How To Enable Push Notifications For Sparrow For iPhone (Jailbreak Tweak)

We showed you Sparrow for iPhone a few days ago, ultimately coming to the conclusion that while it is far and away nicer and more useful than the stock Mail.app, the lack of Push Notification is a serious sticking point. Sadly, the method in which the Sparrow team was using to enable Push Notifications for Sparrow for iPhone wasn’t approved by Apple. Nonetheless, when there’s a will there’s a way.

Jailbroken iPhone users can once again re-enable Push Notifications for Sparrow on their iPhones with a simple Cydia tweak by IpuIpu called “Sparrow Push”. Sparrow Push appears to use the same VoIP APIs that the Sparrow team was initially using and smacked down for doing, so it’s uncertain how long this workaround will work. In terms of battery life, IpuIpu says the added drain is no different (in theory) than that of stock Exchange accounts set up to push email within iOS (read: negligible).

Apple could very well alter the API to block Sparrow Push. That said, it does work at this moment and is only $3.99. Considering how loyal some people (like us) are to Sparrow, it’s $3.99 well spent to make that pretty, (now dormant) email app alive and useful once again. If you give it a shot, let us know how it goes for you.
