**Update: Personal account of the drama here. Frequent the custom DROID ROM scene? If so, there's a high probability you've heard of the Sholes team and at least once. First, a quick back story... They are an awesome custom ROM droid development team that develops one of the best custom DROID ROMs. A few weeks back, the Sholes team, together with developer Scott Anderson released SMUpdater, an awesome auto-download/install app for ROM users. Long...
  • Porting Android 2.x to Sony Xperia — Psh. Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 — Now we’re talkin’

One of the greatest things about a more open platform for smartphones I believe, is the ability to (if you choose) customize it until you're hearts content. From personal experience, I swap ROM's every couple of days on my DROID trying out the updates and newcomers to the custom DROID ROM scene alike. But porting various ROM's developed for your phone, or at the very least, the phone's operating system, are rather easy all things considered. Especially so when comparing a simple ROM port from...
  • Pre-2.1 Android users to get Flash afterall?
    by Mike
    Posted February 9th, 2010 at 10:24 pm
The whole fiasco with the Andriod 2.1 update and Flash won't likely disappear anytime soon. It looks as if for now, however, we're all going to have to suck it up and deal with it. Similar to many others, when I saw there was a very strong possibility that 2.1+ devices were the only ones to receive the Android update, I voiced my displeasure. There's isn't much I can do since I'm not very into coding/programming though. Why would Google usher such updates to the Android platform if a fai...
  • Sit down iPhone. The best portable gaming platform ever: Nokia N900 + SNES Emulator + PS3 controller.
    by Mike
    Posted February 5th, 2010 at 2:06 pm
Oh sweet mother of everything holy. If you thought the iPhone was where it's at in regards to mobile gaming, you've got it all wrong. Take a look at the very standard N900 above with someone casually holding a PS3 controller above it. The pose isn't coincidence. That controller is actually best friends with that little slab of plastic and glass below. Some super genius geeks with more time and know-how than myself managed to take the N900/SNES Emulator trinket we saw a few weeks back and ...
  • *The* custom Motorola DROID ROM to get: 2.0.1, ‘Nuff said!

If you've spent any amount of time here, you probably already know that I'm an Android junkie. In fact, I'd even say that I love the Android platform. I'm a huge tinkerer and tweaker. The beauty of Android is it is a modern tweakers dream -- the customization features of Windows Mobile with added style and features that are a mash up of BlackBerry, webOS, and even the iPhone. Being such a geek at heart means I'm always checking DROID forums looking for new apps, services, ROM's, themes, etc....

Fancy the sleek and dark lines of the much loved and often talked about HTC Sense UI on Android? For HTC Magic fans anyway, today is your lucky day. HTC has let the ropes off of a Sense UI equipped ROM that is prepped, primed, and ready to go for all HTC Magic users. In case you were wondering, the accompanying numbers are ROM 3.05.401.3. For users here in the states: Any T-Mo fans completely stoked on this new found facelift or is Sense UI not quite your forte? Download the HTC Magic S...
  • DROID finally gets visually stimulating ROM: “Smoked Glass”
    by Mike
    Posted January 23rd, 2010 at 3:11 am
I can't tell you how much time I've spent the last month or so literally crawling through every nook and cranny of the internet looking for a truly themed ROM for my DROID. Now don't get me wrong, the collection of ROM's on Alldroid, specifically the and bugless beauty ROMs are awesome. But they lack that visual punch I so desperately yearn for. And let's face it, Android 2.1 is cool, but it isn't "wow, that's sexy cool. Know what I mean? Furthermore, getting HTC's Sense (a ...
  • Official, legal emulator heading to iPhone. Tip your hats to SEGA.
    by Mike
    Posted January 22nd, 2010 at 4:09 pm
SEGA! That iconic SEGA voice of the early 90's still rings lound and clear in my head. It seems as if just yesterday I was crowded in a corner of my room on the floor playing Sonic on my SEGA Genesis. *dreaming* Oh those were the days. I've come a long way in only a decade as has the consumer electronics/gaming industry. It's funny to think back to when I was awestruck by a black box playing games on a big tube TV with graphics power measured by "bits" and animals/humans being represe...
  • Let out a sigh of relief: Android 2.1 appears on T-Mobile G1
    by Mike
    Posted January 15th, 2010 at 12:55 pm
Chief complaints nowadays regarding the G1 include slow and sluggish performance when compared to some of the other Android devices on the market, poor battery life, and of course, worries of a dead end nearing the upgrade path. The last scare does have some merit. The OS partition on the G1's built in memory is pretty much maxed out. How developers manage to cram more of those tiny bits inside the case is at times mind boggling, but that's what they do. If you're still wielding a G1...
  • Droid and Sense UI starting to play somewhat nice. Rosie reported to be coming over for dinner too?

