Blu-ray slowly but surely gaining market share. Digital downloads coming on fast!

  • January 26, 2009 8:59 pm

The road to HD discs hasn’t exactly been smooth.  The whole dual between HD-DVD and Blu-ray left one camp sent home with their tail between their legs and the other with a tail in a much better upright position.  However, it hasn’t been smooth sailing for Sony since winning the HD format war.  Uptake of HD media hasn’t exactly been quick.  According to Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings, “Blu-ray adoption is starting to pick up nicely”.  How nicely?  Try 700,000 Netflix subscribers, or 30% a growth!  Not bad at all.  I personally don’t think Blu-ray will be like DVD was in its early years.  HD downloads will soon take over and surpass physical media as the need to carry around physical media is being lessened with every passing day as the internet creeps into every device we touch.  For example, Netflix’s digital delivery service is passing up Blu-ray like it’s standing still.  Netflix users numbering in the “millions” used the digital method last month proving that digital, physical media free is the way of the future.  In reality, Blu-ray and digital downloads are fighting for the same market more or less.  Sure, not everyone has internet access and therefore Blu-ray will attract those users more, however, the bigger picture is moving digital.

Get your sweety some pink tech this Valentines Day.

  • January 26, 2009 1:39 pm

If your significant other is of the tech loving group, or, if they just like all things pink, Sony and Samsung have you covered. The previously released Sony Ericsson W350 is now available in a light pink tone that is sure to appeal to the ladies. It is a lower end handset so as not to confuse or overburden non-smartphone users. If you want to give something a little more sophisticated/feature packed, Sprint has a pink version of the Instinct now floating around as well. So which phone are you. The music centric low techie, or the high tech “gotta have it now” crowd?

Sony laying off up to 16,000 by March of 2010!

  • January 22, 2009 2:17 pm

And you though Microsoft was having a bad year.  Sony, who will post a massive net loss of $2.9 billion will be letting 16,000 employees go between now March of 2010.  Interesting side note: Sony hasn’t had an operating loss in 14 years.  The change that is coming to Sony won’t be the most fun, or fair.  The changes include everything from the bleeding of employees, to shutting several plants, cutting back at others, paycuts, early retirement options, as well as restructured management.  Hopefully the economy starts going uphill and soon.

Live replay’s coming to Sony’s PSP

  • January 21, 2009 4:33 pm

There is nothing like being at a live sporting event.  The sights, sounds, and smells (good and bad) completely envelope you and suck you into your surroundings making whatever even your at much more real.  There is one drawback to live events.  The lack of instant replays is always a pain.  You paid x amount of dollars to be there in person and yet the guy sitting on the couch 500 miles away gets to see the latest play in slow mo from 20 different angles while your stuck wondering why the players are just standing around, (that is if you’re sitting way up in the nosebleed section).  Technology is finally breaking though though as Arsenal, an English soccer club is experimenting with an instant replay system based around Sony’s PSP giving live users the best of both worlds.  The service is scheduled to start rolling out in the next 18 months.  Start counting the days down…now.

Sibling Rivalry: Sony hates Sony Ericsson

  • January 16, 2009 2:45 pm

Gaming is one of the only sectors in the market that seems to be weathering the financial storm.  After all, a good game can ease your tensions, make you laugh, and overall forget about how much your 401K has shrunk in the past couple months.  Apple is now marketing the iPhone and iPod touch as a gaming platform, that isn’t news to anyone.  However what is news is Sony not chasing after.  Nintendo is a mobile gaming platform that has been dominating with their Nintendo DS.  Sony has the PSP.  And Apple the iPhone/iPod Touch.  For graphics lovers, PSP hands down, more “old school” and “party” games, DS.  Overall ease of use and convienence, Apple.  Sony and Sony Ericsson have a chance to pull back a share of the market as the PSP is a really great device as well as the Sony Ericsson line of phones.  So, wheres the reunion and the “PSP Phone”.

Sony unveils pretty slick looking NWZ-X1000 mp3 player

  • January 7, 2009 12:19 pm

Touchscreens are the feature of 2009 with manufacturer after manufacturer jumping on board and releasing their own.  Sony is letting loose a very slick looking mp3 player with an alphabet soup name dubbed the NWZ-X1000.  The player features a 3″ OLED display meaning everything displayed will be very bright and crisp while being more energy efficient than backlit LCD displays.  Besides a great screen the player also has Wi-Fi and headphone independent noise cancellation.  Interested parties take note that the player will come in 16GB and 32GB capacities.  And of course being Sony, you know this player will have impeccable sound quality with a handful of sound enhancement options.   No prices or release dates are available yet, but it shouldn’t be too much longer until Sony lets us know.

Sony Xperia X1 available now in *some* Sony Style stores

  • January 5, 2009 9:10 pm

Are you feeling lucky, did you check your horoscope, pray to whoever it is you pray to (or don’t), and count your lucky stars?  That is just about what it will take to get a Sony Xperia X1 right now in the states.  WM experts happened to follow the above advice and got lucky at the Sony Style store in California where they are covering Macworld tomorrow.  They decided to stop inside and inquire on if they had an X1′s for sale.  The salesman replied:

“We had them before but they took them away for some reason.  But we just got two in on Saturday.  Let me ask if we’re allowed to sell them, they said we could start on Monday but let me confirm.”

You know WM Experts couldn’t resist and after dropping a few pennies collected from the couch, make that 86,700 pennies to be exact, they were proud owners of a new Sony Xperia X1!  They are going to carry it along to CES and really put it through its paces this coming week before they make their final judgment.  I sure wish I had 86,700 pennies to dump on my latest gadget!

Sony getting ready for major cuts?

  • January 5, 2009 10:34 am

It’s no secret in the current economy that all sectors of the market are hurting.  Everything from the construction to consumer electronics industry are feeling the pain.  It comes as no surprise that a company as large as Sony is having trouble dealing with the tough times.  According to an article on the UK Times, Sony could be letting as many as 16,000 permanent and temporary staff go as well as cutting several major divisions!  Which divisions would be on the chopping block?  It’s too hard to say now but if the economy doesn’t pick up soon we all will soon find out.  Sony, cherishing it’s bonds with the general public, vehemently denies all of the size reductions as false (as they always do with rumors concerning the company).  They say all is well, the company is just rosy, and hippos could possibly fly.
