  • Finally, mobile payments to begin testing this fall.
    by Mike

The pain of sitting by your computer and reading of tales depicting the awesomeness that mobile payments bring other countries will soon be pain no more. This fall, September specifically, small scale trials of mobile payment software, hardware, and services will run in NYC. Scheduled to run through the end of the year, the pilot program of sorts will give all the players involved (and believe me, there's a ton) a chance to see how well the technology works out in the real world. Of course, t...
  • Sneak a phone into a UK prison? The dogs will be watching…err..sniffing…

    Posted August 19th, 2010 at 8:01 am
Dogs have long been used by police forces for means of identifying drug paraphernalia. It seems the nose...knows. You can't fool a dogs olfactory senses as they're really, really sensitive. But good 'ol fido will have to put off retirement a bit longer because police forces in the UK, South Wales specifically, have trained one of their 5-year veterans to sniff out not only drugs, but phones too. He goes by the name of "Max". This 5-year member of the South Wales police force recently comp...
  • NFC mobile payments finally gaining traction, support in US.

The fine folks of Japan (among other places) have enjoyed near filed communication-equipped cellphones for many, many years. Mobile users in the US have failed to enjoy such convenience, however, due to the multitude of licensing agreements and revenue sharing deals that are required for all parties to stay happy. Though, things look to be making a change for the better with an announcement that Verizon, AT&T;, and T-Mobile have all come together in the name of consumer happiness to NFC technol...
  • The final curtain nears for the Nexus One
    by Mike
    Posted July 16th, 2010 at 3:28 pm
It seems like just yesterday we were anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Google Nexus One. Google's foray into the world of smartphone hardware as a bold and unprecedented move. Unfortunately, it was a move that last all but four months, killing any hopes of future releases, building on the N1's awesome features. Though we move on to bigger and better things, the N1 is still a force to be reckoned with. And according to Motorola, they'd rather you go spend your money on other, more open de...
  • Nokia unveils the X5-01. Tech world vomits in angst.
    by Mike

Are candybar/slider phones getting a little long in the tooth for you? Over the last year, we've seen several manufacturers show off squarish style phones that as hard as they may try, still come out looking stubby and fat. Nokia thought they could change that negative image with the X5-01. Though after looking at the picture above for roughly 2.1 seconds, it looks like they failed -- miserably. I could be a little biased about this whole fat-bottomed, square design. Though from talking t...
  • [Update 2] Woah: T-Mo set to blow out Fathers Day with free phones all around?
    by Mike
    Posted June 9th, 2010 at 5:20 pm
If these leaked commercial scripts from T-Mo are any indication of what we can expect come Father's Day, I can honestly say T-Mo will have an old customer back. (Read: Me!) According to the not so subtle message by the script, it looks like any and all T-Mo phones are going to be free on June 19th. Though any catches such as what type of plans are eligible and if "all" phones really are "free" is still up in the air. But I'm one to wait for a deal, so we'll see. If anything, June 19th would...
  • Orange’s latest eco-friendly phone charger comes in a boot.

Have you hugged a tree today? If not, don't fret. Simply pick up a pair of the Orange Power Wellies boots -- a pair of boots that uses heat from every foot step to recharge your phone. I often forget to bring my charging cable with me, resulting in a power depleted phone by midday. Though I doubt I'd ever forget my feet (unless someone else was using them of course). Precisely the phone accessory I could use. However, the reported 12-hour stomp session that only nets you an hour of charg...
  • AT&T releasing iPhone protection plan. Spoiler: It’s not that good…
    by Mike
    Posted May 28th, 2010 at 4:32 pm
Until now, iPhone users wanting some piece of mind were forced to pick up Apple's Apple Care Plan. It's not cheap itself, costing $69. So news of AT&T; releasing their own iPhone protection plan costing $13.99/month sounds like a steal -- keyword, almost. If you do the basic math, you'll quickly find that it ends up being more than Apple's own offering. And then it goes downhill from there... (more...)...
  • HTC HD2 Back Cover Mod
    by Mike
    Posted May 27th, 2010 at 7:26 am
The HTC HD2 is by no means an ugly phone. But being the geeks that we are, there's always something that can be done to spritz up an aging beauty. In the case of the HTC HD2 you see above, it was a simple case of taking the dark mat back cover and sanding/polishing it down to a nice gleaming mirror finish. It's not rocket science by any means, but if you need a helping hand, stop on by WhiteSites for the tutorial... (more...)...
  • The “iPhone killer” that almost was: Helio Ocean 3
    by Mike
    Posted May 27th, 2010 at 6:52 am
Back in the days before the iPhone, it seemed like the smartphone sphere was a lot less cramped. You had a few decent offerings here or there, but certainly nothing like 2010 were literally every other handset that comes out at least grabs my attention for a few minutes. Yes, before the iPhone there was Helio. The first Helio device was a game changer with it's cheap plans and smartphone-like features transformed for consumer oriented ventures. And then the iPhone happened, literally killi...