    Posted December 30th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Android is all about customization and tweaking the hell out of it. While a large majority of those jumping on the Android bandwagon aren't exactly the largest book of technical knowledge, it's good to know that it's not stopping development of custom ROM's and all the enjoyable bits and pieces that make Android the highly customizable. The last week has seen Android 2.1 (Flan) as the current "must have" for Droid users. I myself flashed the latest 2.1 ROM available and was thoroughly imp...
  • SNES Controller becomes self sufficient gaming platform…
    by Mike
    Posted December 22nd, 2009 at 10:25 am
ROM's are a geeks best friend. Today apparently they seem to be a hot topic... Ever want to carry a library of ROM's in a convenient, stylish, and portable form factor that you can take with you from computer-to-computer? The SNES controller above had the guts removed and replaced with the contents of a flash drive as well as a USB hub. The results is a controller that houses all the ROM's you could ever want combined with a single cable allowing you to hook up and play said ROM's on any c...
  • “The other fish in the sea”: Android 2.1 ROM ported to G1
    by Mike
    Posted December 15th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
And naysayers were claiming the G1's days were numbered. Heck, I won't argue it's chin is getting pretty damn old. But that doesn't stop the vivid developer community for making the best of what the G1 has hardware wise. "Teh Dust" from xda-forums has no doubt been spending the last collection of hours locked away in some dark corner with a computer typing out sweet nothings into it's ear and pushing all the right buttons to align Android 2.1 (Flan) in a way that G1 users can surely appreciat...
  • Android 2.1 (Flan) cracked wide open. Ringtones, wallpapers, boot up animation now available for all! [Update 2]
    by Mike
    Posted December 14th, 2009 at 11:44 pm
Well that was fast. (Where have I heard that before...?) If you've been taking in all of the non-stop Nexus One info, text, images, and video the last day or so and feeling pretty bummed even with your current Android companion, I've got something that should breathe a tad bit of fresh air into your aging friend. The Android 2.1 ROM that comes stock on the Nexus One has been cracked wide open tonight. While not exactly in the proper form to actually port to any other devices quite yet, a...
  • Droid gets the root treatment!
    by Mike
    Posted December 8th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
It's been a busy two days with the site and all. So much to my surprise when I was taking a relaxing stroll through a couple Droid forums did I find the answer to my dreams (as of November 6th) -- the Droid has finally been rooted. You know what this means folks: multi-touch is this close. No to mention, plenty of tweaking, endless hours exploring new ROM's (when they become available) and overall getting a sense of newness will be returning to your device. Who doesn't love a gadget reborn? ...
  • Shocker: Nokia gets turtle shelled for showing off SNES emulator on N900. Bigger Shocker: Why hasn’t Nintendo monetized the ROM business?
    by Mike
    Posted December 1st, 2009 at 10:00 am
Perhaps it was a defiant "FU" to IP law. It could have been a simple mistake. Whatever it was, the showcasing of an SNES emulator and ROM running on the N900 belonging to Urho Konttori, Product Manager of Nokia, was begging for trouble from the start. And like clockwork, Nintendo has sent the legal hounds on Nokia to investigate how and why such thing happened. Nintendo voices the same opinion that many game developers and companies voice: that emulators and ROM's are evil, sinister, things ...
  • Leaked HTC-ified Android skin looks good…makes your wife jealous
    by Mike
    Posted May 29th, 2009 at 7:25 am
Tinkers, dabblers, and those of you who take life by the horns and make it your own, the leaked modified ROM made by Haykuro over at XDA-developers forum of an up and coming HTC modified skin running on top of Android looks might nice. So nice in fact, it would lead one to extreme measures to acquire it...right? Now I'm not talking illegal, I'm merely suggesting living on the edge, no holds barred living. If so, good can get this custom HTC ROM custom goodness yourself. What all...

    Posted January 16th, 2009 at 10:00 am
While Windows Mobile isn't my forte, I can always appreciate a good leak of a new product/firmware.  Today's leak of the day goes to Sprint and HTC.  Some kind soul has released a ROM update to Sprint's HTC Diamond that brings with it a host of new updates.  Those updates include: Mobile Internet Explorer 6 (WITH FULL FLASH SUPPORT!)
