less cheerful. The dark tale comes from Nokia's Head of Maemo Marketing, Peter Schneider. He goes on to say that we can expect to see the N900 start shippi...
  • If you can’t beat ‘em…Sue ‘em. Nokia vs. Apple.
    by Mike
    Posted October 22nd, 2009 at 10:31 am
While Nokia would like us to believe they own a plethora of the technologies that make the iPhone what it is, their latest lawsuit against Cupertino instead comes off looking more like a last ditch effort by a company who has failed to make anything exciting (save for the N900) at any point in recent memory. You know the old saying: "If you can't beat 'um...sue 'um". Based on the poorly constructed copyright system we have here in the states, Nokia claims Apple infringes on GSM, UMTS and wire...
