Missing: Apple TV

First off, allow me to clear my throat *ahem* and say: Hello world!

Today is one of those important days in the eyes of Apple fans: release day for a new product! Apple, today, released the new iteration of the iPad along with a newer, 1080p-supporting version, Apple TV. For me, in this release, the Apple TV > the new iPad.

Unlike many people, I can tend to hem and haw on a new product. “Do I really need it?” “How much will I use it?” “What does it (Apple TV in this case) do that my BluRay player can’t?”

These are some of the questions I fought with over the last week – well, today, I opted to take the plunge (I mean c’mon, $99 isn’t a lot of money for a new addition to my gadget family!) and buy the most recent version of the Apple TV.

“Do I really need it?” Probably not. But I want it. And so do many of the people I talked to, follow (on Twitter) and those who follow me on Twitter. It’s cool – let’s face it. How else would I be able to stream 1080p movies & video from my laptop? What easier way is there to share pictures with family & friends who visit? And, from what I can tell, it’ll be easier to use & navigate for online streaming than my aforementioned BluRay player.

“How much will I use it?” Who knows. A lot? Never? We’ll see. Sometimes, you’ve got to bite the bullet and get something in order to see how much it gets used. Further, you don’t realize, on some things, how much you’ll use it *until* you have it!

“What does it do that my BluRay player can’t?” See question # 1. It streams from my MacBook Pro, it brings, in my estimation, an easier-to-navigate UI and, perhaps most impressive, it brings another Apple logo to my living room. Nuff said.

In writing this, I’ve had the opportunity to review my own answers to these questions – this has helped support my assertion that I want this device. Nay, I *need* this device. (Read, I’m going to try awfully hard to convince wifey!)

This is where my roller coaster stops – because, much to my chagrin, none of the three stores had any in stock when I had finally reached my decision. While I pondered what to do while stuck in traffic, I added an Apple TV into my cart via the Apple Store app on my phone…then proceeded to hover my thumb over the checkout button, only to avoid tapping it multiple times.

I want the Apple TV. I’ll probably use it a lot. It brings some cool features that I don’t currently enjoy. I just feel gunshy. Yeah, all this, only to find myself back at square one. Leave me a comment below with your thoughts.

Chances are, I’ll buy it before too long…or at least hover over the checkout button again!

I’d rather buy a Roku 2 than an Apple TV.
