  • Microsoft finally jumping head first into smartphone market with phone of their own?
    by Mike
    Posted April 28th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
The iPhone has enjoyed complete dominance in the younger crowd because of its tight integration with a music download service (iTunes), a very successful App Store, and a UI and device functionality that many manufacturers still have some time before they catch up on. Since the dawn of the iPhone, Microsoft has been included in many rumors telling of an impending Microsoft/Zune phone. Time and time again, Microsoft has countered that they are a software business and leave the hardware desgin...
  • The sum of Windows Mobile 6.5 and May 11th = False
    by Mike
    Posted April 21st, 2009 at 11:10 am
WinMo users who were preparing for May 11th by stocking up on certain party supplies in anticipation for a WinMo 6.5 launch will sadly have to keep their goods in the cellar a bit longer as Microsoft has annouced that some information from a recent blog posting (below) was misinterpruted (and has now since been corrected) and WinMo 6.5 will not be launching on May 11th.  Sorry WinMo users, looks as if May 11th is not your day to shine after all.  Oh well, look on the bright side - by the t...
  • Windows Mobile 6.5 *Not* officially launching May 11th
    by Mike
    Posted April 17th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
While I myself am far from a Windows Mobile fan, I can appreciate the enthusiasm and devotion the WinMo crowd have for their workhorse OS.  Even though many if not most of the mobile world has already moved on from 6.5 and is now focused on Windows Mobile 7, we'll take what we can get as WinMo isn't a platform known for speedy or frequent updates.  If you are a WinMo follower and devoted fan for life, May 11th is your day to shine...kind of.  After Microsoft releases it on the 11th of May...
  • Theme support coming to WinMo 6.5
    by Mike
    Posted March 31st, 2009 at 1:06 pm
WinMo users...this announcement is just for you.  If you are a themer and customizer and like to mix things up from time to time, gone are the old days of having to jump through fifty different hoops just to change your stupid wallpaper and a few icons in Windows Mobile OS's of yore as Microsoft has announced that it is commited to making Windows Mobile more personal.  Helping with that quest will be several prominent designers and design houses including the Design Museum London and the C...
  • Microsoft recants $99 for app updates
    by Mike
    Posted March 30th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
In what was most certainly a ridiculous and blatant move centered around greed, Microsoft was imposing a $99 fee for app submissions over 5 submission in a year. Ok so that wasn't that bad. The real kicker was that app updates were included. A developer can easily go through 5 updates in a year for a single app let alone a library of apps. Under the old rules, if a developer released an update as simple as a bug patch longer than a week after the original apps release, that update was coun...
  • Zune functions coming to Windows Mobile 7?
    by Mike
    Posted March 26th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Microsoft's "not full steam ahead" project called the Zune will soon have many homes on multiple devices.  WM Power Userhas been tipped off regarding the next rendition of WinMo and the Zune.  Apparently some of the Zune's musical features are going to make their way into Windows Mobile 7.  How exciting.  Hey I can't knock it that bad since I had a first gen Zune.  The device itself was ugly as sin but it played music and had a decent enough interface.  Certainly with some "steam" and ...
  • Windows Mobile 7 in the flesh?
    by Mike
    Posted March 24th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
Windows Mobile 6.5 not coming until this summer and the design still up in the air, many have kind of almost forgotten about Windows Mobile 7.  Ok, maybe not forgotten, but it has been shoved from the forefront of their minds.  Above is an awesome screenshot of a "claimed" Windows Mobile 7 in action captured by "a kind tipster" who sent the image above to WM Power User.  Is it real?  For all we know it could be a really nice theme or shell on top of WinMo.  If it does in fact turn out t...
  • Pwn2Own can’t quite claim the mobile market…yet.
    by Mike
    Posted March 22nd, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Mobile users can breathe a heavy sigh of relief as their beloved mobile devices are safe for another year.  The Pwn2Own competition put on by CanSecWest in Vancouver, British Columbia, draws hackers from far and wide that come together to find, exploit, and aid developers and manufacturers in patching security holes, were unable to break into any of the mobile devices entered (according to Tipping Point) even though they had a field day with browsers just a few short days ago.  The mobile...
  • Silverlight Mobile coming to WinMo 7!
    by Mike
    Posted March 20th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Flash has long been the holy grail if you will of the mobile internet world.  If a handset manufacturer and mobile OS developer can get flash, they've got an instant hit...more or less.  Even the almighty iPhone lacks flash.  Though, Jobs claimed it was of poor performance that didn't meet their stict requirements for a desierable user experience.  Microsoft has long been in development of a flash fighter dubbed "Silverlight".  This inhouse "flash-type" software allows rich video/audio/...
  • IE Mobile 6 only available for NEW WinMo 6.1 phones.
    by Mike
    Posted March 5th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Originally it was reported just that 6.1 would be getting IEM 6 goodness.  However, according to MS Mobiles and Into Mobile only new WinMo 6.1 devices will be come with IE Mobile 6.  For all of you old folk out there you will have to resort to unofficial ROM's and some behind the scenes work.  Granted you won't get any support if you screw your device up.  But then again, I'd gladly take the risk if it meant never having to look at or use IE Mobile 5 again.  To each his own.  'Tis a...
  • Install WinMo 6.5 Facebook App on your *Not* WinMo 6.5 device
    by Mike
    Posted March 5th, 2009 at 8:59 am
With all the excitement surrounding Windows Mobile 6.5, many developers will move onward leaving pre WinMo6.5 builds in the dust as they try to embrace the future.  Unfortunately, becoming outdate in the gadget world is something that can happen literally overnight.  However, thanks to "Da_G" from raphael forms and "dsi76", pre WinMo 6.5 users can now reap one of the small benefits of 6.5 all while staying within the cozy if not grossly outdated pre 6.5 enviorments.  Interested parties ca...
